"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 6: The Move Beneath the Cover
Chapter 6: The Move Beneath the Cover
Luca met Mara in Mrs. Alvarez's workshop. The bookbinder had agreed to photograph the chess manual's stitching before anyone handled the lifted endpaper again.
"Adrian accessed the parcel," Mara said, showing Luca the certified record. "He signed for it yesterday."
Luca read the name twice. "That places him there. It doesn't prove what he took."
"I know. Evan left a second instruction."
She opened the manual to its inside cover. Under the bookplate was a faint pressure mark, visible when Mrs. Alvarez shone a light across the paper:
Who paid to move the originals?
"A question isn't evidence," Luca said.
"It tells us where to look."
Mrs. Alvarez returned with a photograph of the original repair invoice. Mara's grandfather had paid to preserve the book; a Moretti company had paid separately to transport three boxes of private registers from a riverfront office to a bonded warehouse. The authorization on the transport order bore Adrian's name.
Luca recognized the warehouse. His father had used it years ago. Adrian had told him the boxes were destroyed after a flood.
"Was there a flood?" Mara asked.
"In part of the building. I saw a loss report."
"Written by whom?"
He looked at her. "Adrian."
That afternoon Luca hired an independent records specialist, not employed by any Moretti company, to examine copies of the old loss report and the current invoices. Mara brought her grandfather's index to the meeting. They kept originals in separate custody and recorded every transfer. She insisted on sitting through the review.
The specialist found the same three dormant vendor names appearing in both periods. That pattern did not identify the person who approved the new payments. It did disprove Adrian's claim that the old registers had no connection to Evan's concerns.
"Could the old list have been copied recently?" Mara asked.
"Your grandfather dated each card," the specialist said. "The ink and paper are consistent with the older archive, though I'd need a formal examination to attest to it. The current transactions give us dates we can verify through the bank."
Luca authorized that examination. Mara asked for a written copy of the findings, and the specialist agreed to send identical reports to both of them. When Luca's phone rang with a call from his office, he stepped outside to answer it. Mara watched the specialist seal her grandfather's cards in a numbered sleeve. Keeping custody clear felt less glamorous than a confrontation, and far more useful.
Then Luca received a message from Adrian:
Heard you are looking at the flood inventory. If this is about Ward, we should speak before rumors spread.
"He knows," Tomas said when Luca showed him the screen.
"He's guessing how much," Mara replied. "Let him."
Luca had planned to confront Adrian in his office. Mara argued against it. "He controls the company's archive and he already got to the storage parcel. He'll tell you the papers mean whatever he needs them to mean. We need Evan and the records outside his office."

"Evan has been gone for weeks."
"He left directions for whoever found the book. He's waiting to see whether we can follow them."
She showed Luca the registration page for the school chess tournament. Months before Evan disappeared, he had signed up to volunteer at Walter's annual event, which had been canceled that year. The address he used matched a forwarding service, but the emergency contact field held an email account still active according to a receipt Mara had sent that morning.
"You emailed him?" Luca asked.
"A tournament invitation. It contained one line only he should understand:
Foundry kept the book. The envelope was empty.
"
Luca's expression tightened. "That may bring him here. It may bring Adrian."
"Adrian already knows where the bookstore is. We'll hold the tournament as planned, with Walter and the school families. You can keep your people outside. The police have my incident report and the camera clip. If Evan replies, I decide where to meet him."
"You decided all of this before you told me."
"I decided my part. I'm telling you because I want you involved. You can refuse."
Luca considered the difference. Finally he nodded. "I'll have the records specialist ready if Evan brings anything."
For three days, Mara prepared the event while the bookstore filled with folding chairs and borrowed clocks. Membership sales covered the room costs, barely. June promised to handle the coffee. Walter argued with the school coach about how long children needed between rounds. Ordinary problems persisted alongside the dangerous one. Mara found she needed them.
On Friday a second message reached the tournament inbox, this one with no name:
Cancel it. People will blame you when the truth comes out.
Mara saved the original email and its headers, then forwarded it with her incident number to the same officer who had logged the sedan. She did not post it online or call Adrian to demand an explanation. The sender had offered no proof of identity. The message did, however, settle one question: somebody wanted the event stopped.
She drafted a note to parents explaining the normal event exits and who would supervise the children. She did not make the tournament into a trap for them. June agreed to manage the front counter, while Walter and the coach kept the chess rounds moving. Luca reviewed Mara's arrangements only after she invited him to. He suggested keeping a copy of the camera recording off site. Mara arranged it herself.
On tournament morning, Tomas identified the visitor in the baseball cap outside the shop. He had parked two blocks away and was watching the entrance. Luca informed Mara; she chose to keep the event open, moved the children's tables farther from the windows, and told the coach to use the side exit if she gave the word. Tomas stayed outside. No one entered the store on Luca's orders.

At eleven twenty, Mara's tournament inbox received a reply from Evan's address:
I can prove who ordered the second transfer. Do not trust any copy brought by Moretti security. I will come myself.
Mara read it to Luca. His face did not change, but he asked her to forward the message directly to the records specialist. She did.
At noon, the first round ended. Parents crowded June's coffee table. Walter was loudly explaining to a ten year old why a draw could be a brave result. Mara saw a man enter alone, carrying a worn canvas document case. He scanned the room until he found her.
Evan Ward.
He looked thinner than the image Luca had shown her. He kept one hand on the case as Mara approached.
"You came," she said.
"You found the right book."
"Adrian took the envelope."
"I expected him to." Evan opened his case just enough to show her a sealed folder. "I kept the original transfer receipt. Your grandfather's copy was the way to confirm it hadn't been changed."
Before Mara could ask where he'd been hiding, a voice carried from the front of the store.
"I'm glad Mr. Ward finally decided to face everyone."
Adrian Voss stood just inside the door, impeccably dressed, with two attorneys behind him. He held up a printed statement bearing Moretti Freight's letterhead.
"I have copies for anyone who wants to know who stole from this company," he said. "And how this store helped him conceal it."
Conversations stopped. Evan gripped the case. Luca moved toward Adrian, but Mara caught his sleeve.
"Don't," she said. "He's counting on you to take this out of my hands."
She stepped between Adrian and the families at the tables, holding up the certified access record from Foundry Storage.
"Before you hand those out," Mara said, "tell them why you opened the parcel addressed to my grandfather yesterday."
