"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 9: No One's Pawn
Chapter 9: No One's Pawn
The clerk at the records depot would not give Mara another customer's paperwork over the phone. She expected that. She asked instead for the public facing process for verifying whether a document addressed to her grandfather had been transferred under her authorization.
"It depends on what the box contains," the clerk said.
"Can you preserve its intake and release records while our attorneys contact you?"
"Your attorney can send a written request."
Mara called hers. Luca's outside counsel made a separate request on behalf of Moretti Freight. Their interests overlapped, but she kept the instructions and copies separate. Two days later the depot confirmed that the box had been delivered to Rourke's management office. A receptionist there, Celia Park, had signed for it.
Mara recognized Celia's name. Celia had handled her rent checks for years and once helped carry a stack of donated books up Second Story's stairs. Mara called to ask about the chess league, not the box.
"I thought your boss might have a vacant ground floor space we could use for overflow tables," she said.
Celia sounded wary. "You'll have to ask Mr. Rourke."
"I will. How are you?"
"Busy."
After a silence, Celia added, "I saw the post about your store. My daughter played on Saturday. She had a good time."
"I'm glad. Tell her Walter still owes her a rematch."
Mara left it there. She was not going to trick Celia into discussing her employer on an open line. That afternoon Celia came into Second Story with her daughter and bought a beginner's chess book. Mara helped the girl choose a set of pieces. When Celia was leaving, she slipped a folded business card across the counter.
On the back was the name of a lawyer who had represented employees in disputes with Rourke's firm. "If you have a question about company records," Celia said, "ask someone who can protect the person who answers it."
Mara thanked her without asking for more. Her own lawyer contacted the name that evening. Celia agreed to speak through counsel and to preserve what she had personally received and seen.
Her account changed the shape of the case. The box had arrived already opened. Rourke had instructed Celia to file its delivery slip under the building account for Second Story, even though the box itself went directly to Adrian Voss. Celia had kept a routine scanned copy of the slip in the office system. It recorded Adrian's collection time and his signature. She could not say what the box contained.
Celia's lawyer made clear that she had not copied confidential contents from the box. She had retained the receipt in the normal course of her job. Mara was relieved. A witness who could explain the process from memory and point to a routine business record would be more useful than a frightened employee pressured to take risks for her.

"Please tell her I won't use her daughter's name in any of this," Mara said.
"She'll appreciate that," the lawyer replied.
The information supported a direct link between Adrian and the missing archive. It also explained why Rourke's office code appeared on Mara's rent notice. It did not prove Rourke knew what Adrian had taken. Mara made sure Luca understood the difference when she shared a copy through their lawyers.
"We need the original slip," he said.
"Celia's counsel is arranging how to provide it. Don't call her."
"I won't."
He had kept his distance for four days. No guards had reappeared. Tomas sent updates only when Mara requested them. She missed Luca's company more sharply for the fact that he was doing what she'd asked.
The league proposal moved faster than she expected. June offered her cafe on alternate weeks. A community center could host a monthly junior round. The coach recruited two volunteer arbiters. Mara sold memberships with a clear promise: the fees paid for tables, clocks and book discounts across all three venues. With enough people joining, Second Story could withstand the proposed rent increase while her lawyer negotiated the lease.
On Thursday, Mara put a new card beside the scoreboard:
Neighborhood Chess League. Founding Night, Seven O'Clock.
Walter arrived first. Luca came at six fifty eight, alone.
"Is this invitation open to me?" he asked.
"It's a public event."
"That wasn't the question."
Mara thought about all the times he had turned her refusal into a puzzle he hoped to solve. This time he stood still and waited.
"Yes," she said. "Sit with me after the first round."
The room filled gradually. She introduced a shy boy to June's cousin, who had learned chess in the Navy. Luca helped Walter carry two folding tables from storage and did not announce that he owned a fleet of trucks. Mara caught his eye across the room. He looked as if he was about to say something; instead he asked Walter where to place the clocks.
After the round, Mara found him at their table. The old chalkboard still read MARA 1, LUCA 0, DRAWS 2. She set up the white pieces without sitting down.
"I found Celia because she trusted me to speak to her daughter like a customer," Mara said. "You couldn't have sent a team to get that."
"I know."
"When you put men inside the store, I wondered if you'd ever see a difference between me and a place you needed to secure."
"I saw it after you sent me away. I should have seen it before."
"What happens when you're afraid again?"
"I tell you. Then I listen to your answer."
It wasn't an extravagant promise. Mara believed it precisely because he had to practice it.
She sat. He reached for a pawn but stopped when her phone lit up. Her lawyer had sent the scan of Celia's delivery slip. Mara opened it, then handed the phone to Luca.
Under Adrian's signature was a second line neither Celia nor the depot clerk had mentioned:
Contents reviewed and returned to custodian.
The custodian's name appeared in full.
Dennis Rourke.
"He handled the box himself," Mara said. "After Adrian saw it."
Luca's gaze moved to the chessboard, then back to the document. "We need to know what he returned."
Mara picked up her white knight. "My lawyer can request the inventory. Yours can preserve the company's records. Tomorrow we ask Rourke what he did with my grandfather's papers."
She moved the knight. Luca studied the board, knowing better now than to assume the move was hers alone to make.
