"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 9 — The Voice Sofia Saved
Ricardo left the hospital against medical advice eleven minutes after Evelyn showed him the custody order.
Clara followed him into the elevator.
“If you storm Aria Child Services with armed men, Reed will use it to bury you.”
“He took my son.”
“Then we bring Leo home in a way Reed cannot reverse.”
Ricardo pressed the lobby button hard enough to whiten his knuckle. “The court gave my child to the organization that helped kill his mother.”
“A corrupt judge signed an unlawful placement. That means Evelyn can challenge it.”
“While Leo waits with strangers?”
“No.” Clara stepped between him and the doors. “While we prove where they took him.”
The order listed an Aria office in White Plains, but Dante’s team found it empty. County dispatch had no record of the sedan that removed Leo. The two officers’ badge numbers belonged to deputies working in another district.
Reed had created a legal-looking abduction.
At the estate, Mrs. Alvarez waited with Leo’s rabbit. Its seam had been cut during the search.
“They handed it back before leaving,” she said. “He cried for Clara. The woman told him good boys do not cry.”
Clara’s anger became cold and useful.
She examined the rabbit. Something hard pressed beneath the cotton stuffing.
Mrs. Alvarez found a seam ripper. Clara opened the lining and removed a tiny digital recorder wrapped in wax paper.
Ricardo stared at it. “Sofia hid another device.”
“Or Leo did,” Clara said.
Mrs. Alvarez shook her head. “Sofia repaired that rabbit the week before she died. She said the heart inside needed extra protection.”
Dante connected the recorder to an offline laptop. Most files contained Sofia singing, Leo babbling, and ordinary sounds from the nursery.
The final recording was different.
Sofia spoke in a whisper.
“Malcolm, you told me Aria was independent.”
Judge Reed answered, “It will be, once the transfer is complete.”
“Gabriel controls it.”
“Gabriel controls the people who protect you. Ricardo controls the people who frighten you. I control the legal structure that gets Leo out.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I corrected an inconsistency.”
The recording captured Sofia threatening to expose the trust scheme. Reed warned that if Ricardo learned she had cooperated, he would take Leo and destroy her reputation.
Then Gabriel entered.
“The car is ready,” he said.
Sofia’s last clear words were meant for Leo.
“If Mommy cannot come back, remember the song. It opens the truth.”
The file ended.
Evelyn immediately sent encrypted copies to the Westchester County district attorney, the New York State inspector general, and a federal prosecutor investigating Moretti shell companies.
Dante preserved the recorder in a clean evidence bag while Evelyn photographed its serial number and original position inside the rabbit. The device’s internal clock matched Sofia’s phone records and the estate gate log from the night of her death. The audio was no longer merely a dead woman’s accusation. It had a verifiable time, place, and chain of custody.

“Reed will call it fabricated,” Clara said.
“He can call it anything he wants,” Evelyn replied. “Now experts can prove he is lying.”
“Now they have to move,” she said.
“How long?” Ricardo asked.
“Hours, if we are lucky.”
“We do not have hours.”
Dante found the answer inside the audio metadata. The recorder had connected briefly to a wireless network while Leo was being taken. The network name belonged to Bellweather House, a private children’s residence in Bedford formerly operated by Aria.
Ricardo reached for his coat.
Clara stopped him again. “We need proof Leo is there.”
“We have a signal.”
“We need something a judge other than Reed can act on.”
Evelyn called Denise Carter, the social worker who had inspected the estate. Denise had already questioned why Leo’s placement bypassed county intake. She agreed to request an emergency welfare check through state police.
They drove to Bedford without weapons visible. Two state troopers met them half a mile from Bellweather House, a brick mansion hidden behind bare trees and an electronic gate.
The director refused entry.
“No child named Leo Moretti is in our care,” she said through the intercom.
From inside the house came a crash.
Then a little boy screamed, “Clara!”
She ran for the gate.
One trooper caught her before she climbed it. The second ordered the director to open under emergency child-welfare authority.
The gate remained locked.
Ricardo walked to the control box. Clara saw the violence gathering in him.
“Leo can hear you,” she said.
He forced his hands away.
Dante disabled the gate without damaging it. The troopers entered first.
They found Leo in an upstairs room with paper covering the windows. A woman wearing an Aria badge stood between him and the door. There were no toys, no bed, and no licensed medical staff.
Clara dropped to her knees.
Leo ran into her arms so hard they both fell against the wall.
“You came back.”
“I promised.”
Ricardo knelt beside them. Leo hesitated only a second before climbing into his father’s embrace.
“Daddy didn’t hit?” he asked.
“Daddy did not hit anyone.”
“Good.”
The state police arrested the director for obstruction and suspected custodial interference. Leo left with Denise under an emergency protective plan placing him temporarily with Clara at the Moretti estate, subject to review by a different judge the next morning.
It was not victory. It was one safe night.
In the car, Leo fell asleep across Clara and Ricardo’s laps.
“You controlled yourself,” Clara said.
“I hated every second.”
“That is what control means.”
He looked down at his son. “You are his safe person.”
“So are you, when you stay.”
Ricardo remembered Leo’s words during the home inspection. His eyes closed briefly.
Back at the estate, federal agents waited in the study. The recorder implicated Reed and Gabriel, but Reed had already moved to suppress the files as unlawfully obtained. Gabriel announced a Moretti Foundation gala for the following evening, claiming he would address “dangerous falsehoods” about the family.
Evelyn understood the move. “He wants the board to appoint him emergency trustee before Reed is removed.”
“Can they?” Clara asked.
“If Ricardo is under federal investigation and Leo is considered endangered, yes.”
Ricardo turned toward the agents. “What do you want from me?”
The lead prosecutor placed a cooperation agreement on the desk. In exchange for authenticated records exposing Reed, Gabriel, and the Moretti financial network, prosecutors would consider reduced charges against Ricardo and support a safe restructuring of Leo’s trust.
Clara read the final condition.
Ricardo had to surrender control of every company used by the organization.
His empire.
“If you sign,” Evelyn said, “Gabriel loses the structure he is trying to inherit.”
“And hundreds of people lose protection,” Ricardo replied.
“Protection or obedience?” Clara asked.
He met her eyes.
At midnight, Ricardo signed.
The next evening, Gabriel stepped onto the gala stage before donors, reporters, and the Moretti board.
“My cousin has endangered his child and betrayed this family,” he announced.
The ballroom screens changed behind him.
Sofia appeared, alive in recorded video.
“If you are seeing this,” she said, “Gabriel and Judge Reed tried to steal my son’s future.”
Gabriel turned toward the control booth.
Every exit locked.
Ricardo walked into the ballroom with Clara on one side and federal agents on the other.
“You wanted control of my empire,” he said. “So I made sure there was no empire left for you to take.”
