"The Morning She Took Them Away" Chapter 6: In the Same Room
Chapter 6: In the Same Room
Claire arrived carrying the children’s hospital bracelets in her coat pocket.
She had not meant to bring them. June found them on the kitchen counter and handed them over as Claire left, saying only, “You might want these someday.”
Now Claire touched the small plastic bands while she waited outside Owen Price’s conference room. June was at home with the twins. Tessa stood beside her with the folder in a sealed document sleeve.
“You can take a break whenever you need one,” Tessa said.
“I’ll tell you.”
The meeting was at Owen’s office, not Vale Harbor Group. Claire had insisted on it. No company security stood at the door. No one asked for her location beyond the appointment itself.
Adrian was already inside. He rose when she entered.
Claire had imagined seeing him a hundred times since the birth. In each version he said something that angered her. In none of them had he looked so tired.
“Claire,” he said.
She sat across from him. “Let’s look at the papers.”
Owen laid two packets on the table. One was the folder June had collected from Adrian’s study. The other was the original packet held by Owen’s office, still fastened beneath a dated cover sheet.
A records specialist Owen had retained stood nearby to explain the scans and handling logs. Nathan had been invited but had not yet arrived.
“The office packet contains the emergency contact authorization Adrian signed in September,” Owen said. “It does not contain a separation arrangement or a signature attributed to Claire.”
Claire turned toward Adrian. “What did you think you were signing?”
“Instructions for who to call if a threat against the company reached our home. Ben and Owen were listed. I should have read every page. I didn’t.”
“You signed in Owen’s office?”
“Yes.”
“And you never discussed a separation agreement with him?”
“Never.”
Owen confirmed the scope of the office packet. The specialist placed its scan beside the copy from Adrian’s study. Three pages in the latter used wording taken from the genuine security instructions. The rest had been inserted later. The signature page reproduced Adrian’s signature from the genuine packet beneath a new heading.
Claire felt anger rise, then settle into something sharper.
“So he signed one document,” she said, “and someone made it look as if he signed another.”
“That is what the materials suggest,” the specialist said. “I can’t tell you who assembled the new packet from these pages alone.”
Tessa asked about Claire’s signature.
“The image was added to a draft file before printing,” the specialist said. “It is not an ink signature on the page.”
Claire looked at the blue strokes of her name. They had fooled her when she first found the folder.
“Where did the image come from?” she asked.
“We’re tracing that. It resembles a signature on an earlier museum-loan form held by the company.”

She remembered signing that form when she had lent a restored painting for a Vale Harbor fundraiser. She had stood in the foyer while a courier waited. Adrian had smiled and told her it was the only document he would ever ask her to sign for his business.
Claire pushed the memory aside.
“Was the arrangement ever given to anyone outside this office or Adrian’s study?” Tessa asked.
Owen said, “We’re still reviewing distribution. The hospital had the separate medical-information form, but it has withdrawn that form while its origin is examined.”
“That form named Sloane,” Claire said.
“Yes.”
“And Nathan approved it?”
“The portal record shows his account approved the request.”
Adrian’s hand closed around his pen. He put it down before it broke.
Claire turned to him. “You knew she was receiving information about the babies?”
“No.”
“You knew she had access to our personal files?”
“She worked with my executive office. I didn’t know she had access to your medical arrangements.”
“Did she know I was pregnant when the affair began?”
Adrian looked at her. “Yes.”
The answer landed harder because he did not try to soften it.
“And when you turned off your phone?”
“Yes.”
For a moment, Claire could hear the midwife telling her to push. She remembered watching June dial Adrian again, waiting for a voice that never came.
“You could have answered,” she said.
“I could have.”
“You chose not to.”
“Yes.”
Owen and the specialist looked down at their papers. Claire was glad they were there. She did not want this conversation hidden in their bedroom, where Adrian might have reached for her and she might have mistaken relief for forgiveness.
“I didn’t leave because I thought you had an affair,” she said. “I knew about it. I was still deciding what that meant for us.”
Adrian stared at her.
“I left because I found a plan for my children with my name on it. Then I went into labor and you were unreachable. Whatever you intended, I understood that I could not count on you to notice what was happening in your own house.”
