"The Bridegroom Stole More Than My Sister" Chapter 6 — The Second Toast
Chapter 6 — The Second Toast
Nora arrived at her mother’s Sunday brunch with a folder in her bag and Priya’s instructions in her head.
The location was a private dining room at a restaurant near the estate. Evan and Tessa had returned from a short trip the night before. Sixteen relatives were already seated when Nora entered.
Dante had driven her, but stayed outside. They had agreed on that together. Nora wanted no one to claim he had directed what she said.
Tessa rose when she saw her. Evan remained seated beside her, one arm draped over the back of her chair.
“You came,” Elaine said.
“You asked me to.”
“I hoped we could talk as a family.”
Nora took the empty seat across from Evan. “Then we should talk.”
For the first twenty minutes, nobody did. Plates arrived. An uncle praised the wedding flowers. Tessa pushed food around her plate without eating.
Evan waited until coffee was served.
“I’m glad we’re all here,” he said. “Nora has been contacting my employer about material she believes I took from her years ago. She’s also spoken with a man whose company was involved in the same business dispute.”
Nora set down her cup.
“That makes it sound as if you just learned about North Pier,” she said.
“I learned you were blaming me for it.”
“What did you learn before you used a sentence from its private memo in your toast?”
A few people looked between them. Evan gave a patient smile.
“Nora, we lived together. You talked about work constantly. I don’t remember where I heard one line.”
“You emailed me after the wedding saying I gave you access to my laptop. No one had mentioned the laptop to you.”
“You’re proving my point. I used it. You know I used it.”
“On October seventeenth,” she said. “That isn’t the date I’m asking about.”
His smile thinned.
Elaine leaned forward. “Could we have this conversation without interrogating each other?”
“Evan has already contacted one of my clients,” Nora said. “My work is on hold. This conversation followed me into my office before it reached this table.”
“I told them there might be a confidentiality issue,” Evan said. “They deserved to know.”
Nora looked at her mother. “That’s why I’m here.”
She removed the first sheet from her folder. Priya had reviewed every page Nora carried. None contained the North Pier memo or client material.
“This is my calendar invitation for October nineteenth, three years ago,” Nora said. “I was on a client call from ten-thirty until eleven that morning. This is a message from Tessa arriving at my building at ten-thirty-one.”
Tessa gripped the edge of the table.
“And this,” Nora continued, “is the date and time of an unusual download on my work account, recorded in an incident note from my former agency. Ten-forty-two. They’ve preserved the underlying log for review.”

Evan barely glanced at the pages.
“You worked from home. Someone downloaded a file using your account. That sounds like your problem.”
“For a long time, I thought it was.” Nora placed the papers back in the folder. “I told IT I’d been working that morning because I had. I wasn’t asked whether a storage device had been connected while I was on the call.”
That got his attention. Only for a second, but she saw it.
“You’re guessing,” he said.
“I’m investigating.”
Evan turned to the others. “She came here with a story and a binder. She can’t accept that we moved on.”
Nora let him finish. He had spent years making an audience think her anger was the issue. She wanted this audience to hear his account in full.
Then she took out the receipt email.
“On the same day, external media was delivered to your office,” she said. “Calder Vale sent a notice with a delivery number. Their records department has preserved the signed receipt.”
Evan’s expression settled again. “Packages arrive at our office every day.”
“They do. That’s why a receipt alone doesn’t prove what was inside. I haven’t said it does.”
She looked toward Tessa. Her sister was staring at the tablecloth.
“The old project alert and the lobby delivery are two separate records,” Nora said. “Together with the toast, they’re enough to demand proper answers. They’re also enough for my client to understand why your allegation against me was premature.”
Evan reached for his water glass and missed it. He recovered quickly.
“Did Rinaldi coach you through this?” he asked.
“Priya Shah is my attorney. My former agency has its own records manager. I assembled my calendar and messages.”
“You think anyone here believes you suddenly remembered all this after three years?”
“I remembered the morning. I didn’t know there was a storage-device alert until this week.”
Tessa lifted her head. “Evan.”
He turned on her. “Don’t.”
Nora saw several relatives look at Tessa. She did not ask her sister to perform a confession for them. Tessa’s recorded account was with Priya, and the decision to speak here was Tessa’s to make.
Instead, Nora reached into her folder once more.
“Calder Vale’s notice went to your account,” she told Evan. “It was copied to an address I used for event bookings, so I have the original email. The attached signature file failed to open after all these years. Priya has now obtained a preserved copy of the receipt through the firm’s review.”
Evan straightened. “Then give it to my lawyer.”
“She will.”
“Why bring it here?”
“Because you brought accusations about my work to my family. You expected me to sit here and defend myself without showing them what I’d found.”
Nora placed the single-page receipt facedown on the table. She kept her hand on it.
Elaine’s gaze moved from Nora to Tessa. “Who signed it?”
Tessa closed her eyes.
Evan said, “Nora, stop.”
It was the first time all morning he had sounded afraid.
Nora looked at him. “You told everyone I invented this because I couldn’t bear to see you married.”
“I told them the truth.”
“Then the name on this receipt won’t trouble you.”
She turned the page over but held it facing herself. Across the table, Tessa’s hands trembled.
Nora had spent years being told to keep family matters private. Evan had used that silence to make her look unreliable. She would not let him choose what her family heard today.
She looked directly at him.
“Do you want me to read out who signed for the drive?”
