"The Bridegroom Stole More Than My Sister" Chapter 10 — In Her Own Name
Chapter 10 — In Her Own Name
Nora called Priya before she opened the attachment.
“Tell me what you found.”
“The last page of Elaine’s loan agreement was printed with an internal account schedule,” Priya said. “The offsets aren’t payments on her debt. They’re references to transactions involving the same lending company. Sloane approved the first one.”
“Does it show where the money went?”
“Not on that page. We have enough identifiers to request the underlying records.”
Nora looked at the first offset date on her screen. It fell two days before the newsletter attacked Dante’s company. A number beside it matched the lender named on the lien against her mother’s house.
“Evan used his loan to Mom to keep Tessa quiet,” she said. “And he used the same company in the port deal.”
“That’s what the documents suggest. We need the records before we state it as a conclusion.”
“Have you told Calder Vale?”
“I’m sending their counsel the page now. They’ve asked Evan and Sloane to preserve their accounts and communications. Our joint submission goes out in the morning.”
Nora thanked her and called Tessa.
“Mom’s with me,” Tessa said. “Is the house safe?”
“I don’t know yet. Priya is examining the loan. Tell Mom not to agree to any changes or payments Evan proposes without showing Priya.”
“She can hear you.” A pause. “She says she will.”
Nora could picture Elaine sitting beside Tessa, listening to a conversation she would once have insisted belonged inside the family. Nora wanted to speak to her. She needed another hour first.
The next morning, Nora reviewed the joint submission in Priya’s office. Her own statement began with the work she had done on North Pier. It described the limited circulation of the memo, the account download, the matching device identifier at Calder Vale, and Evan’s use of her sentence at the wedding. It included the fact that she had let him use her laptop on an earlier date.
Dante’s company supplied the warning email, its contract history, the newsletter archive, and the complete record of its own warehouse offers. Calder Vale’s internal review supplied the delivery register and transaction timeline. The loan page was identified as a lead requiring verification, not proof of where the money went.
“Ready?” Priya asked.
Nora read the last line of her statement once more.
I did not authorize Evan Mercer to copy, deliver, or use the North Pier memo.
“Yes.”
Priya sent it to the company reviewers and the authorities examining the transaction. For a few seconds, nothing changed. The office printer continued running. Someone laughed in the hall.
Nora had expected a louder moment.
Her phone vibrated before she reached the elevator. Evan had sent a message.
Meet me alone. I can still fix what I told your client.
She showed Priya.
“I’m not going alone,” Nora said. “But I want to hear what he thinks he can fix.”

Priya arranged a meeting in a conference room at Calder Vale that afternoon. Evan arrived with counsel. Nora had Priya beside her. A firm representative sat at the end of the table and said the meeting would be recorded with everyone’s consent.
Evan looked tired. It was the first time Nora had seen him without the polished certainty he wore to every family dinner.
“You could have taken the statement I offered,” he said.
“It left my client wondering whether I leaked the file by accident.”
“I could make that language stronger.”
“You already told them I mishandled confidential work. You need to correct what you said.”
His lawyer touched his sleeve, but Evan kept his eyes on Nora.
“If we agree to that, will you withdraw your complaint?”
“No.”
“I’m trying to give you your career back.”
“You don’t own it.”
He looked toward the recorder. “I heard a sentence from someone I lived with. I used it in a toast. Now I’m being accused of a financial scheme.”
“The delivery record puts a drive copied from my account at your office,” Nora said. “Your firm’s own review puts you on the access list. Those records have nothing to do with whom I’m seeing now.”
Evan’s jaw tightened. “Rinaldi loses a contract, then turns up at my wedding on your arm. You expect anyone to believe that’s chance?”
“I met Dante years after North Pier. The dates are in my statement.”
“His company made an offer on the warehouse while the rumors were spreading.”
“Yes,” Nora said. “That record is in the submission too.”
Evan had been ready for a denial. He glanced at his lawyer, then at the firm representative.
Nora leaned forward. “You wanted me to hide the part that looked bad for Dante, so you could reveal it yourself. We disclosed it.”
“You have no idea what I wanted.”
“Then explain the lending company. Why is the company holding my mother’s loan also listed on your port transaction schedule?”
His lawyer spoke at once. “Mr. Mercer will not discuss unrelated private accounts.”
Evan said nothing. The firm representative wrote down the name of the company.
Nora let the question stand. She had not come for a confession she could force out of him. She had come to correct the record in front of the people who controlled it.
“I want the allegation sent to my client withdrawn in writing,” she said. “I want the firm’s review to address the copied memo and the delivery. Priya will handle any further communication.”
Evan gave her a long look. “You really think Tessa will stand by this when she understands what she’s done?”
“Tessa can speak for herself.”
The meeting ended without a deal. By the time Nora reached the lobby, Calder Vale’s counsel had asked Evan to surrender his firm devices pending its review. Sloane had also been placed on leave. Priya warned Nora that those steps were temporary. Nora knew. Temporary was still a change from Evan calling her a liar without consequence.
Outside, Tessa stood under the building’s awning. She had come to meet Priya about the loan.
“Evan called me,” she said when Nora approached. “He said you’re using Mom’s house to hurt him.”
“Priya will tell you what the document shows.”
“I know. I told him I’m giving her my account.”
Nora studied her sister’s face. “You don’t have to convince me in a doorway.”
“I’m going to do it anyway.”
Priya invited Tessa upstairs. Before following, Nora called Dante. He answered on the first ring.
“How did it go?”
“He tried to use your warehouse offer. It was already in the submission.”
“I told the board we would disclose it.”
“Are they angry?”
“Yes.”
“Are you?”
“At you? No.”
Nora watched people hurry around a puddle at the curb. “I don’t know what the review will find about anyone on your side.”
“Neither do I.”
It was an answer she could live with.
“I’ll call tonight,” she said.
Upstairs, Priya was waiting with a new message from Calder Vale’s counsel. The firm had located an archived approval packet for the warehouse transaction. Sloane’s authorization was there, as expected.
So was a note from his assistant forwarding Evan’s proposed payment schedule to the lending company before the first newsletter was published.
The last missing link was no longer hidden in a wedding toast. It was in a record Evan had made at work.
