"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 5 — What Sofia Left Behind
Ricardo sent Leo home in an armored SUV while Clara remained at the Halcyon Hotel.
The wounded kidnapper had survived, but an ambulance took him away under police guard before Dante could question him. Gabriel vanished during the blackout. Judge Reed claimed he had spent the entire attack sheltering guests in the ballroom.
No one could explain how the attacker carried a page written by Sofia.
Ricardo stood in the service corridor with blood on his cuff that was not his own. “We go to the bank now.”
Evelyn checked the time. “Hudson Crown closed three hours ago.”
“The chairman is upstairs.”
“You cannot threaten a bank officer at his own charity gala.”
“Then you ask politely while I stand behind you.”
Clara touched Ricardo’s arm. He looked at her hand as though no one had ever stopped him that way.
“Leo saw someone try to take him,” she said. “Go home. Let him see you came back.”
“The box may identify Sofia’s killer.”
“And your living son needs his father tonight.”
His jaw flexed.
Dante handed Evelyn the brass key. “I’ll secure the bank. She’s right about the boy.”
Ricardo gave the order reluctantly. Within twenty minutes, Clara sat beside Leo in the SUV while he clutched her dress in one fist and Ricardo’s sleeve in the other.
At the estate, Leo refused to enter his bedroom. Clara made a blanket tent in the family room instead. Ricardo crawled beneath it in his tuxedo, his shoulders nearly collapsing the entire structure.
“Daddy too big,” Leo announced.
“I have been accused of worse.”
Clara handed Ricardo a picture book. “Read.”
“It is about a rabbit.”
“Your criminal empire will survive.”
He read in the same voice he used to issue commands. By the third page, Leo corrected him.
“Bunny sad.”
Ricardo looked at the illustration. “The text says he is lost.”
“Lost is sad,” Clara said.
Ricardo read the page again, more softly.
Leo fell asleep between them. Clara tried to move, but his hand had wrapped around the emerald ring.
Ricardo noticed.
“He thinks it means you’re staying.”
“That is what I warned you about.”
“I know.”
For once, he did not offer a solution money could purchase.
Clara studied his face in the dim light beneath the blankets. “Were you at Leo’s birthday dinner?”
“Yes.”
“Did you argue with Sofia?”
His silence answered first.
“She wanted to leave New York with Leo,” he said. “I refused.”
“Why?”
“Because someone had threatened us. I thought this house was the safest place.”
“Did you tell her that?”
“I told her she was not taking my son.”
Clara heard the difference.
“That sounds like ownership.”
“It sounded worse that night.”
He looked at Leo.
“Sofia said if I loved him, I would let him grow up without becoming me. Gabriel laughed. Dante told him to leave. Sofia threw a glass at the wall.”

“Who else knew she planned to run?”
“Her attorney. Maybe the judge handling the trust.”
“Malcolm Reed?”
Ricardo nodded.
Clara’s skin chilled.
At eight the next morning, Hudson Crown Bank opened its private entrance for them. The chairman personally led Ricardo, Clara, Evelyn, and Dante below street level to a vault lined with steel boxes.
“Box 317 is jointly registered to Sofia Moretti and a trust,” he said.
“Which trust?” Evelyn asked.
“The beneficiary designation is sealed.”
“Unseal it.”
The chairman glanced at Ricardo. “That requires a court order.”
Ricardo stepped closer.
Clara caught his sleeve. “Let the lawyer do the threatening.”
Evelyn smiled without warmth. “My client possesses the key, his late wife’s death certificate, and a credible belief that the box contains evidence of attempted murder and an ongoing threat to a minor. You may open it voluntarily, or I can request an emergency order and explain to regulators why your bank obstructed us.”
The chairman opened the box.
Before touching its contents, Evelyn photographed the unbroken bank seal and made the chairman state the box number, date, and names of everyone present. Clara understood the precaution when Dante found a second access stamp beneath the lid.
Someone had opened Box 317 eleven days after Sofia died.
“Who?” Ricardo asked.
The chairman checked his ledger. “The signature is yours.”
Ricardo examined it. “That is not my hand.”
The forged authorization had been approved by Malcolm Reed while he was still a private trust attorney. Reed had not merely discovered Sofia’s evidence through the custody case. He had known where she placed it for three years—and had left selected pieces behind.
Inside were a music box cylinder, a microSD card, a sealed letter for Leo, and a photograph of Sofia standing beside Judge Reed. On the back, Sofia had written: He knows where the money goes.
Dante inserted the card into an isolated laptop.
Three files appeared.
The first was a spreadsheet listing payments from Moretti shell companies to charities connected to Reed. The second contained audio from the birthday dinner.
Sofia’s voice filled the vault.
“If anything happens to me, Leo gets everything. Not Gabriel. Not Ricardo. Leo.”
Gabriel laughed in the background. “Children don’t control shares.”
“Trustees do,” Sofia said. “And I changed the trustee this morning.”
A chair scraped.
Ricardo’s recorded voice sounded furious. “You went behind my back.”
“Because you keep calling a cage protection.”
Then came a sharp impact and silence.
The recording ended.
Clara looked at Ricardo. He did not defend himself.
“What was the impact?” she asked.
“Her glass against the wall.”
“The same thing you told me last night.”
“Because it is what happened.”
Dante opened the third file.
Video appeared from a camera mounted inside Sofia’s car. Rain streaked the windshield. The date showed the night she died.
Sofia sat behind the wheel in a parking garage, speaking directly to the lens.
“Ricardo will believe Gabriel did this. Gabriel will believe Ricardo did it. That is what Reed wants.”
Clara leaned closer.
Sofia continued. “The stolen money is not the real leverage. The guardianship is. Whoever controls Leo controls the Moretti voting trust.”
Footsteps sounded outside the car.
Sofia turned toward the driver’s window.
The video jumped.
Ricardo appeared beside the car.
His face was pale with rage.
“Get out,” he ordered.
“You followed me?” Sofia demanded.
“Give me Leo’s trust documents.”
“No.”
Ricardo opened the door and reached inside. Sofia screamed. The camera shook violently, then the screen went black.
Clara backed away from him.
“You said her car went through a guardrail.”
“It did.”
“You never said you confronted her first.”
“I took the documents and left.”
“Why should I believe you?”
His expression changed—not anger, but the realization that he had lost something he did not know he possessed.
Trust.
The vault door slammed shut behind them.
The lights died.
A red emergency lamp came on above the boxes.
Dante drew his weapon. Evelyn reached for her phone, but there was no signal.
From the laptop speakers came Sofia’s voice, although the video had ended.
“If Ricardo is watching this,” the recording said, “ask him what he did during the missing seven minutes.”
Clara faced him across the red-lit vault.
Ricardo’s hand was already on his gun.
“I don’t remember seven minutes,” he said.
The laptop screen changed by itself.
A live video feed appeared.
Leo was asleep in the Moretti family room.
A man wearing black gloves stepped into the frame and placed a gun beside the child’s head.
