"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 6 — The Missing Seven Minutes
“That is not live,” Clara said.
Ricardo turned on her. “What?”
“Leo is wearing last night’s tuxedo shirt. Mrs. Alvarez changed him before we left.”
Dante checked the time code. “Recorded at 2:14 a.m.”
The gunman beside Leo lifted one hand toward the camera. A silver cuff link flashed beneath his sleeve.
Then the screen displayed a message:
LEAVE THE CARD. TAKE THE BOY HOME.
The vault lights returned. The door unlocked with a heavy click.
Ricardo called the estate. Mrs. Alvarez answered on the second ring, breathless but safe. Leo was eating toast beside her. Every guard had been ordered to verify him in person.
The core threat was answered within minutes: no one held Leo at gunpoint now.
But someone had entered Ricardo’s home hours earlier, stood over his sleeping child, and recorded it.
“They could have killed him,” Ricardo said.
Clara heard the terror beneath the words. “They chose not to. They need him alive.”
“For the voting trust,” Evelyn said.
Dante removed the microSD card and sealed it inside an evidence pouch. “We need to leave by separate routes.”
Ricardo looked at Clara. “You ride with me.”
“Not until you explain the video.”
“This is not the place.”
“That answer has protected you long enough.”
She walked toward the vault exit. Ricardo caught her wrist, then released it immediately when she looked down at his hand.
“Seven minutes are missing because I was unconscious,” he said.
Clara stopped.
On the night Sofia died, Ricardo had followed her to the garage after discovering she had changed Leo’s trust. They argued. He took the folder from the passenger seat.
“Then someone struck me from behind,” he said. “I woke on the concrete. Sofia and the car were gone.”
“Why didn’t you tell the police?”
“Because the folder was beside me, my fingerprints were in her car, and I had threatened to stop her from leaving. By sunrise, her car was in the Hudson.”
“You let everyone believe it was an accident.”
“The state police found a damaged guardrail and no evidence of another vehicle.”
“You had evidence.”
“I had a bruise and a story that made me the obvious suspect.”
Clara’s anger remained, but the video now looked different. Ricardo had reached inside the car for documents, not for Sofia. Someone had cut the recording precisely before the attack on him.
Evelyn returned to the laptop. “The file metadata shows an edit seven minutes and twelve seconds long.”
“Can it be recovered?” Clara asked.
“Possibly,” Dante said. “Not here.”
The bank chairman entered with security officers. He claimed a software failure had sealed the vault. Ricardo did not believe him.
Neither did Clara.
They left through the loading dock. In the SUV, Ricardo sat opposite Clara while Manhattan moved beyond smoked glass.
“Why was your face the last one Sofia saw on the recording?” she asked.
“Because someone wanted Leo to see it one day.”

“Or a jury.”
“Or you.”
The answer carried no self-pity. That made it harder to dismiss.
At the estate, Leo ran into Clara’s arms. Only after she lifted him did he reach for Ricardo too.
Ricardo held them both for one unguarded second.
Then he saw the silver cuff link on the paused security image.
“Dante wears those,” he said.
The room went silent.
Dante looked down at his cuffs. Each bore a black onyx center surrounded by silver.
“Sofia gave them to me when Leo was born.”
Ricardo drew his gun.
Clara stepped between them.
“Move.”
“No.”
“A man wearing his cuff link stood over my son.”
“That proves a cuff link was there. It does not prove Dante was.”
Dante slowly removed his weapon and placed it on the table.
“Search my rooms,” he said. “Search my accounts. But if I wanted Leo, I’ve had three years to take him.”
Ricardo’s gun remained raised.
Leo began to cry.
The sound broke the standoff. Ricardo lowered the weapon.
“Dante stays in the east guest room under guard,” he ordered. “No phone.”
“Ricardo—”
“That is the only reason he is alive.”
Dante walked away without resisting.
Clara carried Leo into the garden. Ricardo followed after several minutes.
“You pointed a gun at the man who has protected your child since birth.”
“I pointed it at a suspect.”
“You are turning everyone who loves you into evidence.”
His face closed. “Love did not save Sofia.”
“No. But secrecy helped kill her.”
He looked toward the river.
“You should leave,” he said.
The words landed more painfully than Clara expected.
“Is that an order?”
“It is the first decent thing I have offered you. Someone has your history, access to this house, and the ability to reach Leo. Staying beside me makes you a target.”
“I became a target when I picked him up in that restaurant.”
“Then I will pay you the full amount and place you somewhere safe.”
“You cannot purchase my choices.”
“I am trying to keep you alive.”
“By deciding for me. Just like you decided for Sofia.”
He flinched.
Clara regretted the cruelty but not the truth.
Ricardo stepped close enough that she could see exhaustion beneath his eyes.
“When Sofia left that garage, I thought anger was the worst thing between us,” he said. “An hour later, she was dead. I will not make that mistake with you.”
“Then don’t send me away angry.”
His gaze dropped to her mouth.
The space between them changed.
“Clara.”
“You keep saying my name like a warning.”
“It is.”
“For which one of us?”
He kissed her.
It was not gentle at first. It carried grief, fear, and weeks of control breaking at once. Clara gripped his lapels, kissed him back, then pushed against his chest.
Ricardo stopped immediately.
They stood inches apart, breathing hard.
“That cannot be why I stay,” she said.
“I know.”
“And it cannot be part of your custody performance.”
“It wasn’t.”
For the first time, Clara believed him without evidence.
Her phone buzzed. Dante’s confiscated number appeared on the screen, although his phone was locked in Ricardo’s study.
She answered on speaker.
A mechanical voice said, “Dante Russo betrayed Sofia. Ask him what he hid beneath Leo’s crib.”
Ricardo and Clara ran upstairs.
Guards pulled the crib away from the wall. Beneath the wooden frame, taped inside a hollow support, they found a thumb-sized device with a blinking green light.
Dante was brought into the room.
He stared at it with genuine shock.
One guard scanned the serial number.
“It’s registered to Russo Security Consulting.”
Ricardo’s expression turned lethal.
Dante looked at Clara instead of him.
“That device is mine,” he said. “But I did not put it there.”
Clara examined the adhesive holding it beneath the crib. A strand of pale blue fiber clung to one edge.
Leo touched it. “Mommy blanket.”
Mrs. Alvarez fetched the blanket Sofia had used when Leo was an infant. Its satin border matched the fiber.
“Then it was placed before Sofia died,” Clara said.
Dante shook his head. “No. I replaced the crib after the funeral. The original went into storage.”
Someone had taken material from Sofia’s belongings to make old evidence appear authentic. The frame was becoming clearer: forged signatures, edited video, stolen security hardware, and sentimental details chosen to turn Ricardo against everyone closest to him.
“This is not proof Dante betrayed you,” Clara said. “It is proof someone studied how you would react.”
