"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 11: Friday, Without a Board
Chapter 11: Friday, Without a Board
The box contained seventeen registers, a stack of transportation invoices and a smaller envelope bearing Mara's grandfather's name.
The independent record keeper photographed the seal before opening it. Luca's counsel identified the company registers. Mara's lawyer reviewed the envelope with her, then documented it alongside the other contents. Nobody took a paper out of the room until every page had been counted and assigned to its owner or held for review.
Her grandfather had written a short note:
Antonio asked me to keep these because figures can be changed in an office. A second copy gives an honest person somewhere to begin.
Mara read it twice. He had not hidden a fortune or a prophecy. He had kept the kind of careful record she had watched him keep all her life.
The registers showed the dormant vendors' original accounts and the date each had been closed. The recent invoices used those names after closure, with approvals routed through Adrian's office. The specialist could now compare the physical registers, Evan's original transfer receipt and the current account data without relying on any single copy. Her report identified a pattern of diverted payments and the people with access to authorize them. It did not ask Mara to decide guilt from a chess table.
Investigators took the findings and interviewed the people involved. Adrian was charged over the false invoices and altered records. Rourke's role in storing the box and sending the lease email was examined separately; the story did not end with an instant verdict on either man. Luca's company pursued recovery of the diverted money. Some funds were traced, while the final amount would depend on that process.
Evan was cleared of the company's accusation. He gave his account to investigators with his lawyer present and declined Luca's offer to return to Moretti Freight.
"You did believe me in the end," he told Luca. "I needed that at the beginning."
Luca accepted it. "I should have looked past Adrian sooner."
Evan sent Mara a note thanking her for finding the manual. She wrote back that she hoped his next job had fewer secret books and better accounting. He replied with a chess puzzle she couldn't solve until after closing.
Rourke renewed Second Story's lease for a limited term on written conditions negotiated by Mara's lawyer. Mara continued to look at other spaces. Her decision to stay that year was based on the numbers, not on a promise that Rourke had become generous.
The renewal came only after Mara rejected a clause that would have let the landlord end the lease for vaguely defined damage to the building's reputation. Her lawyer sent back language tied to actual property issues. Rourke signed the narrower version. Mara kept the alternative storefront contact in her desk drawer. Having somewhere else she could go changed the way she felt each time she unlocked Second Story's door.

She also recovered the chess manual from the evidence review when it was released to her. Mrs. Alvarez repaired its endpaper, leaving the old pocket visible beneath a protective sheet. Mara placed the book on a shelf behind the counter. When someone asked about it, she talked about her grandfather's habit of saving every receipt. She did not turn Evan's months in hiding into an attraction for customers.
By winter, the Neighborhood Chess League had seventy paying members across three venues. It still required work: scheduling volunteers, chasing missing clocks, buying enough hot drinks and reminding Walter that beginners did not need a lecture after every lost queen. The bookshop's monthly sales improved as players stayed to browse. Mara hired a part time bookseller for the busiest evenings and paid June's bakery for every voucher redeemed.
On the first night she could pay the distributor's overdue balance in full, Mara printed the receipt and sat with it for a minute. June caught her staring. "Are you framing that?"
"Maybe."
"Frame the membership board. That looks better."
Mara slipped the receipt into her ledger instead. There would be other bills next month. She liked knowing the store could meet them through something she had built with the neighborhood. When she told Luca, he didn't offer a way to grow faster. He said, "You made it work," and she let herself believe him.
Luca came on Thursdays, though not always to play Mara. Sometimes a teenager challenged him first. Sometimes he helped Walter arrange tables and found that Walter enjoyed giving him orders. Tomas had discovered the history section and no longer pretended to browse it. June sold him cinnamon coffee at full price.
Mara and Luca learned each other in hours the chessboard had never contained. He asked before arriving at her apartment. She told him when she needed an evening alone. They disagreed about late dinners and the best way to organize a kitchen cabinet. Once, when he started to offer advice about a supplier without being asked, he stopped and said, "Would you like an opinion?"
"Yes," she said, and gave him the invoice to read.
It was an ordinary exchange. That was why she remembered it.
One Thursday in February, rain tapped against the bookstore windows. The last league players left just after nine. Mara finished the cash count while Luca set up their old wooden board. The chalkboard had been moved to a wall near the counter. Their score was almost even now, but nobody had updated it in two weeks.
"You're behind on your paperwork," Luca said.
"The league has more pressing records than your victories."
"I had one last Thursday."
"Walter says you took back a move."
"Walter says many things."
Mara sat opposite him. He opened cautiously. She advanced a pawn and watched him consider it. On the first night they had met, he had been looking for an absent accountant and an answer he thought he could obtain without asking her anything. She had thought he was merely an arrogant stranger who needed to lose in public.
Both of them had been wrong about what the other could do.
"You've been thinking about that bishop for two minutes," she said.
"I've been thinking about Friday."
"What about it?"
"You said you might close early."
"I did."
She took an envelope from beside the register and laid it at the edge of the board. Inside was a reservation for a small restaurant near the river, table for two. She had booked it herself. No tournament, no investigation, no reason for either of them to be in the same room except that she wanted one.
Luca read the card, then looked up. "Mara."
"You have Thursday," she said. "If you'd like, you can have Friday too."
"I'd like that."
He reached across the table, palm open. She took his hand. He did not draw her around the board or ask her to promise every Friday after this one. That made it easy to remain where she was.
"For the record," he said, "your pawn is exposed."
Mara glanced at the board. "Then take it."
He studied her face, suspicious now of gifts that looked too simple. She laughed. When he finally moved his bishop, she answered with the knight he had forgotten to watch.
"Check," she said.
Luca looked at the squares, then at her. Outside, the rain kept falling. Inside, the bookstore was warm, their dinner was booked, and the next move belonged to him.
