"The Scar No One Was Meant to See" Chapter 7 — The Voice on the Recording
Chapter 7 — The Voice on the Recording
"I paid you to keep him off his feet until Friday," Elias's recorded voice said. "I didn't pay you to kill him."
Kessler answered beneath the house alarm. "Then you should have brought him back when the fever started."
In the ambulance entrance, Dominic closed his eyes. Elias still held the gun. He looked as though he had heard a stranger speaking from Claire's phone.
"It was supposed to wear off," he said.
The security officer kept her voice level. "Put the gun on the floor, Elias. Move away from it."
"I never wanted him dead."
"Then let the medical crew leave."
Claire did not press play again. The recording had done what she needed: it had made Elias answer aloud, in front of witnesses. She passed the phone to Rebecca and stepped back beside Dominic's stretcher.
Elias looked at his brother. "You were going to hand strangers everything Dad left us."
"I was going to tell them what we did with it," Dominic said.
"You couldn't even stand. I thought you'd finally have to listen."
"I did listen. For three weeks."
Elias's expression changed. His arm dropped a little. Marcus took one step, then stopped when the officer signaled him back. A second officer came in from the street, speaking calmly to Elias while the first kept the exit clear.
"You told me the fever was from the bullet wound," Dominic said. "You watched me try to stand at breakfast."
"Kessler said you'd improve after the device was removed. I told him to remove it."
"When?"
Elias did not answer.
"After Friday?" Dominic asked.
The hospital officer repeated her instruction. Claire saw Elias look at the stretcher, then at the gun, as if he had only just understood what he was holding in a place full of patients. She did not mistake his hesitation for remorse. She had heard him describe the plan in his own voice.
After a long moment, Elias set the gun on the floor and raised his hands. The officers moved in. One secured the weapon while the other led him away. His two contractors were held for questioning. Rebecca identified herself to the officers and told them Marcus had the original recording.
The paramedics began moving at once. Claire gave the lead medic the folder. Dominic reached for her hand before the stretcher crossed the threshold.
"Come with me."
"I can't make your brother disappear," she said.
"That's not what I asked."
Rebecca had arranged to follow the ambulance. Claire asked the medic if she could ride along as the sending nurse and provide the clinical handoff. He checked the transfer paperwork, then nodded.
At the regional medical center, a surgeon named Dr. Tessa Ward met them. She examined Dominic, compared both scans, and explained that infection near the spine required prompt treatment. The object visible on imaging appeared to be a small device placed during Kessler's procedure. Its precise function and relationship to the weakness would have to be established during surgery and by later examination.

"Can you get it out?" Dominic asked.
"That is our aim if removing it can be done safely," Ward said. "I won't promise your legs will recover. There may be injury we can't see clearly yet."
Dominic looked toward Claire. She did not contradict Ward or soften the answer.
While the team prepared him, Rebecca took a call from an investigator assigned to the case. She gave the detective the medical timeline, the clinic's changing documents, and the location of Marcus's original camera file. Claire wrote her own statement about the wound she found, what Dominic said, and the moment Elias blocked the transfer. She kept the statement limited to what she had witnessed.
Dominic signed the surgical consent after Ward reviewed it with him. Before they took him away, he asked Claire to tell Rebecca to release the company records that afternoon. Rebecca heard him herself.
Ward also asked what Dominic had been told when the first procedure took place. He remembered a discussion of his shoulder and signing a form before sedation. He had no memory of a second consent. Ward recorded his account without deciding whether the document was forged; that question belonged to investigators. Claire was relieved to see the facts separated so carefully.
"Even if the surgery goes well?" she asked.
"Especially then. I don't want another fever to be the only reason I tell the truth."
The operating room doors closed. Claire and Rebecca waited in a room with a broken coffee machine and a television nobody watched. Marcus delivered the camera's storage card to the detective, documented the transfer, and returned looking older than he had at the Varela house.
"Elias called me before the first ambulance," he said. "He told me to delay it. I said no, but I didn't report the call."
"Tell the detective," Claire said.
"I will."
Hours later, Ward came out. The team had treated an infected pocket of tissue and removed a small device. She did not speculate about its intended use. The object had been sent through the hospital's evidence process for examination, and samples had gone to the laboratory. Dominic was stable, though his recovery would depend on how much nerve function returned after the infection settled.
"Was there damage?" Rebecca asked.
"There was inflammation around the nerves," Ward said. "Some of it may ease with treatment. I won't predict the outcome today."
Rebecca thanked her and went outside to update the detective. Claire remained where she was. She could still see the narrow incision as it had looked under a penlight, a line nobody had thought to question because the patient was famous for being difficult. She had almost accepted the agency chart's description of him. One glance at his back had changed the night. It had not yet changed what she would be allowed to do with the rest of her life.
"He'll wake up?" Claire asked.
"We expect him to."
Relief reached her so suddenly she had to sit down.
When Dominic opened his eyes that evening, she was in the chair beside him. He tried to move his left foot. Nothing happened. His right toes shifted beneath the sheet.
"Don't measure the rest of your life tonight," Claire said.
He looked at her. "You sound like you practiced that."
"On myself."
Rebecca entered carrying a new message from the investigators. Kessler had asked for a lawyer. In return for discussing the device, he wanted protection from a separate inquiry into the old St. Alden contracts.
Claire stood. "He knows what happened there."
"Perhaps," Rebecca said. "But whatever he says now will come with a price."
