"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 10: The Last Missing Box
Chapter 10: The Last Missing Box
"The box is no longer in my possession," Dennis Rourke said.
Mara sat across from him in the management office where she had once collected a spare key. Her lawyer sat on her left. Luca and his counsel occupied the other side of the narrow conference table. She had asked them all to come; each had sent Rourke a separate written request the night before.
"You signed as its custodian after Adrian Voss reviewed the contents," Mara said. "Where did it go?"
Rourke glanced at Luca. "I manage property, Mr. Moretti. I don't keep your family archives."
"That wasn't her question," Luca said.
Mara touched the certified copy of the slip. "You filed the delivery under my bookstore's building account. You then proposed a rent increase and held the renewal discussion after Adrian accused the store. I'm asking you for the box's next destination."
"The rent reflects the market."
"Then you'll have no trouble explaining the archive separately."
Rourke's counsel slid a sheet across the table. It was an invoice from a private shredding service, dated the day after the box reached his office. The description read
obsolete records
. There was no inventory attached.
"Destroyed at Mr. Voss's instruction," Rourke said. "There. You have your answer."
Luca studied the invoice. Its vendor was one of the three dormant names on Evan's list.
"Did you pay this?" Luca asked.
"My office did. Voss reimbursed us."
Mara's lawyer stopped her before she could respond. "We'll request the actual service record."
Rourke gave a thin smile. "You're welcome to ask."
Outside, Mara called June to check on the store. The junior league had filled the reading room, and a family was signing up for next month. Mara promised to be back by the afternoon game.
"He expects us to believe the box is gone," she told Luca after ending the call.
"It's possible it is."
"That invoice tells us what someone wanted recorded. We need to ask the people who handled it."
Luca looked at the vendor name. "The outside specialist can follow the payment."
"And my lawyer can request the disposal record."
Neither tried to do the other's job.
The specialist found a payment from Rourke's firm to the vendor, followed by a matching reimbursement from an Adrian controlled expense account. But the shredding company named on the invoice had ceased operating years earlier. The account receiving the money belonged to an unrelated document storage business. Evan recognized its address: it was a small facility near the river, not far from his old office.
Mara compared the invoice date with the day Celia had received the box. The turnaround was too fast for an ordinary disposal request, though it could have been scheduled in advance. She marked the discrepancy for her lawyer instead of presenting it as proof. Each small fact had become more useful when she left it attached to the document that could support it.

"Adrian used the dead vendor's name to disguise storage as disposal," Evan said.
Mara asked the question that mattered to her. "Can the facility confirm it still has the box?"
Through counsel, the storage business confirmed that a sealed box had been logged under Rourke's company account. The record described it by weight, not contents. It had not been released. Luca's company sought preservation of records it believed it owned. Mara's lawyer sought preservation of any papers that belonged to her grandfather. Neither asked the staff to open it without authorization.
Adrian learned about the requests before they received a response. He called Luca that evening.
"You're letting a bookseller tell you how to run your company," he said.
Luca put the call on speaker in his lawyer's office after telling Adrian that counsel was present. Mara was there by invitation.
"I'm listening to the people who have records you tried to erase," Luca said.
"Evan copied confidential files. That woman used them to get close to you."
"You came into her store and accused her in front of children. She's entitled to defend herself."
"Your father understood loyalty."
Luca glanced at Mara. "My father asked her grandfather to keep an independent copy. Maybe he understood what loyalty could become."
Adrian ended the call.
The next morning, a lawyer for the storage business notified both sides that Adrian had attempted to schedule collection under an old account credential. The facility had refused release while ownership was disputed and preserved the request. It was the first direct move Adrian had made since the tournament that placed him near the missing box again.
An investigator reviewing Evan's complaint asked for the transfer receipts, the failed collection request and the invoice trail. The material went through counsel, with the original receipt still held by the independent specialist. Luca's board removed Adrian from all company roles pending the investigation. Evan's employment allegation was also formally withdrawn; the company acknowledged that approvals bearing his credentials were disputed.
Mara received an email from Rourke that afternoon. He was willing to discuss a new lease if she agreed to withdraw her claim that his office had mishandled the archive. His lawyer had not sent it. Mara forwarded the message to hers and saved the original.
"He's trying to make my bookstore the price of my silence," she told June.
"What are you going to do?"
Mara looked at the league calendar. The community center had offered more dates; the bakery could host evening play. Staying in the building mattered. Staying on Rourke's terms would cost her something she could not put in a ledger.
She wrote back through counsel: the archive dispute and the lease would be handled separately. She would not bargain away a factual record. If renewal failed, she would move the league, and she had already asked about another storefront two blocks away.
That night Luca found her closing the bookstore. He waited at the threshold until she waved him in.
"I heard about the email," he said.
"I'm not asking you to buy this place."
"I know."
He placed a paper bag of dinner on the counter. She had missed lunch. He had noticed and asked before coming whether she wanted food. She had said yes.
"I thought I had to solve every threat before it reached someone I cared about," he said. "Today you had three choices, and you made all of them without me."
"I still wanted you here."
He looked at her. For a moment the evidence, the rent, and the years of his family's influence fell away. Then Mara's phone rang.
Her lawyer had received notice: the storage business had agreed to a supervised inventory the next morning, with representatives for each claimant and an independent record keeper present. Rourke and Adrian had both objected. The box would be opened anyway under the agreed preservation process.
"Tomorrow," Mara told Luca, "we finally find out what they tried to call trash."
