"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 8 — The Man Who Came for Her
Clara woke tied to a metal chair in an abandoned machine shop.
Rain hammered the broken skylights. Her head throbbed, and one side of her gown was black with soot. Across the room, a phone on a tripod showed a live video of the Moretti estate burning at one window.
Gabriel stepped into view.
“My cousin always did mistake possession for devotion,” he said.
Clara tested the plastic restraints around her wrists. “You murdered Sofia.”
“That is an emotionally satisfying theory.”
“Your biometric record put you in the garage.”
His smile vanished for half a second.
“Dante found the second log,” she said.
“Then Dante has finally become inconvenient.”
Gabriel pulled another chair close. He explained that Sofia had approached Judge Reed after deciding to remove Ricardo from Leo’s trust. Reed promised an independent trustee and a safe exit from New York.
Instead, he created a structure controlled through Aria Child Services. Gabriel would manage the voting shares. Reed would protect the transfers in family court.
“Sofia discovered the substitution,” Clara said.
“Too late.”
“So you followed her.”
“Ricardo followed her. I merely arrived after he made himself useful.”
Gabriel found Ricardo unconscious in the garage and forced Sofia into the passenger seat. A hired driver took the wheel. The car was supposed to be abandoned near the river after Sofia signed new documents.
“She fought,” Gabriel said. “The driver lost control.”
“You call that an accident?”
“I call it poor planning.”
Clara wanted to lunge at him, but anger would not free her. She looked instead at the phone, the exits, and the rusted equipment surrounding them.
“Why bring me here?”
“Because Ricardo will trade the card for you.”
“The police can copy digital evidence.”
“Ricardo has not given it to the police. Men like us distrust institutions for excellent reasons.”
Gabriel was right. Ricardo had protected the evidence inside his own walls.
The phone rang.
Gabriel answered on video. Ricardo’s face appeared, lit by the flashing lights of emergency vehicles.
“Show me Clara.”
Gabriel turned the screen.
Ricardo saw the restraints and went still.
“Are you hurt?” he asked.
“I’m awake.”
“That was not the question.”
Even now, the familiar demand steadied her.
“My head hurts. Nothing is broken.”
Gabriel moved the phone back. “Box 317. Every original item. Bring them to Pier Forty in one hour.”
“If you touch her—”
“You will do what? Kill me? Then Reed grants me temporary guardianship in death through my designated successor. Sofia built a trap, cousin. We merely learned to live inside it.”
The call ended.
Clara looked at Gabriel. “You still need Leo.”
“I need control of his trust until he turns twenty-five.”
“And after that?”
“By then, he will sign whatever his family asks.”
“You don’t know him.”
“He is three.”
“And he already knows not to trust you.”
Gabriel struck her across the face.
Clara tasted blood. She smiled anyway.

“There it is. The man behind the pleasant voice.”
He left her with two guards.
At the estate, Ricardo refused Gabriel’s instructions before Dante finished playing the recorded call.
“Pier Forty is a distraction,” Dante said. “The background echo places her in a larger building.”
Mrs. Alvarez entered carrying Leo’s tablet. “He says he saw the false firefighter’s truck.”
Leo had been drawing beside the driveway when the kidnappers arrived. On his tablet, he had accidentally captured three seconds of video. A faded logo appeared on the truck door: ARIA MECHANICAL.
Evelyn found a defunct Aria Mechanical property in Yonkers, twelve miles from the estate.
Ricardo loaded his weapon.
Dante blocked the door. “Gabriel expects that.”
“Then he will not be disappointed.”
“If you go in angry, Clara dies.”
Ricardo’s face tightened.
Leo stood on the staircase clutching his rabbit.
“Bring Clara home,” he said.
Ricardo looked at his son, then handed Dante the weapon.
“We do it your way.”
At the machine shop, Clara worked one wrist against a jagged metal edge beneath the chair. The plastic restraint stretched but did not break.
One guard watched the loading bay. The other scrolled through his phone.
Clara kicked a loose bolt across the floor.
It struck a gasoline can.
Both men turned toward the sound. She threw her weight sideways, toppled the chair, and caught the sharp edge again. The restraint snapped.
She freed one hand, grabbed the bolt, and struck the nearest guard’s knee. He fell with a curse.
The second guard reached for her.
The loading-bay lights died.
Dante’s team entered through the roof and side doors. Suppressed shots struck concrete. Clara crawled behind a machine as Ricardo came through the darkness without firing.
He found her by the fallen chair.
“Clara.”
She rose into his arms.
He held her so tightly she could feel his heart pounding.
“You came without the card,” she said.
“I came with a plan. Apparently, you found your own.”
Gabriel’s voice sounded from the catwalk. “Touching.”
He aimed a pistol at Clara.
Ricardo turned, shielding her with his body.
The shot cracked.
Dante fired at the same moment. Gabriel’s weapon flew from his hand, and he escaped through an upper door while his remaining men covered him.
Ricardo looked down at his side. Blood spread across his shirt.
“You’re hit.”
“A graze.”
Clara pressed both hands against the wound. “You stepped in front of me.”
“There was nowhere else I was going to stand.”
Police sirens approached. Evelyn had insisted on notifying federal agents and the Westchester County district attorney before the raid, preventing Gabriel from controlling the official response.
In the ambulance, Clara sat beside Ricardo while a paramedic closed the shallow wound with strips.
“Leo asked me to bring you home,” Ricardo said.
“And you always obey three-year-olds?”
“Only the terrifying ones.”
His hand closed around hers.
“I love you.”
The words were quiet, unplanned, and more frightening than the gunshot.
Clara stared at him.
“You do not have to answer,” he said.
“Good, because your timing is terrible.”
Relief and hurt crossed his face together.
She leaned forward and kissed him.
“But I’m not leaving.”
At the hospital, Evelyn arrived with worse news. Gabriel had filed an emergency motion claiming Ricardo staged the kidnapping to intimidate the court. Judge Reed had signed an order removing Leo from the estate pending the custody hearing.
“Where is Leo?” Ricardo demanded.
Evelyn’s voice broke.
“Court officers took him twenty minutes ago.”
Mrs. Alvarez called Clara before Evelyn finished speaking. Her voice shook as she described two county officers arriving with valid badges and a signed order. Dante’s guards had blocked the front steps, but Mrs. Alvarez had stopped them from creating an armed confrontation around Leo.
“He asked for you,” she said. “I told him you were bringing his father home.”
“Was he frightened?”
“He did not cry until they took his rabbit to search it.”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Did you see the vehicle?”
“A county sedan. But the woman in the back seat wore an Aria badge.”
Evelyn took the phone. “County records say Aria has no active foster-care license.”
The order was legally formatted and judicially signed, but the placement itself was unlawful. Reed had used the court not merely to influence custody, but to deliver Leo directly into a private network he controlled.
She placed the order on Ricardo’s bed.
Leo had not been sent to Gabriel.
Judge Reed had placed him in the temporary custody of Aria Child Services—the company Sofia discovered was controlled by Reed’s own family.
