"The Morning She Took Them Away" Chapter 8: What Adrian Signed
Chapter 8: What Adrian Signed
Adrian had signed three pages.
The first listed emergency contacts. The second allowed a security coordinator to receive limited information about threats connected to Vale Harbor Group. The third permitted company staff to confirm the family’s location during a documented incident.
It did not mention custody. It did not give anyone authority over the twins’ medical care.
But Claire could see how Nathan had used its language. He had taken phrases about safety and turned them into a plan for her life.
She marked every clause she wanted explained, then called Tessa.
“I’ll speak to Adrian once,” Claire said. “With you present.”
They met by video that afternoon. Adrian joined from Owen’s office. He had shaved and changed his shirt, but there were dark shadows beneath his eyes.
Claire held up the third page. “Why did your company need permission to confirm my location?”
“We’d received threats after the port contract dispute. Ben wanted a procedure in case we had to warn you.”
“Why couldn’t Ben call me?”
“He could. This was for a situation where you didn’t answer.”
“And who decided when that situation existed?”
Adrian glanced at the page. “Nathan approved incident reports.”
“There it is.”
“I didn’t realize the same person could declare an incident and order someone to look for you.”
“You didn’t read it.”
“I read the summary. I signed the pages. That’s on me.”
Claire did not need him to deny it. She needed to know whether he understood what he had permitted.
“Ben gave Nathan June’s address because he thought the agreement allowed it,” she said. “Someone contacted the hospital because the medical form looked like part of the same plan.”
“Yes. Ben has given Owen a full account. The hospital is reviewing its own record of what was disclosed.”
“What have you done about the authorization?”
“Revoked it in writing. Owen notified the security vendor and the hospital. Neither company staff nor contractors are to request information about you or the twins.”
“And if you leave Vale Harbor?”
“The revocation remains. I’ve asked my family attorney to set up an independent way for us to share information about the children.”
Claire put the page down. “I’ll consider that after Tessa reviews it.”
“Of course.”
She almost laughed. Six months ago, Adrian would have sent her an arrangement with everything already decided. Now he waited for her answer. She could not tell how long he would keep doing it.
Tessa asked Adrian to provide the board’s notice concerning Nathan. The company had suspended his access pending an independent review, though he remained a partner. Adrian sent the notice during the call.
Then he said, “Sloane has asked to speak to you.”
“I know.”
“I won’t be there.”
“Good.”
He absorbed that without argument.
Claire ended the call when her son began to cry. She fed him while June reheated lunch. Later, at the twins’ follow-up appointment, the clinician told her they were gaining weight. Claire wrote down the feeding advice and a date for another check.

Outside the examination room, she sat for a moment with both carriers at her feet. She sent Tessa the update to pass to Adrian. He deserved to know his children were well. She still resented that telling him took effort she barely had.
Sloane’s interview took place the next morning. Tessa attended with another lawyer. Claire joined by video from June’s dining room, where she could close the door without being far from the babies.
Sloane appeared in a plain sweater, her hair pulled back. Claire had only seen her dressed for work events or in photographs from places Adrian claimed he had gone alone.
“I gave Tessa the emails,” Sloane said.
“Tell me what they show.”
“Nathan asked me to prepare a family continuity file after the port threats. I used Owen’s draft request portal. He said Adrian knew.”
“Did you add my signature?”
“No.”
“Did you see it before the night the twins were born?”
“I saw a scan two days earlier. I thought Owen’s office had obtained it.”
“You knew I’d declined a meeting.”
Sloane looked down. “Nathan said you later agreed to let Adrian handle it.”
“Did you ask me?”
“No.”
The answer was quiet. Claire waited.
“I should have,” Sloane said.
“You had my number.”
“I know.”
Tessa brought them back to the records. Sloane had an email from Nathan directing her to send a draft medical-information form through the company portal. A later message told her the hospital had received an approved version. Sloane insisted she had not sent that final form.
“How did you know about my daughter’s temperature check?” Claire asked.
Sloane’s face tightened. “Nathan called me after you left the hospital. He said the girl had needed another check. He asked whether I could find out where you’d gone.”
“Did you?”
“No. I called you because I thought you should know he was asking.”
“You told me Owen had mentioned the check.”
“I lied about that. I was afraid you’d hang up if I said Nathan’s name.”
“I did hang up.”
“I deserved that.”
Claire had no interest in granting Sloane relief. “Did Adrian ask you to help him find us?”
“No.”
“Did he tell you about the document?”
“No. We didn’t discuss you much.”
That hurt in a different way. Claire had imagined Sloane and Adrian speaking about her behind her back. Instead, she pictured him leaving his wife out of conversations in which she should have mattered.
Sloane seemed to read her expression.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” she said. “I wanted you to have the emails before Nathan could say they never existed.”
After the call, Tessa sent Claire copies. Nathan’s instructions were there. So were Sloane’s replies. Sloane had accepted his claims about Claire’s consent when asking Claire would have been simple.
Claire forwarded the records to the attorney handling the independent company review. Then she put down the phone and went to help June bathe the twins.
That evening, Owen sent Tessa another finding. Nathan had used Adrian’s genuine September authorization as the source for several pages in the false arrangement. A copy of Claire’s signature from the museum-loan form had been inserted into a later draft. The access logs placed both actions within Nathan’s office.
Claire read the message twice.
She could prove how the document had been made. She could not erase the fact that Adrian’s real signature had supplied the opening.
Her phone buzzed with a text from him.
I understand if you don’t want to answer. Could you tell me what they’re like? Not a photograph. Just something you’ve noticed.
Claire watched her daughter stretch one hand toward her sleeping brother.
After a long time, she typed:
She makes him wake up whenever she cries. He acts annoyed for about three seconds.
The reply came a minute later.
That sounds familiar. Thank you.
Claire set the phone aside. For the first time, sharing something about the children had felt like her choice.
