"The Man Who Kept Losing on Thursdays" Chapter 1: Checkmate in Public
Chapter 1: Checkmate in Public
"Your king has nowhere to go."
The words were quiet enough that Luca Moretti could have pretended he hadn't heard them. The dozen people gathered around the chess table made that impossible.
He studied the board again. Mara Bennett's white rook held the back rank. Her knight covered the square he needed. His own bishop, which he had spent the last ten minutes protecting, blocked the final escape.
He had taken her queen six moves earlier. He had assumed that settled the matter.
"Checkmate," Mara said.
Somebody behind the mystery shelves let out a delighted, involuntary laugh.
Luca looked up. Mara held his gaze, one hand resting beside the board. She wore a blue cardigan with a fraying cuff and had a streak of pencil graphite on her cheek. Her smile was small, but there was nothing apologetic about it.
June, the baker from next door, stood at the edge of the crowd with a paper cup in each hand. She offered one to Mara. Mara shook her head without looking away from Luca. She had spent the last hour reconciling invoices between games, and she had nearly declined his challenge. Then she had watched him dismiss Walter before the older man had even finished resetting his pieces.
Her grandfather had taught her to watch what a player did after winning. Luca had quietly helped Walter locate a fallen pawn. He had also kept one eye on the front door throughout their game. Mara couldn't decide which detail troubled her more.
"You gave me the queen," he said.
"I did."
"To pull my rook off the file."
"Among other things."
His security chief, Tomas, shifted behind him. Luca did not turn around. If Tomas had smiled, Luca preferred not to know.
Thursday chess night at Second Story was supposed to be a convenient place to watch for a missing man. Instead, Luca had let a bookseller draw a crowd around his public defeat.
Twenty minutes earlier, he'd stood near the back window watching the entrance. Evan Ward had visited this store three times before disappearing, always on a Thursday. The neighboring shop's camera had caught him carrying a slim document case. Tonight, Luca had hoped to learn whom he met.
Walter, an elderly regular with an impressive white mustache, had mistaken Luca's attention to the chess tables for interest in a game. Luca had beaten him quickly. Mara had watched from behind the counter and said, "You always attack the player who's easiest to see?"
Luca had taken the empty chair opposite her.
Now Walter looked as if he had won the city championship himself.
"Good game," Mara said, offering her hand.
Luca shook it. Her palm was warm and ink stained. He was accustomed to people adjusting themselves around him, choosing each word before they spoke. Mara looked at him as if he were simply the man who had missed a knight fork.

"Again," he said.
"Next Thursday. We close in fifteen minutes."
He could have asked for an exception. He could see from the empty register display and the carefully repaired spine of the book beside her that an offer of money would be useful here.
Instead, he released her hand. "Seven?"
"Seven. Bring a better plan."
Tomas opened the front door. Luca was halfway through it when he saw a man across the street turn away from the bookstore window. Dark coat. Pale canvas bag. No umbrella in the rain.
The man walked quickly toward a waiting sedan.
Luca stopped. "Did you see him?"
Tomas followed his gaze. "The one by the newspaper box? Yes."
"Find out who picked him up. Quietly."
In the car, Luca took out his phone. A message from his office filled the screen: another payment had been approved that morning through a vendor whose address did not exist. It was the fourth in two weeks.
Evan Ward, the finance director who had first challenged those payments, was now missing. Luca's adviser Adrian Voss said Evan had taken the money and run. The records on Luca's desk suggested a cleverer thief had put Evan's name on the trail.
Tomas sat opposite him. "I can put someone inside next Thursday."
"No. We don't frighten the owner or her customers."
"She might have recognized Ward."
"Then I'll ask her."
Tomas checked the note on his phone. "Adrian wants us at the office by eight. He's prepared a statement about Ward."
"He can wait."
"He says the press is asking why we suspended him."
Luca turned the phone facedown on the seat. He had not suspended Evan. Adrian had proposed the measure, then released an internal memo before Luca had signed it. That was one of several decisions Luca intended to discuss with him. An innocent man might run from a false accusation. A guilty one might arrange for the accusation to travel faster than the evidence.
Tomas studied him. "You could have asked tonight."
Luca looked through the rain streaked window. Across the street, Mara was lowering a metal shutter halfway over her display. She paused to help Walter into his coat before finishing the job.
"Next Thursday," Luca said.
Inside Second Story, Mara reset the pieces one by one. Walter stood beside her, still enjoying himself.
"You know who that was?" he asked.
"A man with expensive shoes and a problem accepting defeat."
Walter gave her a look. "Luca Moretti."
She recognized the name from trucks at the riverfront and the articles people shared without saying much in public. Moretti Freight. Moretti Properties. Old family money, newer rumors.
Mara set the black king on its square. "He lost the same as anyone else."
"That's what worries me," Walter said.
She waited until he'd gone, then reached under the table for a dropped pawn. Instead, her fingers found a stiff rectangle wedged behind the table leg: a claim ticket from a storage facility on the south side. A number was written across it in blue ink. On the back, someone had drawn a tiny black knight.
Mara turned the ticket over twice. The chess table had belonged to her grandfather. He had carved the knight on its edge years ago, but this mark was drawn in fresh ink.
The bell above the door rang.
She looked up. The shop was empty except for her. The door moved once more in the wind, although she was certain she'd locked it.
Across the street, a pale sedan pulled away from the curb.
Mara slid the ticket into her cardigan pocket and locked the door again.
In the office she took out the evening's receipts, found an unused envelope, and sealed the ticket inside. Its claim number ended in 64, the number of squares on a chessboard. Probably coincidence. Her grandfather had trained her to distrust coincidences that arrived alongside a freshly unlocked door.
She checked the alarm history. Someone had entered the correct code at nine sixteen, minutes before she found the ticket. Only she and her two employees knew it. Her employees had both left before nine. Mara wrote the time on the envelope, then put it in the safe and changed the code before going home.
