"The Mafia Boss’s Son Chose Me" Chapter 4 — The Woman Beside Him
The handwriting on Leo’s drawing belonged to Sofia Moretti.
Ricardo knew before Dante produced a sample from her old Christmas cards. The capital S curved backward like a ribbon; the final A ended with a sharp downward stroke.
Clara watched the blood drain from his face.
“This paper came from Leo’s art basket,” she said. “Could Sofia have written on it before she died?”
Mrs. Alvarez shook her head. “The basket was taken from sealed storage this morning.”
Dante examined the page beneath a lamp. “The ink is fresh.”
Ricardo’s grief hardened into command. “Test it. Check every camera again. Nobody leaves.”
Clara turned the drawing over. Beneath Sofia’s name, faint pressure marks crossed the paper.
She angled it toward the light.
“Someone wrote on a sheet above this one.”
Dante shaded the surface lightly with a pencil. Numbers appeared one by one.
4-19-15-6-9-1.
“Letters,” Clara said. “D-S-O-F-I-A. No. Wait.”
Ricardo took the pencil. “Sofia used simple substitution codes in college. Each number corresponds to a letter.”
He wrote beneath them.
D S O F I A
“The four may be a fourteen,” Clara said.
Dante adjusted the light. A narrow line became visible before the four.
14-19-15-6-9-1.
N S O F I A.
Mrs. Alvarez inhaled. “North Sofia.”
Ricardo was already moving.
He led them to Sofia’s suite in the north wing, rooms preserved exactly as she had left them. Her perfume still stood on the vanity. A cream sweater rested over a chair. Ricardo stopped at the threshold as if the space contained an invisible wall.
“You haven’t entered since she died,” Clara said.
“There was no reason.”
“There is now.”
They searched drawers, bookshelves, and the writing desk. Dante found nothing electronic. Clara noticed that one framed photograph hung slightly crooked.
Behind it was a narrow wall safe.
Ricardo entered Sofia’s birthday. The lock flashed red.
He tried Leo’s birthday. Red again.
“What did she love that you would never guess?” Clara asked.
His eyes moved around the room. “She said predictable passwords were an insult to intelligent thieves.”
“That sounds like a woman who left a clue.”
On the vanity sat a music box shaped like a carousel. Clara wound it. A slow lullaby filled the room.
Leo appeared in the doorway holding Mrs. Alvarez’s hand.
“Mommy song.”
He slipped free, crossed to the safe, and pressed four numbers.
The door clicked open.
Inside lay a brass key and an envelope addressed to Ricardo.
He opened it with unsteady hands.
If you found this, I failed to leave safely. Do not trust the court. Do not trust the family. Protect Leo from the man who smiles when you threaten him.
There was no signature.
Ricardo read the note twice.
“Gabriel smiles at funerals,” Dante said.
“So do half the men I know.”
The key carried the engraved number 317.
Evelyn identified it as a private safe-deposit box at Hudson Crown Bank. Access required either Sofia’s death certificate and a court order or proof that Ricardo was the designated co-owner.

Before they could decide their next move, Evelyn’s phone rang.
Her expression changed as she listened.
“Judge Reed has scheduled a charity gala tonight,” she said. “Gabriel will attend with three members of the family-services board.”
“Then I will attend,” Ricardo said.
“Not alone. Gabriel’s petition describes this estate as a mausoleum and you as an isolated widower raising Leo without maternal influence.”
Clara understood first. “No.”
Evelyn continued as if she had not spoken. “A stable romantic partner would weaken that argument.”
“I’m not pretending to be his girlfriend.”
Ricardo’s attention shifted to her. “Fiancée.”
“Absolutely not.”
“It would be more persuasive.”
“It would be a lie.”
“So is every sentence in Gabriel’s petition.”
Clara folded her arms. “Find another woman.”
“Leo trusts you,” Evelyn said. “The social worker documented it. Anyone else would look staged.”
“This is staged.”
Ricardo stepped closer. “Tonight gives us access to Reed, Gabriel, and the bank chairman. You may help us learn what Sofia hid.”
