"The Girl They Taught to Be Unwanted" Chapter 5: What the Money Bought
Chapter 5: What the Money Bought
"Tell me exactly what Diane controlled," Grant said.
Tessa stood before a whiteboard covered with dates. "Maisie's housing arrangements for several years, access to her mother's belongings, and requests for certain trust disbursements. That doesn't establish misuse on its own."
"Who approved the disbursements?"
"An independent trustee received invoices and paid expenses under the trust terms. We need the underlying invoices and proof of who benefited."
Anna had never mentioned a trust to Grant. Their mother had established an education and support fund years before Maisie was born, naming future grandchildren as possible beneficiaries. A trustee administered it separately from Whitaker Logistics. When Anna died, Maisie became its only eligible beneficiary.
Grant read the statement Tessa had obtained with the trustee's cooperation. It showed charges for tutoring, transportation, clothing, and counseling. On paper Maisie had been generously provided for. Grant remembered her coat with the repaired zipper.
"I want copies of every invoice."
"We have a formal request pending. I'm also asking the trustee to preserve the records."
"Could I call them?"
"You can. They won't give you confidential records simply because you're wealthy and related. Let me handle the request."
Grant uncapped a marker. "Then what can I do?"
Tessa gave him a list of services the invoices claimed Maisie had received. "Find out what you can from public business records. No contact with Maisie's former caregivers without talking to me first. Their accounts need to be theirs, not yours."
Grant handed the list to his company's records manager, Iris, with a narrow instruction: identify whether the listed providers still existed, using public sources. By lunch Iris found that a tutoring service had dissolved two years before its most recent invoice. A transport company used a mailing address also listed for an automotive leasing office.
"Don't build a case out of an address," she warned.
"I won't. Send the records to Tessa."
He was learning to value the people willing to stop him.
At the next visit, Maisie told him she had once gone to a tutor with yellow curtains and a fish tank. Grant had no way of knowing whether that matched the bills, so he did not question her further. They spent most of their hour making paper bridges strong enough to hold Captain.
When the bridge collapsed, Maisie said, "You can tell me if it was stupid."
"It held a rabbit for ten seconds. That's better than my first warehouse roof."
"Your roof fell?"
"A gutter did. Rain went into forty boxes of socks."
"Were you fired?"
"I owned the warehouse, so I had to fix it."
She considered that. "Diane said if I broke her rules, I couldn't stay."
Grant put down a strip of tape. He had promised himself he would not mine their visits for evidence. He could still tell Ms. Alvarez afterward that Maisie had brought it up.

"Rules are supposed to help people live together," he said. "They shouldn't make you afraid of losing your bed."
"That's what you think."
"Yes."
"I don't know if I do."
"You have time to decide."
Two days later, Tessa arranged a recorded conversation with a former residential worker, Mara Bell. Grant was not present. Tessa called afterward and told him what Mara had agreed could be shared.
Mara had witnessed Maisie hide food after a weekend at Diane's house. Maisie had not struck anyone. Mara had written that in her shift notes, then discovered that a placement summary described a dangerous confrontation over food. She had complained to her supervisor at the time. She still had a copy of her original note and an email acknowledging receipt of her complaint.
"Will she testify?" Grant asked.
"She's willing to speak with the case coordinator first. That's useful without putting her through a hearing unnecessarily."
"What made her keep it?"
"She said Maisie was the first child she'd seen apologize to a vending machine after it failed to dispense a snack. She didn't want the file's version of that girl to be the only one left."
Grant went quiet.
Tessa continued. "Mara also remembers Maisie asking whether a man named Grant had called. She didn't know why Maisie expected you."
"Because Anna told her about me."
"Perhaps. Ask Maisie about her memories only when she's ready."
Iris found one more useful detail: the dissolved tutoring company had belonged to a retired teacher whose name appeared on the invoices. Tessa contacted the teacher directly, with a clear explanation of the inquiry. The teacher said she had tutored Maisie briefly years ago, but had never authorized anyone to bill under her business name afterward. She agreed to check her old records before putting anything in writing.
Grant wanted to tell Maisie they were uncovering the truth. Tessa reminded him that they had uncovered questions and that Maisie was already living under the weight of adult conclusions. At their next visit, he asked what she wanted to do with their hour. She chose a card game, beat him again, and corrected him when he called her horse Captain's pet. Captain, she informed him, belonged to no one.
At home Grant cleared the guest room of furniture left there because nobody used it. He stopped before buying anything. He did not yet have permission to offer Maisie a home, and a room chosen entirely by him would tell her more about his taste than hers.
He wrote to Ms. Alvarez instead, asking what a kinship assessment would require if Maisie wished to explore that option. She sent an outline of interviews, home visits, background checks, and the child's views. He read it, then scheduled the first steps Tessa said he could take.
The next morning the trustee's first invoice packet arrived. One charge for therapeutic transportation included a vehicle registration number. Tessa checked it against the supporting paperwork; the vehicle was leased by a company Diane controlled. It was a lead, not yet proof of theft.
At four, Grant was reviewing the packet with Tessa when Mara's follow-up email arrived. Attached was a scan of a sign-in sheet from the residential house. A visitor had asked about Maisie three years earlier and been turned away after staff checked her file.
The visitor had written his name in block capitals: GRANT WHITAKER.
Grant stared at the page. On that date, he had been overseas for work.
Someone had come looking for Maisie using his name.
