"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 3: A Score on the Wall
Chapter 3: A Score on the Wall
The rent notice arrived on Monday, folded so neatly that Mara almost mistook it for a holiday card.
Her landlord proposed an increase when the lease renewed in ninety days. Added to the winter heating bill and the balance she still owed a distributor, the new rent would erase what little Second Story earned from ordinary sales.
June found her behind the counter with the notice and a calculator.
"You could tell your customers," June said. "They'd help."
"With a fundraiser once. I need a reason for them to come back every month."
Mara opened her calendar. The chess nights drew people, but most left without buying a book. She began sketching a low cost membership: reserved tournament places, a monthly book selection, coffee vouchers from the bakery. June leaned over to read it.
June pointed at Mara's first price. "That won't even cover the coffee."
Mara recalculated the margin, then raised the fee by three dollars. "Now?"
"Now you might make enough to keep the lights on."
"That's the romance of owning a bookstore."
They called the local school that afternoon. Its chess coach wanted a venue for a weekend tournament but had no budget for room hire. Mara offered a revenue split on refreshments and a family discount on the first month's membership. It was a risk. She booked the date anyway, then wrote it in ink so she would not back out when she saw the heating bill.
"I'll do the coffee," she said. "If you send people to me."
"Deal."
By Thursday, Mara had invited two school chess clubs to an autumn event and persuaded Walter to run a beginners' table. She printed ten membership forms on the ancient office printer. It jammed on the eleventh.
Luca arrived at seven exactly. His eyes went to the chalkboard beside the table: MARA 1, LUCA 0, DRAWS 1.
"Who did that?" he asked.
"A customer."
"You kept it."
"The customer's handwriting was excellent."
He took off his coat. Tomas, now carrying the local history book with a bookmark halfway through it, hid a smile behind a display.
They began. Mara attacked sooner than usual. Luca took a pawn she had expected him to refuse. For six moves she believed she had trapped his queen, until his rook appeared on an open file and she realized the pawn had been bait.
"You changed your opening," she said.
"You noticed."
"I'm about to charge for lessons."
They drew again, but this time Mara had to defend for twenty minutes. Luca looked pleased. She added a second mark in the draw column before he could say anything about it.
When the crowd thinned, she carried a box of unsold books into the back room. Luca followed with a second box without asking. She let him set it down.
The rent notice lay on the desk beneath her membership forms. Luca's gaze passed over it before she covered it with a ledger.

"Business difficult?" he asked.
"Business requires arithmetic. You've met arithmetic."
"I could recommend a commercial lease attorney."
"You could. I haven't asked you to."
He nodded, accepting the line. Mara was surprised enough to soften her voice.
"I am trying something first," she said, handing him a membership form. "Since you keep occupying the best table, you can be my first member."
Luca read the form. "It includes a bakery voucher."
"June's idea."
"And access to the tournament?"
"If Walter approves your sportsmanship."
"That seems unlikely."
"We all face setbacks."
He signed and paid the listed price, no more. Mara slipped the form into her ledger. For the first time that week, the figures on the page looked like a plan instead of a verdict.
Walter leaned in from the doorway. "First member?"
"First paying member," Mara said. "You're a founding member."
"Does that mean I get a discount?"
"It means you have to help set up the school tournament."
Walter considered this, then signed the next form. Luca watched Mara write two names at the top of a fresh page. She had taken a problem he could have eliminated with one transaction and turned it into a reason for other people to gather. He wanted to ask whether it would be enough. The way she closed the ledger told him it was hers to decide.
The following morning, her landlord called. Someone representing Moretti Properties had requested information about the building. Mara listened, thanked him, and hung up.
She took the rent notice from her desk and laid it beside Luca's membership form. He had respected her answer in the back room. He had made a different move after leaving.
Mara called the number on his card.
"This is Mara Bennett. Tell whoever works for you to stop asking about my building."
Luca was quiet for a beat. "I didn't authorize a purchase."
"Then why is your company calling my landlord?"
"I'll find out."
"Please do. And don't mistake that for permission to solve my rent."
She ended the call before he could answer.
Across town, Luca summoned Tomas. The inquiry had gone out from Moretti Properties under Adrian Voss's office code. Tomas had not ordered it. Neither had Luca.
"Voss wants this building?" Tomas asked.
"Or he wants to know what I found there."
"Did you find anything?"
Luca thought of Mara's sharp question about Evan, the carved knight, and the way she'd covered the rent notice. He had found more reasons to return. None explained Adrian's sudden interest.
"Get the name of whoever requested the records," he said. "No contact with the owner."
That afternoon Mara photographed her grandfather's inventory and checked the shop's borrowing log. The missing chess book had not been borrowed. Three weeks earlier, someone had initialed a temporary shelf move beside its title: E.W.
Evan Ward.
She did not call Luca. She checked the inventory page beneath it and found an address for a bookbinder her grandfather once used. She made an appointment, taking a copy of the page and leaving the original locked in the safe.
At closing, she noticed a pale sedan parked across the street. Its driver lifted a phone, appeared to photograph the front window, and drove away.
Mara wrote down the plate number before its taillights disappeared. Then she picked up Luca's card. This time, when she called, she intended to ask questions first.
Her phone rang once. Luca answered.
"Do you know a man named Evan Ward?" she asked.
"Yes."
"Does he use a bookbinder on Spring Garden Street?"
The pause told her more than a denial would have.
"Why?" Luca asked.
"Because somebody is watching my shop. And I think the missing book is connected to him."
Luca's voice sharpened. "Are you inside?"
"I am. I have the driver's plate number, too. You can have it when you tell me what Evan found."
Mara set the card beside her grandfather's inventory and waited for Luca to decide whether he would answer her as a partner or keep treating her like another square on the board.