“And tomorrow Leo sees photographs calling me his future mother. What happens when my thirty days end?”
The question silenced the room.
Ricardo’s voice lowered. “I will not ask you to make promises to him.”
“Children hear promises adults never say.”
Leo tugged Clara’s sleeve. “You wear pretty dress?”
She looked down at him.
“That is emotional blackmail,” she told Ricardo.
“He inherited it.”
Clara agreed to one public appearance, no interviews, and no affection beyond what she initiated. Ricardo agreed too quickly.
Two hours later, she descended the staircase in a dark green gown Mrs. Alvarez found in Sofia’s unused wardrobe.
Ricardo waited below in a tuxedo.
He looked up and forgot to hide his reaction.
Clara touched the simple neckline. “Say it.”
“The dress should have been yours.”
The answer disarmed her more than a compliment.
He held out a velvet box. Inside was an emerald ring surrounded by diamonds.
“A prop?” she asked.
“A family piece.”
“That makes it worse.”
He slid it onto her finger. His thumb brushed her knuckle, and the contact sent an unwanted spark up her arm.
His eyes lifted to hers.
For one suspended second, neither moved.
Then Leo raced into the foyer wearing a tiny tuxedo and dinosaur sneakers.
“Clara princess!”
The gala occupied the ballroom of the Halcyon Hotel in Midtown. Cameras flashed the moment Ricardo’s car arrived.
He offered Clara his arm.
“They smell fear,” he murmured.
“So do children. You’re better with reporters.”
Inside, Gabriel Moretti approached with silver at his temples and warmth that never reached his eyes.
“Ricardo. What an unexpected development.”
His gaze moved to Clara’s ring.
“Clara Hayes,” Ricardo said. “My fiancée.”
Gabriel took her hand. “The waitress.”
“The woman who noticed Leo was suffering while his family discussed stock transfers,” Clara replied.
Gabriel smiled.
Sofia’s warning echoed in her mind.
Protect Leo from the man who smiles when you threaten him.

Judge Reed joined them. He congratulated Ricardo, asked intrusive questions about wedding dates, and watched Clara as if assessing testimony.
“Family can transform a man,” Reed said.
“Or expose him,” Clara replied.
Across the ballroom, Leo stood with Mrs. Alvarez and two guards. He waved when Clara looked over.
Then the lights went out.
Glass broke. Guests screamed.
Ricardo pulled Clara behind him as emergency lights flashed red. A shot struck the marble column beside them.
“Leo!” Clara shouted.
She ran before Ricardo could stop her.
The space where Leo had been was empty. Mrs. Alvarez lay on the floor, dazed but conscious. One guard fought a masked man near the service doors.
Clara saw dinosaur sneakers disappearing into the corridor.
She kicked off her heels and chased them.
The kidnapper carried Leo beneath one arm. Leo clawed and screamed.
Clara seized a champagne stand and shoved it into the man’s knees. He fell. Leo rolled across the carpet.
The attacker reached inside his coat.
Clara threw herself over the child.
A gunshot thundered.
The masked man collapsed.
Ricardo stood at the end of the corridor with a pistol extended. His face held no mercy.
He crossed the distance, lifted Leo with one arm, and pulled Clara against them with the other.
“Are you hurt?” he demanded.
“No.”
“Do not lie to me.”
“I’m not.”
His hand shook against the back of her neck.
Security flooded the corridor. Dante tore the mask from the wounded attacker.
“He works for Gabriel,” Ricardo said.
Dante searched the man’s pockets and removed a hotel key card, a burner phone, and a folded page.
The page bore Sofia’s handwriting.
Ricardo opened it.
Clara read over his shoulder.
The key opens Box 317. Inside is proof of who ordered my death. If Ricardo is reading this, tell him the killer was sitting at our table the night Leo turned two.
Ricardo went perfectly still.
At that birthday dinner, only four adults had been seated at the family table.
Sofia.
Ricardo.
Dante.
And Gabriel.
