"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Cameras" Chapter 9 — The Last Thing Daniel Hid
Evelyn Corsini had saved newspapers for thirty-one years.
Sadie discovered this at four in the morning, standing in a storage room beneath the east wing with dust in her hair and absolutely no patience left.
"Your mother was a hoarder."
Julian lifted another cardboard box onto the table.
"She preferred collector."
"People with thirty years of newspapers always do."
Claire sat cross-legged on the floor beside them, sorting papers by date.
They were looking for February 2004.
More specifically, the week Daniel had been photographed at a bank in Portland, Maine.
Sadie picked up another yellowed copy of The Boston Globe.
"Nothing."
Julian opened a box.
"Keep looking."
"You know, normal couples go to dinner."
Julian paused.
Claire looked up.
Sadie realized what she'd said.
"I didn't mean we're a couple."
Julian's eyebrow lifted.
"I didn't say anything."
"Your face did."
"My face rarely says anything."
"Your face is extremely judgmental."
Claire laughed.
It was the first time Sadie had heard her laugh since Daniel's voice came through the cassette player.
Julian gave his sister a look.
"Don't encourage her."
"Too late."
Then Claire stopped.
She was holding a newspaper.
"February twenty-third, 2004."
Everyone went silent.
Sadie moved beside her.
The crossword had been completed in blue ink.
Evelyn's handwriting.
Julian stared at it.
"She always used black."
Sadie looked at him.
"Always?"
"Always."
Claire leaned closer.
"So somebody else filled this one out."
Sadie's pulse accelerated.
"Daniel."
They carefully removed the page.
At first, the puzzle looked ordinary.
Then Sadie noticed several answers had been written incorrectly.
Not accidentally.
The wrong letters had been pressed harder than the others.
She copied them onto a sheet of paper.
N.
A.
H.
A.
N.
T.
Julian frowned.
"Nahant."
Claire looked up.
"North Shore."
Sadie continued.
The remaining marked squares produced a number.
17.
Then another word.
HARBOR.
Julian was already reaching for his phone.
---
The property stood on a narrow road overlooking Massachusetts Bay.
It had once belonged to Evelyn.
Julian hadn't known that.
According to county records, the small cedar-shingled house had been purchased through a trust in 2003 and quietly maintained ever since.
The beneficiary was listed only as E.C.
Evelyn Corsini.
"Your mother bought a secret house?" Sadie asked.
Julian stared at the building.
"Apparently."
"Your family desperately needed group therapy."
"I'll add it to the list."
Martin stood several feet behind them.
Julian had restored his security clearance that morning.
Ethan had finally proved Martin's credentials had been cloned from a compromised corporate terminal.
Martin hadn't demanded an apology.
Julian had given him one anyway.
It consisted of four words.
"I should've trusted you."
For Julian, Sadie suspected that was practically a sonnet.
They entered the house.
Dust covered most surfaces.
Nothing appeared to have been disturbed in years.
Sadie walked toward the windows.
The ocean stretched gray and endless beyond the glass.
"This place was for Daniel," Claire whispered.
Julian looked at her.
"How do you know?"
Claire touched the windowsill.
"He used to talk about living near the water."
They searched for two hours.
Nothing.
No files.
No safe.
No hidden compartment.
Sadie eventually dropped onto an old couch.
"We have an address and seventeen."
Julian stood near the fireplace.
"Seventeen what?"
"That's the question."
Claire wandered into the kitchen.
Martin checked the basement again.
Sadie stared through the window.
Harbor.
Seventeen.
Nahant.
Then she saw the old wooden pilings below the bluff.
A narrow path led toward the shoreline.
"Julian."
He followed her gaze.
They went outside.
At the bottom of the path stood a weathered boathouse.
Seventeen had been painted above the door.
Most of the number had faded.
But it was there.
---
Inside, they found a workbench, rusted fishing equipment, and an old metal cabinet.
The cabinet was locked.
Julian stepped forward.
Sadie held up a hand.
"If you're about to dramatically kick that open, don't."
He looked offended.
"I wasn't."
Martin produced a set of tools.
"That's why he keeps me around."
Two minutes later, the cabinet opened.
There was a waterproof case inside.
Claire began crying before anyone touched it.
Julian lifted the case onto the workbench.
Inside were three ledgers.
Original shipping manifests.
Bank records.
Photographs.
