Chapter 7: The Record Opens
The loading symbol vanished.
A timeline appeared on the conference screen. The acknowledgment bearing Claire’s name had been created at 2:14 a.m. The signature image had been placed on it four minutes later.
At 2:18, Claire had been in the bathtub, giving birth to her daughter.
Tessa pointed to a line beneath the time stamps. “Was an invitation ever sent to Claire to sign?”
The records specialist scrolled down. “No. There’s no invitation, no confirmation from her email, and no action by her on this record.”
Nathan reached for the leather case. “Then someone used the wrong template.”
“Leave it,” Tessa said.
The specialist clicked the next entry. The file had been assembled through a company account assigned to Nathan’s office. A copy had been sent to a printer in the executive suite before dawn.
Claire watched Nathan’s face.
“You brought this here to prove I agreed,” she said. “Did you check the record before you walked in?”
“I received a signed acknowledgment.”
“You received a picture of my name.”
“I had no reason to think—”
“You had every reason to check. You were told I declined the meeting.”
Nathan looked to Owen. “We should discuss the reliability of this system before anyone draws conclusions.”
“We will,” Owen said. “The file and its records are being preserved.”
Adrian stood. Nathan straightened, as though expecting the kind of private confrontation they had settled behind closed doors for years.
Instead, Adrian said, “Your company access is suspended while this is investigated. Owen will arrange for the accounts and devices to be secured.”
“You can’t suspend me over a file you don’t understand.”
“I understand enough to stop you using those accounts today.”
Nathan laughed once. “You’re making a spectacle for Claire.”
Claire gathered the hospital bracelets and slipped them into her pocket. “You brought the paper, Nathan.”
He turned toward her. “I tried to make sure those children had a plan if Adrian’s business put them at risk.”
“You could have asked their mother what she wanted.”
“I did. My assistant invited you.”
Claire looked at the email Tessa had placed before her. “I declined.”
“You never asked why we were concerned.”
“Then tell me now.”
Nathan glanced at Adrian. “The port contract brought threats. He wouldn’t step back from it. Somebody had to consider what would happen to you.”
Claire heard the familiar shape of the excuse. Her father had made decisions for the family because he believed the danger justified them. Adrian had filled their home with guards for the same reason. Nathan had taken it further: he had put her name on his decision.
“If you believed I was in danger,” she said, “you should have told me.”
Nathan had no answer.
Tessa requested copies of the visible records through counsel. Owen agreed. The specialist saved the file’s information and closed the session with both lawyers watching.

Claire rose too quickly. Pain pulled at her stitches, and she gripped the chair. Adrian moved toward her, then stopped when he saw Tessa at her side.
“I’m all right,” Claire said. She waited until the pain eased. “I’m going home to the babies.”
Nathan spoke as she reached the door. “That timestamp doesn’t tell you who placed the signature.”
“No,” Claire said. “It tells me you had no basis to say I signed.”
Outside, she sat in June’s car and let the heater run before putting on her seat belt. Tessa stood by the open door.
“You did what you came to do,” Tessa said.
“Will his suspension hold?”
“That’s a company matter. The records are preserved now. We’ll decide what else to pursue after you’ve rested.”
Claire nodded, but she could not stop thinking about the September packet Adrian had signed. The false acknowledgment was one piece of the plan. The genuine authorization had given someone access to their house, their schedules, and perhaps the hospital.
When she arrived at June’s, both babies were awake. June gave her the girl, who pressed a tiny cheek against Claire’s collarbone.
For a few minutes, Claire did nothing else.
Then her phone rang. It was Tessa.
“Owen found the executive-suite access log,” she said. “Nathan’s office account was used to print the acknowledgment. Sloane’s account opened the file earlier that night.”
“Has anyone spoken to her?”
“She’s asked to speak to us.”
Claire looked at her daughter. “Arrange it.”
“We also have the exact pages Adrian signed in September. The authorization is broader than he described.”
“How broad?”
“It lets the company’s security coordinator handle certain family contact information during a documented threat. It doesn’t authorize anyone to sign for you or obtain unrestricted medical information.”
“But it gave them a way in.”
“Yes.”
Claire had wanted the false signature exposed. It had been. Now she faced the part Adrian could not blame entirely on Nathan: he had handed over access and failed to notice how far it reached.
“Send me the pages,” she said.
When they arrived, Claire read Adrian’s genuine signature at the bottom of each sheet.
