"The Girl They Taught to Be Unwanted" Chapter 7: Her Mother's Copy
Chapter 7: Her Mother's Copy
"It said, 'If anyone says no suitable family member is available, ask them to call Grant Whitaker again,'" Maisie told the hearing officer. "Mom wrote his number underneath."
The officer asked the child advocate to sit closer to Maisie. Tessa turned the refusal form over so its signature faced down. Grant had spent the last hour fighting to be heard. Now he held still and let Maisie finish.
"When did you read the letter?" the advocate asked.
"At Diane's house. I was six. Mom's box was in the closet. I could read most of it then." Maisie rubbed her thumb against a rough edge of the table. "It said if he didn't answer, try his company. I asked Diane if we could call. She said he already said no. Then the box was gone."
Diane shifted in her chair. "Maisie, you were very upset that week. You may be remembering two different papers."
"I remember the flowers on the box," Maisie said. "One had a crooked blue petal because I painted it."
"No one is asking you to prove it here," the advocate said.
The hearing officer directed that Maisie's account be recorded accurately and asked Diane's counsel to arrange preservation of any property belonging to Anna or Maisie in Diane's possession. Diane said she no longer had the box. She thought it might have been transferred with Maisie's belongings during a placement change.
Tessa held up the inventory. "Your signature appears beside 'property claimed by guardian.' Can you identify the guardian who claimed it?"
"That notation wasn't mine."
"The signature is?"
"I signed for a group of effects. I didn't personally inventory every item."
The officer stopped them before the exchange became a trial of the box. The limited meeting would not settle custody or determine who had altered a document. But Maisie's statement gave the property request a purpose no one could dismiss as Grant's curiosity.
Outside, Grant found Maisie sitting beside Ms. Alvarez. He crouched far enough away to give her a choice about speaking.
"You told them what you remembered," he said. "That took courage."
"Diane said I make up stories."
"You described something we can look for. Adults have to do that part."
Maisie watched a cleaning cart pass. "Are you mad I read Mom's letter when I wasn't supposed to?"
"It was your mom's letter. I'm glad you told us."
"She might've written other things about you."
"She probably did. We were both angry."
"You don't want the box because you think she liked you?"
Grant took a moment. "I want you to have what she left you. If there's something in it that hurts my feelings, it's still yours."
Maisie regarded him with cautious interest, as though that answer was harder to counterfeit than kindness.
Over the next four days, Tessa traced the box through a storage receipt obtained from a former placement agency. It had not left with Maisie's other belongings. The receipt showed Diane had paid to keep one carton in a small storage unit under her office account. Its inventory number matched Anna's estate list. Tessa gave the information to the county attorney, who arranged to secure the carton pending review.

Grant was asked not to attend when it was opened. He waited at work and pretended to examine a delivery schedule while his phone lay faceup beside his keyboard.
The carton contained the flower box. Inside were old photographs, a pair of tiny rain boots, and an envelope labeled FOR MAISIE, WHEN YOU CAN READ THIS YOURSELF. Anna's letter was handwritten on two folded sheets. Tessa called after the child advocate had helped Maisie decide which parts she wanted shared.
"Anna wrote that Grant was her brother and that she wanted him contacted if she couldn't care for Maisie," Tessa said. "She included both his old number and the company's main line. She also wrote that they were not speaking, but she believed he would help if he knew about his niece."
Grant leaned against the doorframe. "And the sentence Maisie remembered?"
"It's there. Maisie paraphrased it, but she remembered its meaning."
"Does the letter make me her guardian?"
"No. It establishes Anna's wish and a serious inconsistency with the claim that you couldn't be reached. The assessment still matters. So does Maisie's view."
Grant asked whether Maisie could keep the letter. Tessa said the original would be preserved for now; Maisie would receive a copy immediately. He did not ask to read what Anna had written about their fight. He could wait until Maisie wanted to share it.
Maisie asked to see the postcard Anna had kept with the letter. It was a picture of a bridge downtown, with Anna's note on the back about the day they first walked across it together. The advocate arranged a copy for Maisie. Grant recognized the bridge but didn't say he had passed it every week for years. She was entitled to remember her mother without his regret taking up all the space.
Later, Tessa showed Grant a draft response to Diane's statement. She had written only that the original keepsake box was recovered from storage arranged through Diane's office. Grant wanted a stronger sentence. Tessa pointed out that no one had established who put it there or why. They could prove the box existed and had been inaccessible to Maisie. That was enough to justify the next inquiry.
Grant signed his declaration disputing the refusal form and the alleged visit. For the first time he added a separate statement about the letters he'd returned. He wrote plainly that Anna had tried to contact him, that he had chosen not to open her envelopes, and that the failure was his. Tessa asked whether he understood Diane might quote it. He did. He signed anyway.
The initial kinship assessment followed. A county worker visited his house, inspected the bedroom he'd left mostly empty, and asked how he would get Maisie to school when a truck missed its morning route. Grant showed her the revised schedule his operations director had approved. Iris would cover his early calls on school days; a screened caregiver could help if he traveled. He agreed to pause overnight travel during the assessment period.
Maisie visited the house with Ms. Alvarez. She tested the bedroom door, looked at the window, and asked if Captain could sleep on the floor.
"Captain can choose," Grant said.
"He chooses the bed."
"Then we'd better respect his decision."
Afterward Ms. Alvarez asked Maisie privately what she thought. Grant washed three already clean glasses so he would not hover outside the room.
A week later, the county approved a trial kinship placement while the disputed records and financial questions remained open. The decision named a review date thirty days away. Grant read every condition twice. He called Maisie only after Ms. Alvarez confirmed she'd been told.
"Do I have to bring the box?" she asked.
"Only if you want it there."
"What if I want to look at it and don't want you to?"
"Then I'll help you find a safe place for it and leave it closed."
There was a pause. "I want the room with the window."
"It's yours for the trial," Grant said. "And I'll keep working on what happens after."
"Thirty days," Maisie replied. She had already memorized the number.
