"The Scar No One Was Meant to See" Chapter 3 — The Wrong Injury
Chapter 3 — The Wrong Injury
Elias did not answer. Instead, he told Kessler to check Dominic's temperature.
Claire took the folder from the bed before either man could move it. "The ambulance is coming. This goes with him."
"It's a private clinic document," Elias said.
"Then its owner can send a certified copy later. Right now the receiving doctors need to know what happened."
She placed the folder beside the chart. Dominic nodded once. It was a slight gesture, but Marcus saw it and stationed himself at the bedroom door.
Kessler's thermometer showed another rise. Claire checked Dominic's breathing and urged him to stay awake. He could still feel pressure against the sole of his right foot. On the left, his answer came after a long pause.
"Was it like this yesterday?" she asked.
"I could stand with help," he said.
Kessler's face changed. Claire turned toward him. "Did your clinic know he was losing strength?"
"His nurse reported it."
"And what did you tell her?"
"That recovery can be unpredictable."
"After shoulder surgery?"
He shut his case. "I'm not discussing his care with you."
"You are while I'm responsible for him."
Elias took out his phone and walked toward the window. Marcus's own phone vibrated a moment later. He glanced at it, then slipped it into his pocket without answering.
"What's happening downstairs?" Claire asked.
"Elias has told the gate staff to hold the ambulance until he speaks to the crew."
Claire took her personal phone from her pocket. "Then I'll tell dispatch the patient is being prevented from leaving."
"You'd bring police into his house?" Elias asked.
"I'd get a critically ill man to a hospital. You can decide how much trouble you want to add to that."
Dominic watched his brother from the bed. "Let them through."
Elias said nothing.
Claire called dispatch, gave the address, and described the delay at the gate. Marcus sent his own guard a direct instruction to admit the crew. Elias paced to the other side of the room, speaking too quietly for Claire to hear.
Dominic caught the edge of her sleeve. "The books," he said.
"What books?"
"Company accounts. I was giving them to an outside lawyer on Friday."
"Save your strength."
"Elias knew."
"Then tell the lawyer when you're safe."
"If he lets me get there."
Claire looked toward Marcus. He had heard. His jaw tightened, but he kept his place at the door.
The paramedics arrived eight minutes later with a stretcher. Claire gave a concise handoff: the fever, the change in leg strength, the undocumented incision, the photographs, and the discrepancy in the consent form. She also pointed out the vial she had set aside. A paramedic checked Dominic and called ahead to the hospital.
Elias stood in the doorway. "Kessler can treat him here."
"Dominic has agreed to go," Claire said.
"He isn't capable of agreeing."

"He answered the crew's questions," the paramedic said. "We're taking him."
For a moment Claire thought Elias might physically block the stretcher. Marcus opened the door wider, and Dominic was wheeled past his brother. Claire went with them, carrying the chart and folder.
At the hospital, Leah met them outside the emergency department. She had arranged for an independent team to receive Dominic and compare the clinic records with current imaging. Claire gave her the paper folder, keeping a photograph of every page and noting the handoff time.
"You're shaking," Leah said when the doors closed behind the stretcher.
"I noticed."
"You've done everything you can for tonight."
"The clinic might send records that say he consented."
"Then we keep both versions."
Claire looked through the glass at the doctors surrounding Dominic. She could identify each movement from years of doing the same work. She had expected that sight to hurt. Instead, she felt a familiar pull toward the problem they were trying to solve.
Marcus joined them. Elias had remained at the house, he said, but Kessler was on his way. Marcus had also called Dominic's attorney, Rebecca Hale, using the number Dominic kept in his phone.
"I didn't tell her about the books," Marcus said. "Dominic should decide that."
"Tell her where he is," Claire replied. "And ask her to keep a copy of anything the clinic sends."
The first scan took longer than Claire could bear. When the attending physician finally invited her and Leah to look, he pointed to inflammation around the lower spine. Near the affected area lay a small object that did not appear in the clinic's report.
"We need the operative note," he said. "It could change what we do next."
Claire showed him the photograph of the consent form. "The brother brought this. Dominic says he wasn't at the clinic on the date beside his signature."
The physician sent for the hospital's records officer and returned to his patient. Leah helped Claire document the sequence: who had supplied each page, when Claire had photographed it, and what Dominic had said while he was able to answer. Claire called Rebecca, who confirmed that she had received the photographs from Marcus.
"Is he going to survive?" Rebecca asked.
"He's with the right team now," Claire said. "I can't promise more."
An hour later, the clinic sent its electronic records. Leah brought the packet to a table outside the treatment room. The procedure note described an incision near the lower spine. The attached consent form matched the one Elias had carried, including the same signature and date.
"At least they've admitted the surgery happened," Leah said.
Claire read the time stamp beneath the signature. Then she opened the hospital's intake history from the night Dominic had first been injured. Marcus had mentioned that Dominic left the clinic before dawn; the intake history included a photograph taken by a visiting physical therapist at his house the next morning. Dominic sat in a wheelchair beneath the kitchen clock. The date was visible in the therapist's file information.
The consent had supposedly been signed later that same afternoon at the clinic. Dominic's calendar, which Rebecca had sent Marcus, showed a home consultation with two witnesses during that hour.
"A calendar isn't proof," Claire said. "But those people can tell us where he was."
Leah enlarged the signature. "What else do you see?"
Claire compared the two forms in the packet. The signature on the shoulder consent and the one on the spinal consent had the same tiny break in the ink at the end of Dominic's surname. She placed the images side by side and magnified them until Leah leaned closer.
"They used the same image," Leah said.
Claire saved both original files and sent them to Rebecca with their document identifiers. Someone had copied a signature from an earlier consent onto a later form. It still did not tell them who ordered the operation, or what the object near Dominic's spine was supposed to do.
Then Rebecca called back.
"Claire," she said, "Dominic instructed me to receive his company accounts on Friday. Elias canceled the appointment this morning. He told my office Dominic wouldn't be making decisions for a very long time."
Claire looked through the glass. Dominic lay motionless beneath a bank of clinical lights.
"How could Elias know that?" she asked.