And a sealed envelope.
JULIAN.
His name.
Written in Daniel's handwriting.
Julian didn't move.
Sadie touched his arm.
"Open it."
He did.
The letter was six pages long.
Julian read silently at first.
Then his face changed.
Sadie watched his eyes stop on one paragraph.
"What does it say?"
He handed her the pages.
Daniel had discovered the fraud in early 2003.
Richard Hale had created shell companies and false shipping contracts to siphon millions through Corsini businesses.
When Daniel found duplicate invoices, he took them to Evelyn.
She believed him.
Together, they began copying records.
Richard discovered what they were doing.
He threatened Daniel.
Not with death.
With Claire.
Daniel decided to disappear long enough to expose him safely.
The warehouse fire ruined that plan.
But it hadn't killed Daniel.
Sadie kept reading.
Six days later, Daniel went to Claire.
He told her nothing because he knew Richard was watching the family.
Then Daniel contacted Evelyn.
She hid him in the North Shore house.
For six months.
Sadie's hands began shaking.
"He lived here."
Claire covered her mouth.
Julian looked around the little house.
Daniel had been alive.
Close enough to Boston to see the skyline on a clear day.
And Julian had never known.
Sadie returned to the letter.
In February 2004, Daniel decided to leave Massachusetts.
Richard had learned he was still alive.
Daniel believed staying near Claire would get her killed.
He left the evidence with Evelyn and created the coded trail in case anything happened to her.
Then came the final paragraph.
Julian,
You are going to blame yourself.
Don't.
You were an idiot, you hit me, and for the record, I absolutely would have hit you back if your left hook hadn't been better than I expected.
But you didn't do this.
Richard did.
Protect Claire.
And if you ever get the chance, live a life that isn't built around protecting everyone else.
You were always terrible at that.
—Daniel
Julian lowered his head.
Sadie had never seen him cry.
Not once.
He didn't make a sound.
But one tear fell onto the page.
Claire walked over.
Then another.
Brother and sister stood together in the boathouse, holding a letter from a man both had spent twenty-three years mourning differently.
Sadie stepped away.
Some grief deserved privacy.
Then Martin called her name.
He was examining the final page.
"There's more."
On the back was a handwritten date.
March 2, 2004.
And below it:
Maggie knows what to do if I don't come back.
Sadie stared at the sentence.
"Maggie?"
---
Maggie O'Connor was making soup when they returned.
She took one look at their faces.
Then at the waterproof case in Julian's hand.
The wooden spoon slipped from her fingers.
"You found it."
Nobody spoke.
Maggie closed her eyes.
Julian's voice was dangerously quiet.
"You knew."
"Yes."
"For twenty-three years?"
Maggie looked at him.
"Not everything."
Sadie stepped forward.
"Were you stealing the objects?"
Maggie nodded.
Claire sank into a chair.
"Why?"
"Because Richard announced he was retiring."
Julian frowned.
Maggie wiped her hands on her apron.
"Daniel told me that if Richard ever tried to leave Boston, it meant he was cleaning up the last of it."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Julian asked.
Maggie laughed bitterly.
"Because twenty-three years ago, I was thirty-five years old with two children and a husband who'd just lost his job. Daniel asked me to help him. I got scared."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I did nothing."
She looked at Claire.
"And then he disappeared."
Maggie had lived with the guilt ever since.
When Richard announced his retirement, she panicked.
She began collecting Daniel's coded objects, intending to find the evidence before Richard could destroy it.
"The train ticket?" Sadie asked.
"I took it."
"The matchbook?"
"Me."
"The cuff link?"
Maggie nodded.
"The record sleeve?"
"Yes."
"The recipe card?"
Maggie hesitated.
"No."
Everyone went still.
Julian's expression changed.
"What?"
"I never touched Evelyn's recipe card."
Sadie's stomach dropped.
"And you didn't put the train ticket in my apartment?"
Maggie stared at her.
"No."
The room fell silent.
There had been two people searching for Daniel's trail.
Maggie.
And someone else.
Julian pulled out his phone.
"Martin."
But Martin was already moving.
Then Ethan called.
Julian answered.
"Talk."
Ethan's voice came through the speaker.
"Richard Hale's private jet filed a flight plan forty minutes ago."
"Destination?"
"Geneva."
Sadie looked at the evidence on the table.
Richard knew.
And he was running.
