"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 7: The Record He Couldn't Erase
Chapter 7: The Record He Couldn't Erase
Adrian stopped reaching for the stack of statements.
Mara held the Foundry receipt where he could see the date and his name. "You entered the parcel under a temporary authorization. I have the facility's certified record."
"I'm authorized to review company property," he said.
"The parcel was addressed to my grandfather. You weren't reviewing company property."
One of his attorneys glanced at the other. Adrian recovered his smile. "A regrettable clerical mistake. It doesn't change what Mr. Ward did."
"Then give your statement to the authorities," Mara said. "You don't get to accuse my store in front of children."
June guided the nearest parents toward the tournament tables. Walter called the next round in a firm, carrying voice. Chairs scraped. The chess clocks began ticking again, although no one in the room had forgotten Adrian was there.
Luca stepped beside Mara. "That letterhead belongs to my company. Did I approve your statement?"
"You weren't answering your phone."
"That's a no."
Adrian lowered the papers. "I was protecting the business you've allowed Ward to compromise."
Evan opened his document case. "You ordered the second transfer."
He removed a sealed sleeve and handed it to the independent records specialist, who had been waiting near the history shelves. The specialist documented the time, showed the transfer receipt through the clear sleeve to Luca and Mara, then placed it on a clean table away from the food and the children.
Two boxes of registers had been moved from the supposedly flooded warehouse to a records depot three months after Adrian signed the destruction report. Adrian's name appeared on the order, alongside a courier's receipt and the depot's inventory number.
"Where did you get that?" Adrian asked.
"From the depot," Evan said. "The clerk kept a duplicate when your office asked for the original back."
Adrian looked toward the door. Tomas stood outside the glass, leaving the entrance clear. The attorney on Adrian's left said quietly, "Let's go."
"Before you do," Mara said, "leave the copies you've already put on my counter."
"You have no right to seize them."
"I have a right to record what you brought into my store. June photographed the front of the statement when you raised it. My camera recorded the rest. Take your papers if you want. I need the name of the person who made the allegation about this business."
Adrian picked up the stack, but one sheet had slid under a tournament flyer. Mara left it in place until the attorney acknowledged it. Then she photographed both sides in front of him, laid it flat, and wrote down where it had been found. Its claim named Evan as the thief and said Second Story had concealed records for a fee. There was no supporting transaction or source.
"My lawyer will contact yours," Adrian told Luca.
"Do that," Luca said. "And stay out of every company system until my board reviews your access."

Adrian's smile vanished. For a second Mara saw the man who had wanted the store watched and the tournament canceled. Then he walked out between his attorneys.
The first round after the interruption was uneven. Two children forgot whose turn it was. Mara apologized to the coach and offered to postpone the afternoon games. The coach spoke with the parents; they chose to continue. Mara stayed to reset a clock and answer questions. She would not make the children's event collateral damage in Adrian's dispute.
When the families settled, Evan joined Mara and Luca in the upstairs office. The specialist remained with them. Evan explained why he'd disappeared.
He had flagged payments to three inactive vendors. Within a day, amended approvals appeared under his credentials. Adrian showed him an internal report that made him look responsible. Evan took copies of the transaction dates and left before his account could be used again. He had not known whether Luca would believe him; Adrian had spent years speaking for the family.
"Why leave the book at Foundry?" Mara asked.
"Your grandfather's index was an independent record. Adrian could change my files. He couldn't change a paper card written four years ago. I meant to use the manual to point you to the older archive. When I realized somebody was following me, I left it at the facility and held on to the original receipt."
"You could have warned me someone might come looking," she said.
Evan looked down. "I should have. I was afraid he'd reach me first."
Mara did not excuse him. She did understand the fear.
The specialist compared the depot inventory number with the grandfather's index. It matched the missing set, but one box was unaccounted for. The depot had released it again two months earlier, this time to a different company. Evan had never seen that authorization.
"Did you ever open the other boxes?" Mara asked.
"No. I only secured the receipt. I didn't want to remove papers I couldn't account for."
The specialist approved of that decision. She called the depot from Mara's office while all three listened, asking it to preserve the intake photographs, access logs and any remaining boxes. The clerk would confirm only that a formal request had to be sent. The specialist sent it immediately and copied both lawyers. Mara wrote the request number on her inventory copy. She wanted a trail that existed outside anyone's memory.
Evan offered to give the original receipt to Luca. Luca shook his head. "The specialist holds it. I won't have Adrian claim we altered it."
For the first time since entering, Evan's grip on the document case loosened. Mara could see how much it cost him to trust a man whose company had put his name on the fraudulent approvals.
Luca asked for the company name. The specialist turned the receipt so they could all read it.

"It's a property management firm," Mara said. "My landlord's."
Mara went downstairs to check on the last round before reading the page again. June handed her a cup of coffee and quietly reported that Adrian had left without approaching any parents. A mother asked whether the shop would be open next weekend; Mara said it would. That simple answer felt like a decision she would have to defend in the days ahead.
Luca waited upstairs. "I'll have counsel speak to your landlord," he offered.
"Mine will. Yours can ask about your company's missing box. We shouldn't pretend those are the same case."
"You're right."
Mara took a breath. She had spent the last hour confronting a man who held her livelihood in contempt. Luca's willingness to step back mattered, even though she still needed him to prove it could last beyond a quiet room.
The room went quiet. Adrian had asked about her building days before; now an old box had traveled through the same firm. Mara took out her rent notice. Its reference code began with the same three letters as the depot's release order.
"This doesn't prove my landlord is involved," she said. "But it tells us the box and the rent notice went through his office."
Luca started to speak, then waited.
"I want my lease reviewed by someone outside your companies," Mara said. "And I want the depot record copied before anyone there decides it was another clerical mistake."
"I'll pay for the copies through the investigation," Luca said. "You choose your own lawyer."
That was the answer she needed. Downstairs, Walter announced the final round. Mara took her grandfather's inventory and went back to the table she had promised the children. The missing box was now pointed straight at her landlord, and she had ninety days to find out what that meant for the store.