Adrian’s face tightened. “You’re right.”
“I need you to understand the difference between saying that here and doing something about it.”
“I do.”
“Then give Tessa every record you have about Nathan’s authority. The company requests, the accounts he can use, the people he can instruct.”
Adrian turned to Owen. “Can we do that?”
“We can identify the relevant records and preserve them. Your company counsel will need to review how they’re produced.”
“Start today,” Adrian said.
Tessa watched him carefully. “This also includes records that may reflect badly on you.”
“I know.”
Owen moved to the next packet. Nathan had sent a statement that morning. He denied directing anyone to forge Claire’s signature. He claimed the draft existed because Adrian wanted “all possible family contingencies” prepared.

“That phrase could cover a blank page,” Claire said. “What did he actually request?”
The specialist brought up a portal entry on the conference screen. Nathan had approved the medical form, but the entry did not show the complete arrangement. A later upload, under an account assigned to Sloane’s department, contained the expanded pages.
“Sloane says Nathan told her the paperwork was approved,” Tessa said.
“And Nathan says he never requested those pages,” Owen replied.
“So each one is pointing at the other.”
Claire leaned forward. “Who had the original folder in Adrian’s study?”
Adrian answered. “Nathan. Sloane. My assistant. Owen’s courier, probably. I don’t know who else.”
“Then the handling record matters more than their explanations.”
The specialist agreed. A desk scanner in the executive office had produced a copy of the expanded packet. Its use was recorded, but the access log had not yet been released.
Tessa asked that the log be preserved. Owen made the request while they watched.
Claire felt her exhaustion returning. She had been away from the twins for nearly three hours. She took the hospital bracelets from her pocket and laid them beside her notebook.
Adrian saw them. He did not ask to touch them.
“The boy’s is smaller,” Claire said. “He was born first. She arrived nine minutes later.”
Adrian nodded, unable to speak.
“They don’t have final names yet,” she said. “I wanted time to meet them before deciding.”
“I’d like to hear what you choose.”
“I know.”
It was as much as she could offer him.
Her phone buzzed with a message from June. Both babies had fed. Both were asleep. Claire showed Tessa, who gave her a small nod toward the door.
Owen’s assistant entered before Claire could rise.
“Nathan Cross is here,” she said.
Nathan came in carrying a slim leather case. He greeted Owen, nodded at Adrian, and looked at Claire with the same courteous smile he had worn at her wedding.
“I’m glad you’re well,” he said.
“Sit down,” Claire answered.
Nathan placed the case on the table. “I understand there’s confusion over the draft. I brought the copy I was given.”
Tessa asked him to leave it closed until the specialist could record its condition. Nathan complied, though his eyes stayed on Claire.
“The document in Adrian’s study was an unfinished proposal,” he said. “No one intended to rely on it.”
“Then why was my signature on it?” Claire asked.
“I can’t account for every administrative error.”
“And the medical form?”
“Prepared out of concern for you and the children.”
“You sent a car to June’s house after I told Adrian we were safe.”
“I was concerned because you had just given birth. I withdrew the car once Adrian objected.”
Claire took a slow breath. Nathan kept answering each act separately, as though the acts could not form a pattern if he described them one at a time.
The specialist photographed the case, opened it, and removed a single sheet. Nathan had brought an acknowledgment bearing Claire’s name.
“I was told you agreed in principle,” Nathan said.
“I did not.”
“This is the record I received.”
He slid it forward. Beneath Claire’s printed name was a mark resembling her signature. Beside it was a time stamp from the night the twins were born.
Nathan glanced at Adrian. “I realize neither of you remembers this clearly. It was a difficult night.”
Claire did remember that night. At the time shown on the page, she had been in the bathroom, gripping the tub while June called for an ambulance.
She put one of the hospital bracelets beside the time stamp.
“My daughter was born nine minutes after my son,” she said. “I know exactly where I was.”
Nathan’s smile faded.
Claire looked to the specialist. “Open the signing record. Here. In front of everyone.”
The specialist connected his laptop to the conference screen and selected the file behind Nathan’s acknowledgment.
