"The Girl They Taught to Be Unwanted" Chapter 6: The Name on the Form
Chapter 6: The Name on the Form
Grant reached for his phone. Tessa covered the sign-in sheet with her hand.
"Who are you calling?"
"Diane."
"Then you're about to tell her exactly which record to explain away."
He set the phone down. "Somebody used my name to visit Maisie."
"Somebody signed your name. We don't yet know whether they entered the building or who they were. Mara is asking her former supervisor to preserve any visitor records that remain."
Grant walked to the window. His anger wanted a face. The records kept giving him paper.
"What did Maisie hear?"
"Mara doesn't know. That's why Ms. Alvarez needs to handle any conversation with her about it."
Tessa prepared a supplemental filing disputing both the refusal and the visit. Grant provided his passport entry stamps, travel itinerary, and the ordinary work emails he'd sent from abroad that day. None proved who had written the name. Together they made his presence at the residential house implausible.
The first review meeting was set for the following Tuesday. It would address contact and interim placement while the disputed records were investigated. Tessa warned Grant that a favorable decision would not mean taking Maisie home that afternoon.
"I understand."
"You understand the words. I'm asking whether you'll respect the result if it takes longer."
"I'll come back the next day I'm allowed."
On Friday he met Ms. Alvarez at the center without Maisie present. She asked what his house looked like, who would care for Maisie when he worked, and how he handled a child refusing to speak to him.
"I just had practice," he said. "I asked to come back."
"And if she tells you she wants to stay where she is?"
Grant had imagined her living in his house too many times. "I'd ask that someone independent hear her reasons. Then I'd listen."
Ms. Alvarez wrote that down. "What did your sister want for her?"
"I don't know enough about Anna's last years to speak for her. I do know she told Maisie she had family."
On Monday, Tessa obtained a copy of Anna's old email backup through a process arranged with the estate's representative. It held photographs of Maisie in a yellow raincoat, school notices from her preschool, and drafts of letters to Grant. Some were never sent. One ended halfway through a sentence.
Grant did not ask Tessa to read them to him. He wanted to, and he was frightened of what Anna might have written. Tessa said she would identify what was relevant and preserve the originals.
Then the trust records gave them a clearer fact. A billed tutoring service denied receiving payment for two sessions charged to Maisie's account. Its owner supplied attendance logs. On one of those afternoons Maisie had been at a residential facility across town.
"Can we use it Tuesday?" Grant asked.
"We can raise the discrepancy and request a broader accounting. It won't determine placement by itself."

"Nothing determines anything by itself."
"That's usually how evidence works."
At the review meeting Diane sat opposite them in a charcoal jacket. Ms. Alvarez was present, as was the assigned county attorney. A hearing officer explained the limited decisions under review. Grant could see the door to the waiting area from his seat. Maisie had been offered the choice of attending part of the meeting with a child advocate; Grant did not know what she had chosen.
Before the meeting began, Grant had seen Maisie through the glass wall of the waiting area. She was sitting with the advocate, drawing on a scrap of paper. Diane had approached her, then stopped when the advocate shook her head. Grant stayed where he was. He wanted Maisie to know he'd come, but he would not turn the waiting room into a contest over which adult could reach her first.
The county attorney outlined the outstanding inquiries: the original refusal form, the claimed visit, and an accounting of expenditures. The hearing officer repeated that the day's decision concerned contact while those inquiries proceeded. Grant wrote the scope at the top of his notes. It helped him keep his attention on what he could actually ask for today.
Diane spoke first. She described years of work with a child who struggled to trust, then cast Grant's sudden arrival as a disruption. She did not say he should never see Maisie. She said visits should remain limited while professionals assessed the risk of disappointment.
"He didn't respond when her mother tried to reach him," she said. "I worry that guilt is driving a temporary enthusiasm. Maisie cannot survive another temporary enthusiasm."
Grant wanted to deny the accusation. He could not deny the first sentence.
"I returned Anna's letters," he said when given his turn. "I did that. I didn't know Maisie existed because I chose not to read them. But I didn't sign a refusal of her care, and I didn't visit her residential house three years ago. I'm asking for those records to be examined and for Maisie to be heard without anyone deciding for her what she feels."
Diane tilted her head. "A child repeating a story doesn't make it accurate."
Tessa submitted the travel records and the original lamp incident note. Then she presented the discrepancies in the tutoring invoices, carefully separating what the documents showed from what still needed investigation.
The hearing officer asked Diane whether she could identify the source of Grant's signed refusal. Diane said it had come through the routine placement process and that she had not personally collected his signature.
"Then you won't object to obtaining the original?" Tessa asked.
"Of course not."
She answered smoothly. But she reached for her water after speaking.
The hearing officer granted continued visits, directed preservation of the disputed records, and asked for a more complete review before any placement decision. It was a narrow result. Grant had worked for it, yet Maisie would still sleep somewhere else tonight.
As the room began to empty, the child advocate appeared at the doorway with Maisie. She had chosen to speak only after the adults finished. The officer invited her to sit. Diane's face softened into a practiced expression.
"You don't have to discuss anything you don't want to," the advocate told her.
Maisie nodded. She looked at the paper refusal on the table, which Tessa had left visible among the exhibits.
"What does that one say?" she asked.
Tessa explained, in plain words, that someone had written Grant did not want to care for her.
"Can I see the sentence at the bottom?"
The advocate moved the paper closer. Maisie traced the printed line above the signature. Her finger stopped on the words NO SUITABLE FAMILY MEMBER AVAILABLE.
"That's not how Mom wrote it," she said.
No one moved.
"Where did you see your mother write about this?" the hearing officer asked.
Maisie looked first at Diane, then at Grant. Her hands were shaking, but she did not pull them from the table.
"In the flower box. Mom wrote what to do if she couldn't come home." She pressed her finger against the line again. "I read it before Diane took the box. That sentence was in Mom's letter. But somebody cut off the first half."
Tessa leaned forward. "Maisie, what did the first half say?"
Maisie lifted her eyes from the paper.
"It said there was one person they weren't allowed to call unavailable."
