"The Scar No One Was Meant to See" Chapter 5 — The Consent Form
Chapter 5 — The Consent Form
"A payment to his company doesn't make him responsible for everything St. Alden did," Leah said.
"I know." Claire forwarded the invoice to Rebecca, preserving the email it came with. "But his name was on the contract, and he just sent someone to threaten me about my license. I want to know why."
Morning light reached the emergency department in pale strips. Dominic had received treatment for the infection, but his left leg remained weak. The spine team at the regional medical center had accepted him for urgent evaluation. Transfer would begin as soon as the crew and receiving bed were ready.
Kessler's clinic sent an amended operative note at seven. It described a procedure to relieve pressure after the shooting, a reason absent from the first note. Claire laid the two versions side by side for Rebecca.
"Can the clinic revise a note?" Rebecca asked.
"Doctors can correct records. The correction should have a date, an author, and an explanation. This one replaces the original text without telling us who changed it. The hospital should retain both copies."
Rebecca asked the records officer to do just that. Claire photographed neither hospital screen nor private patient chart this time; she let the hospital's formal process preserve them. She had learned when her own evidence mattered and when an independent custodian mattered more.
Elias called Dominic's phone three times. Dominic declined each call. On the fourth, Rebecca suggested that he let the voicemail record whatever his brother wanted to say.
"You don't have to take his calls," she said. "And I won't tell you what to say to him."
Dominic set the phone facedown. "He thinks I always choose the quickest way out."
"Have you?" Claire asked.
"Often."
He told her about the freight contracts. His father had built a legal trucking company alongside a network that moved goods for men who preferred cash and silence. When Dominic inherited control, he had kept the network running. Eventually he began closing routes, paying workers who wanted out, and collecting the old account books for investigators. Elias saw each closure as an attack on the family.
"You could have gone to the authorities six months ago," Claire said.
"I could have gone years ago."
He did not offer a reason that made the delay noble. Claire respected the absence of one more than she wanted to.
Rebecca entered with Marcus. A company security contractor had asked the hospital for Dominic's room number while claiming to be family. Marcus recognized the name as one of Elias's hires. The hospital had refused access.
"He knows we're moving Dominic," Marcus said. "I can put my people around the ambulance."
"No private convoy," Rebecca said. "Hospital security and the medical crew handle the transfer. Give the hospital the contractor's name."
Marcus looked displeased but complied. Claire noticed that Dominic watched him with surprise. Men in their world were accustomed to answering danger with more men. Here they had to trust a receptionist, a security desk, and a recorded visitor list.

The receiving surgeon called for the images. Leah put the phone on speaker with Dominic's permission. The surgeon said the swelling and fever warranted urgent assessment; he would decide on treatment after examining Dominic and reviewing the complete scans. He asked specifically for the operative note and any implant information.
"There is no implant listed," Leah said.
"Then ask the clinic what I'm looking at," he replied.
Rebecca contacted Kessler's office while Marcus called the clinic's records number from Dominic's original discharge paperwork. The receptionist said Kessler was unavailable. Ten minutes later, the office emailed a third document: an implant log containing a manufacturer code but no recorded lot number.
The lot number mattered because it could identify what had actually been placed inside Dominic and whether the object on the scan matched the clinic's account. Leah asked the records officer to request the original inventory log rather than accept another summary prepared that morning.
"Three versions in one night," Claire said.
"Each one answers the question we asked before it," Rebecca replied.
Dominic listened as they described the new page. "Did I agree to any of it?"
"Your signature was copied onto the later form," Claire said. "We're preserving the originals so an examiner can verify that."
He looked at his useless left foot. "He told me to be patient. Elias sat beside my bed and said I was getting angry because I couldn't accept being weak."
Claire lowered herself into the chair. "You were getting angry because something was wrong. The doctors are taking that seriously now."
"You believed me before you had the scan."
"I believed you were in pain. That was enough to investigate."
He studied her. "Who believed you at St. Alden?"
"Leah. A records clerk. Three patients' families." Claire glanced toward Rebecca. "It wasn't enough then. It may be now."
Rebecca's phone rang. Her investigator had located a bank transfer to Briar Clinical Partners from a Varela Freight subcontractor. It was dated two days before Dominic's unexplained procedure. The amount was substantial, but the records available so far did not show who approved it.
"Don't conclude Elias paid for surgery until we have authorization," Rebecca warned.
"Then obtain it," Dominic said.
Marcus shifted beside the door. "If that payment came from the subcontractor account I think it did, Elias controls the approvals. He told me those transfers paid for vehicle storage."
"Did you see an invoice?" Rebecca asked.
"No. He said I wasn't paid to read them."
"Then write down what he told you and when," Claire said. "The records will tell us whether it matters."
She met his eyes. "That means turning over company records that may expose you."
"I heard you the first time."
Rebecca prepared the disclosure instructions. Dominic reviewed each page while the attending again documented that he understood the choice. He signed only after Rebecca read back the specific accounts to be released.
As she carried the documents out, the ambulance dispatcher called the nurses' station. Someone had phoned the transfer company claiming Dominic had died and the trip was canceled. The caller had used the correct patient number.
"He's alive," Claire said to the dispatcher. "Confirm directly with the hospital charge nurse. Then tell her who made that call."
