"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 8: The Price of Staying Open
Chapter 8: The Price of Staying Open
By Monday morning, a photograph of Adrian in the bookstore had reached a neighborhood group online. Someone had posted his accusation as if it were established fact. June called before Mara opened.
"Don't read the comments alone," she said.
"I'm making coffee. Come over and supervise my bad decisions."
The comments hurt more than Mara expected. A few members defended her. Others wondered whether Second Story had held stolen records. A parent asked to cancel two memberships until things were clearer. Mara processed the refunds before the bakery opened.
She did not argue with strangers online. With her lawyer's help, she wrote one plain statement: Adrian had made an allegation at the tournament; Mara disputed it; the store remained open; authorities had her report and the relevant records. She posted it on the store's page and placed a copy at the counter.
Her landlord, Dennis Rourke, called at ten. "This attention isn't good for the building," he said.
Mara glanced at the framed lease on her desk. She had made every payment, even through the winter her furnace had failed. "If you have a concern about the property, send it to me in writing."
"I'm trying to have a conversation."
"Then don't start it with a rumor."
"Then you'll be glad to know I asked for the false statement to be taken down."
"The rent proposal still stands."
"My lawyer will respond to it."
He ended the call without asking about the tournament. Mara wrote down the time and his exact words.
Across town, Luca's company restricted Adrian's access while outside counsel preserved the relevant accounts. The move was visible enough that Adrian knew his cover was failing. It also exposed Luca to questions from investors about how long the suspicious payments had gone unnoticed. He answered what he knew and did not use Evan as an explanation for his own oversight.
By afternoon Tomas had identified the man in the baseball cap as an employee of a document retrieval contractor. The contractor's work order came from Adrian's office. That placed Adrian's inquiry at Mara's door; it did not establish that he had directed the sedan or the online post. Luca gave Mara the records with those limits clearly marked.
Then he sent two guards to the bookstore without telling her.
He had meant to position them outside. Tomas had moved them in when a school group arrived and the sedan slowed near the curb. Tomas called it a precaution. Neither man had asked the store manager or introduced himself to the coach. The gap between Luca's intention and their presence inside the shop was exactly the gap Mara had warned him about.
Mara spotted the first near the fiction shelf, pretending to examine a novel upside down. The second waited beside the children's room. She walked straight to them.
"Out," she said.

The man with the book touched his earpiece. "We're here for your safety."
"I understand. Out."
Both left. Mara called Luca.
"I asked Tomas not to put anyone inside," he said when she told him. "I should have checked."
"You instructed him to watch the store. He decided what that meant because you let him."
"The car returned this morning."
"You should have told me. I have a camera. I have a police report. You put strangers beside children without informing me or their parents."
Luca arrived twenty minutes later. Mara took him into her office, closed the door and placed the children's tournament schedule between them.
"I made safety arrangements with the school. I chose where the children would sit. I did it while knowing Adrian might come. Do you think I would refuse to discuss a real threat?"
"No."
"Then why didn't you discuss it?"
"Because I was frightened."
The admission came so plainly that she stopped. Luca looked at the schedule rather than at her.
"Adrian knew where you were. He knew your lease, your employees' hours, the doors you use. I have spent years making decisions fast enough to keep people safe. I did it again."
"And I had to discover your decision while one of your men stood beside my picture books."
He nodded. "I was wrong."
She wanted to believe the words were enough. The fact that he had said them before, after the building inquiry, made them harder to accept now.
"Go home, Luca. I need you to follow a boundary when you're scared, not only when we're getting along."
He did. He also instructed Tomas that no one was to enter or monitor her premises without Mara's consent, except to respond to an immediate emergency. He sent her the instruction in writing. Mara acknowledged it with a single word:
Received.
That evening the school's coach offered to bring the next tournament to a larger venue. Mara could understand why. She asked for one week to decide. June stayed after closing to help count the weekend's sales. They had sold enough books to cover the event and very little more. Three new memberships had come in after Mara's statement; four had been canceled.
"It's still a start," June said.
"It's not enough for the rent."
Mara laid the register tape beside the new membership list. She separated event sales from ordinary book sales, then calculated what repeat attendance would need to bring in each month. June suggested charging more for coffee; Mara rejected it because the parents had bought drinks precisely because they could afford them. They needed more steady members and another venue to share overhead. The arithmetic narrowed the options, which helped her choose one.
"What would be?"
Mara looked at the chess tables, then the empty front display. "A league. Here and at other shops. An event every week instead of one crowded Saturday. Shared customers, shared costs."
June pulled up a chair. They mapped nearby cafes and community spaces until nearly midnight. Mara sent a proposal to the coach, then to three local businesses. One replied before she went to bed.
In the morning her lawyer called. Dennis Rourke had notified her that he would not discuss a longer lease until the allegations against the store were resolved. The existing lease remained in force, but the ninety day renewal deadline was approaching.
Mara reread the depot release order. Rourke's firm had received the missing box. She needed to find out who had signed for it before he could use the approaching deadline to push her out.
