"The Night My Mother Burned My Restaurant" Chapter 10 — Nothing Left to Hide
Chapter 10 — Nothing Left to Hide
Ortiz called me back within ten minutes.
“Don’t respond to the post,” she said. “Send us the original message from your mother and keep any replies you receive.”
“Evan tagged the restaurant. My staff can see it.”
“I understand. Let us speak to the people involved.”
I opened the post again. Evan had written that he was praying for Marianne and for me. Beneath it, strangers were already arguing about whether a mother could be prosecuted for damaging her son’s business.
Luis had commented only once.
I was working that night.
I called Rosa and asked her to tell the staff not to engage. Then I sent Ortiz a screenshot, the link, and Marianne’s message.
Priya called next. Danner’s attorney had obtained additional bank records. A transfer from Cross Street Coffee had gone to an account Marianne controlled. The amount was smaller than Danner’s original deposit, but large enough to matter.
“Evan says his mother handled everything,” Priya said. “The records show they both benefited. We’re giving them to Danner’s attorney.”
“Can we get the house clear of this?”
“We’ve prevented the transfer. I’m working through the disputed agreement and the claim tied to his deposit. It won’t be finished today.”
I looked at my father’s photograph on the table.
“Will Danner lose his money?”
“That depends on what can be recovered from the people who received it. I won’t promise him an outcome yet.”
After we hung up, I drafted a statement for the restaurant page. I wrote that the fire was under investigation, that every employee had been paid, and that I would share reopening plans when I had them. I showed it to Priya before posting.
I didn’t mention my mother or Evan.
The post filled with messages from regular customers. Some asked how to support the staff. Others offered temporary work. A few demanded details I couldn’t give. Rosa gathered the offers into a list and began calling employees.
By evening, Natalie was at my door.
“I saw Evan’s post,” she said.
“I assumed you would.”
“He called me before he published it. He wanted me to say your mother acted alone.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That I’d already spoken to Ortiz.”
She held up her phone. “I found the message he sent after the fire.”
Ortiz had asked her to preserve the phone. A technician had helped recover a copy from an old backup. Natalie showed me the screen but didn’t hand it over.
Evan’s message had been sent shortly after one in the morning.
She lost her nerve. I handled the back. Don’t call Daniel until I know what they found.
I read it twice.
“What does ‘handled the back’ mean?” Natalie asked.
“I don’t know.”
“I sent it to Ortiz.”
“Good.”
She lowered the phone. “I could have shown it to you days ago if I hadn’t deleted it.”

“Yes.”
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
We stood in the doorway while somebody upstairs dragged a chair across the floor.
“Are you going to be okay?” she asked.
“I don’t know yet.”
She nodded and left.
The next morning, Ortiz asked me to come to the investigation office. She had reviewed the recovered message and the restaurant’s alarm records. At 12:46 a.m., the rear door had been opened with the physical key. At 12:54, the alarm registered an interior motion event near the kitchen. The camera showed Evan entering between those two events.
“There may be more evidence from the fire scene,” she said. “I’m telling you what we have established so far. Your mother entered first. Evan entered later. We’re still working to determine what each of them did inside.”
“Marianne said she started it.”
“She has.”
“And he says he stopped her.”
“That’s his account.”
I heard how carefully she kept the two statements separate.
Ortiz slid a photograph across the desk. It showed the office safe, its door open after the fire. A small metal tray lay on the floor beneath it.
“We found traces of damage around the safe,” she said. “Do you know whether it had been forced before the fire?”
“No. I used it Friday evening.”
“Did you tell anyone the combination had changed?”
“It hadn’t changed in months.”
I thought of Natalie watching me open it. Marianne knowing the numbers. Evan asking where the spare key was.
“What else do you need from me?”
“Your complete list of people who knew the combination. And if you have a copy of any message where your mother discussed the key, send it.”
I had no such message. What I had was Marianne’s admission at Alder Street, with Priya present. I gave Ortiz Priya’s name and described exactly what Marianne had said.
Outside the office, I sat on a bench and called my mother.
She answered at once.
“Did Evan take the key from my safe?” I asked.
“He said you told Natalie she could use it.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
“I opened the safe,” Marianne said.
“When?”
“Friday afternoon. Evan was with me.”
The day before the fire.
“He told me he wanted to leave you a note,” she said. “He said you wouldn’t listen to him if he called.”
“What note?”
“I didn’t see one.”
I closed my eyes. She had let him take a key to my restaurant, then gone there herself the following night.
“Tell Ortiz,” I said.
“If I do, Evan will say I gave it to him because I planned everything.”
“Did you?”
“I planned to damage the kitchen. Evan told me what supplies were there, but I was the one who went in first.”
“Then tell her that too.”
She began crying. “You don’t understand what he’s been through.”
“I’ve spent thirty-two years being told that.”
I ended the call and wrote down her words before I drove away.
That afternoon, Priya invited me to review the last item she had requested from my father’s files: a folder of correspondence between him and Helen Ward. Most of it concerned the old shipping business. One letter, written after Evan moved in, held me in my chair.
My father had asked Helen to keep copies of her records because Marianne still believed Thomas Cross had saved her family. He had written that he would show Marianne again when she was ready, but he would not make Evan pay for his father’s conduct.
I folded the letter carefully.
My father had made room for Evan in our house. Marianne had treated that kindness as permission to take more from me.
Ortiz called near sunset. Marianne had come in and given a new statement about the key. Investigators were comparing it with Evan’s account and the physical evidence. Ortiz couldn’t tell me what would happen next.
I thanked her.
Then I went to see Rosa. She was meeting two of our former cooks in a borrowed commercial kitchen, testing a small catering order from a longtime customer. The room smelled of garlic and lemon. Luis handed me an apron.
“We can say no if it’s too soon,” Rosa said.
I tied the apron behind my back. “How many plates?”
“Forty.”
“Then we’d better start.”
For three hours, I chopped, tasted, washed pans, and answered questions that had nothing to do with my family. When the last tray went into the refrigerator, I looked down at the flour and oil on my sleeves.
My mother had burned the place where I cooked. She had not taken the work from my hands.
