"The Man at the Back of Her Line" Chapter 3: Order Number Forty-Seven
Chapter 3: Order Number Forty-Seven
Luca joined the lunch line without looking toward the window.
Claire looked anyway.
He stood behind a nurse in blue scrubs and a teenager with a skateboard. Evan joined the line two places back, studying the menu as if he had not memorized it. Jules leaned close to Claire.
"He's trainable."
"Don't say that where he can hear you."
"I'm saying it for him to hear."
Claire ladled sauce over chicken and called order forty-six. She had slept badly after the settlement offer. Mrs. Alvarez's daughter had agreed to speak to the legal clinic, and the bicycle mechanic was searching his bank records. Claire had placed their documents in separate envelopes so no one accidentally surrendered an original.
She had also copied every message from the redevelopment company onto a drive Jules kept off-site.
At the window, Luca accepted a paper tray without comment.
"No objection?" Claire asked.
"I'm adapting."
"Dangerous habit."
His receipt read 47. She wrote the number on the edge of his tray in thick black marker. He looked at it with the grave attention he gave contracts.
"The offer came from Graham's office," he said quietly. "Priya told him all tenant communications now go through counsel."
"That should have happened before I closed."
"Yes."
It was an answer without excuses. Claire was still deciding what to do with it when a young man beside the truck asked for extra sauce. She returned to work.
After the rush, Luca remained at the folding table. He had ordered food for Evan, who seemed to have formed a permanent attachment to Claire's garlic potatoes.
Claire brought her laptop outside. "I found something."
The old emails were not easy to navigate. She had saved exports from two different accounts, and Jules had labeled one folder
Do Not Delete Again
. But Claire had spent six years keeping invoices straight in a restaurant where the dishwasher occasionally hid receipts in the flour bin. Disorder did not frighten her.
She opened an attachment sent to her eight days before the supposed voluntary relocation agreement. It was a construction schedule from a subcontractor, copied to her because someone still had the restaurant listed as an active tenant.
The entry for her address read:
Interior strip-out. Vacant possession confirmed.
Eight days before the document claimed she had agreed to leave.
"That could be an error in the schedule," Luca said.
"It could. Look at the revision."
She opened the next file. Same address, same work date, revision approved by Graham Vale's office. The comments field said the storefront must be cleared before the hotel entrance survey.
"They scheduled my empty restaurant while I was still cooking in it."
Luca scrolled through the file header. "Send this to Priya from your original account. She'll preserve the email and attachment together."
"Already done."
He looked at her.
"I can use a laptop, Moretti."

"I never suggested otherwise."
"Your face did."
Evan coughed into his potatoes. Luca ignored him.
Later that afternoon, Priya confirmed the schedule's receipt date and linked it to an internal project calendar. It did not prove who forged Claire's signature. It did show that Graham's team had planned for the restaurant to be empty before recording her consent.
Luca took the findings to a small meeting room with Evan and Priya. His financial officer joined by video.
Graham's performance agreement sat at the center of the table. His bonus rose when existing units became available ahead of schedule and when redevelopment costs stayed within a target. The contractor invoices pushed costs up; the early vacancies raised the projected hotel value. The incentives did not explain every dollar, but they explained his urgency.
"We need his communications with Varenna," Priya said. "The preservation notice covers them. The audit team can image the project accounts before interviewing him."
"He'll know something's happening," the financial officer said.
"He knows," Luca replied. "He made a settlement offer after the records were requested."
Luca wanted to call Graham upstairs that minute. Priya recommended waiting until the records were secured. He listened.
Back at the truck, Claire's afternoon was less orderly.
An online food account had recommended Bennett's Table. The line reached the corner. Jules handled payments while Claire worked the grill with a second employee who had never seen the dinner rush at the old restaurant and now understood why Claire refused to guess at an allergy.
A man at the window wanted to know whether the sauce contained nuts. Claire set aside his order, checked every ingredient label, and made it herself. The delay irritated the next customer.
"You'll get your food," she told him. "He needs to get his safely."
Luca arrived while she was wiping down the counter after the rush. He picked up a stack of loose napkins that the wind had scattered.
"Those go in the bin," she said.
"They're clean."
"I don't serve napkins off the sidewalk."
He dropped them in the bin. "I can fold the new ones."
"You run a development company."
"And yet I have two hands."
His first folded napkin resembled a small, defeated tent. Claire laughed despite the day. She demonstrated. He tried again.
For several minutes they stood shoulder to shoulder, performing a task neither of them needed to make important. That was precisely why she liked it.
"You could have told me about the closing," he said.
"I barely knew you outside a Thursday reservation."
"Six years of Thursdays."
"You never asked me anything you couldn't order from the menu."
He set down a napkin. "You're right."
Claire had expected a defense, perhaps a clever response. His admission left her with nowhere to hide.
Jules came out with a clipboard. "Before you two make the napkins uncomfortable, we have another city complaint."
Claire took it. This one alleged that the truck had operated after its permitted hours the previous Tuesday. It hadn't. On Tuesday, they had closed early for a broken refrigerator latch.
Only four people knew the exact time they had left the site: Claire, Jules, a neighboring vendor, and whoever had access to the timestamped camera footage submitted with their permit records.
There was a photograph attached to the complaint. It showed the truck in the evening, its service window shut. The image itself disproved the allegation, but its angle was from the roof of the privately managed parking structure across the street.
Luca recognized the structure. Moretti Urban's project office leased its top floor.
"Don't touch the original," Claire told him as he reached for the page. She took a picture and passed him the phone instead.
He zoomed in on the timestamp. "I'll ask Priya to preserve the garage cameras."
"Ask her who requested this still," Claire said. "If it came through your office, I want the request."
He nodded.
Claire had thought the false complaints were meant to wear her down. Now somebody was watching closely enough to choose photographs from across the street—and careless enough to show where they were taken.
