"The Morning She Took Them Away" Chapter 9: What It Cost to Tell the Truth
Chapter 9: What It Cost to Tell the Truth
The board met on Friday without Nathan.
Adrian stood at the end of the conference table while Owen summarized the company review. The altered family arrangement had been assembled through Nathan’s office. Claire’s signature image came from a museum form stored in a company event file. The medical-information form had been submitted using Nathan’s approval credentials.
The hospital’s review had identified a staff error in accepting the form. It had disclosed the limited information Nathan later repeated to Sloane. Its administrators had contacted Claire through Tessa and begun their own corrective process.
Owen stopped short of claiming Nathan had personally performed every action. The records showed what had passed through his office and what he had approved. They did not yet identify every person who had handled the files.
Nathan, speaking through his attorney, denied ordering anyone to forge a signature.
Adrian had expected that.
The board chair asked him, “What did you sign?”
Adrian passed around the genuine September authorization.
“I signed these three pages. I accepted a procedure that gave Nathan too much discretion. I didn’t read it carefully enough, and I didn’t tell Claire how it might affect her.”
Nathan’s absence made the room quieter. No one was there to redirect the question.
“What are you proposing?” the chair asked.
“An outside review of the company’s security and record practices. Nathan remains without access while it proceeds. Claire’s personal files are removed from our systems and preserved for the investigation through counsel.”
“And your role?”
“I’ll step away from decisions concerning the review. You can appoint another executive to supervise the daily work.”
“You’re volunteering to lose control of your own company,” one director said.
“I’m acknowledging that I failed to supervise part of it.”
The board voted to accept the review and the temporary change in duties. Adrian kept his ownership interest. He lost the authority to direct the investigation or return Nathan to work.
When the meeting ended, he remained alone in the conference room, looking at the empty chair beside his. Nathan had sat there for fifteen years. Adrian could not yet tell which memories of their friendship would survive what he was learning.
At June’s house, Claire received the decision from Tessa. It did not make her feel triumphant. Nathan was still denying responsibility, and the company review would take time.
But his accounts were closed. No driver would come to the gate on his instruction that afternoon.
Claire carried the twins into June’s small garden. The air was cold, so she stayed only a few minutes. She wanted to stand outside without checking the street first.
Inside, June had laid out her father’s clippings again.
“You don’t have to look at those today,” June said.
“I know.”
Claire picked up the last article. Samuel had given evidence despite warnings that his business might fail. As a child, she had wished he had found a way to tell the truth without taking the rest of the family into danger.

Now she understood something she had not understood then: being right did not release a person from caring for those who would pay the price.
She called Tessa.
“I want to make a statement about my signature and the hospital form,” Claire said. “I’ll provide the records through you.”
“We can arrange that. There may be more questions once the matter is reviewed.”
“I know.”
She had spent days trying to keep her address and her children’s routines private. Giving an account would require her to revisit their birth, the document, and the night Adrian was absent. She decided to do it while the details were clear, on terms she could control.
Tessa came to June’s house the next day. They worked at the dining table while June watched the babies upstairs.
Claire described finding the folder. She produced the photographs taken before labor began and the original June had collected afterward. She explained where she had been at 2:18 a.m., and why the acknowledgment could not have been signed by her.
When Tessa asked about Adrian, Claire answered only what she knew.
“He signed the September authorization. He says he did not approve the added pages. The copies I’ve seen support that distinction.”
“You don’t have to defend him,” Tessa said.
“I’m not. I want the account to be accurate.”
They finished near sunset. Claire’s hand hurt from checking the pages and signing her own statement. This time, no one could mistake whether she had chosen to put her name there.
Adrian received a copy through counsel. He read it once, then called Owen.
“Claire is giving them everything she has,” he said.
“Yes.”
“So will I.”
“There may be company records that expose failures beyond Nathan’s actions.”
“I understand.”
Owen paused. “You should have independent advice about your own position.”
“Arrange it. Preserve the records first.”
The next morning, the matter reached the press through someone outside Claire’s circle. A short article mentioned an internal dispute at Vale Harbor Group and a questioned family document. It did not name the twins, but a photograph of Adrian outside company headquarters appeared beside the story.
June found Claire staring at it.
“Can they publish where you are?” June asked.
“They don’t know.”
Claire called Tessa. Together they prepared a brief response confirming that records had been provided for review and asking that the children’s privacy be respected. Claire approved every word before it went out.
Adrian made a separate statement acknowledging his own signature on the original authorization and the company’s cooperation with the investigation. He did not speak for Claire.
That evening, Claire received a message from him through the agreed channel.
I’m sorry the story came out. I didn’t give it to them. I’ll answer for what I signed.
She believed he had not wanted the article. She also knew wanting was a small part of responsibility.
She wrote back:
The children are well. We need a practical plan for how you’ll know them while this continues. Have your family attorney contact Tessa.
After sending it, she stood beside the twins’ bassinets. Her son was awake, studying the ceiling with solemn concentration. Her daughter slept with both fists beside her face.
Claire had left to keep other people from deciding their future without her. Now she would have to decide what place their father could safely have in it.
