"The Girl They Taught to Be Unwanted" Chapter 10: Stay
Chapter 10: Stay
The staff note did not identify the visitor. Tessa asked the residential house for the old appointment calendar, and Grant asked Iris to retrieve every record showing where he had been that day. It was another day of assembling ordinary facts while Maisie waited for adults to decide where she would live.
The appointment calendar listed a meeting at Diane's office under Grant's name. No identification had been recorded at the house. The retired supervisor remembered a woman arriving with a folder, saying she represented Whitaker Logistics and had been sent to discuss the child's financial arrangements. She was directed to Diane and never saw Maisie. The supervisor had assumed the sign-in name was the person the woman represented.
"So the woman didn't even pretend to be me," Grant said.
"The log made it look as though you came," Tessa replied. "That's what we can establish. We still need to know who wrote your name and why the file turned that meeting into a visit from you."
The county attorney interviewed Diane's former administrative assistant, Lila Price. Lila remembered preparing a packet for a meeting about Maisie's trust, but could not recall the visitor's name. She had been told to use Grant's name in the appointment calendar because the inquiry concerned his family. She also remembered copying an old signature from a public business filing onto a sample form at Diane's instruction. Diane had said the form was for an internal file review. Lila did not know how it reached the official record.
Tessa told Grant what Lila was willing to state in writing. "Her account matters. It isn't an admission that she knowingly forged a refusal, and it doesn't answer every question."
"It answers whether I walked into that building and turned my back on Maisie."
"Yes."
Grant had imagined that answer would bring relief. It brought a second, less comfortable thought: he had turned his back on Anna without anyone's help. He could prove one document false without making himself innocent of everything that came before it.
Two evenings before the review, Maisie came into his office carrying the postcard. She had asked the advocate for its return after copies were made. Grant moved a stack of invoices aside so she could put it down.
"Mom wrote that you weren't there," she said. "But you were in the building, weren't you?"
"I was."
"Why didn't you come downstairs?"
He remembered the security guard speaking into the office phone. Anna's name on the message slip. His own instruction: tell her I'm busy.
"Because I was angry with her," he said. "I knew she had come. I decided not to see her. I didn't know she brought you, but I should have gone downstairs anyway."
Maisie picked at the edge of the postcard. "If you'd come, she could've shown you me."
"Yes."
"And then maybe I'd never have lived with Diane."

"Maybe. I don't know what would have happened. You can be angry with me for what I did."
"I am."
Grant nodded. She took the postcard and went to her room. He did not follow her or ask her to make his confession easier.
The following morning Maisie asked Ms. Alvarez to explain who would be in the review room. She drew four rectangles on a piece of paper and wrote names inside them. Grant was surprised to find his name outside the rectangle marked CHILD SPEAKS.
"I asked for you to wait in the hall," Maisie told him. "I don't want to watch you get sad when I say I'm angry."
"That's a good reason," he said.
"If I say I want to stay, will they make me promise not to be angry?"
"No one should ask you for that. Tell the advocate if anyone does."
Maisie folded the paper and put it in her pocket. Grant asked Tessa to confirm the arrangements with the advocate, then made sure he had no meeting scheduled afterward. Whatever the decision, he would be there to take Maisie home or help her understand the next step.
At the review, Diane's attorney argued that Grant's history with Anna and his short time caring for Maisie warranted caution. Tessa did not dispute that the placement needed oversight. She presented school attendance, Ms. Alvarez's visits, Grant's revised pickup arrangements, and Maisie's own account of the house. Then she addressed the refusal form and visitor log, placing Lila's statement beside the original records.
Diane disputed Lila's recollection. She said her office had handled many family inquiries and that she had never authorized anyone to file a false refusal. The county attorney said the record alteration and trust expenses remained under separate investigation. The placement decision did not require a finding of criminal responsibility.
Maisie had asked to speak without either Grant or Diane in the room. Grant waited in the hallway, looking at a vending machine stocked with the crackers she used to keep in her pocket. He wanted to know what she said. He wanted more strongly for her to be able to say it without watching his face.
The advocate came out first. "She's finished."
"Did she feel heard?" Grant asked.
"Ask her later."
When they returned, the hearing officer summarized Maisie's wish: she wanted to remain with Grant, continue seeing Ms. Alvarez, and retain access to Anna's belongings. She also wanted the adults to stop describing her anger as a reason she could not live with family.
The officer found that continued kinship placement served her interests while the county completed its assessment. Diane would have no role in supervising Maisie's care. The prior descriptions of aggression would be flagged for review against the original notes. A later proceeding would consider longer-term custody. The money inquiry would continue independently.
Grant's hands were cold. Maisie had not been promised forever by a hearing officer, but nobody was taking her suitcase to a different house that night.
Outside, she walked beside him without touching his hand.
"Are you still mad?" he asked.
"Yes."
"All right."
At the car, she stopped. "I told them I wanted to stay. I also told them you should have come downstairs."
"Both are true."
"Will you still come back tomorrow if I'm mad again?"
Grant unlocked the car and set her backpack on the seat. "I'll pick you up from school tomorrow. Iris has the backup plan. At home we can be mad, talk, or eat dinner quietly. You'll still have your room."
Maisie got in. She didn't smile. But when they reached the house, she carried the postcard upstairs and put it on her dresser instead of inside the suitcase.
