"The Mafia Boss’s Secret Cameras" Chapter 8 — Twenty-Three Years of Lies

The first news report appeared at 6:42 the following morning.

CORSINI HOLDINGS LINKED TO HISTORIC MONEY-LAUNDERING INVESTIGATION.

By eight o'clock, three television crews were outside the estate.

By nine, two major clients had suspended their contracts.

By ten, federal investigators had contacted Corsini Holdings.

Julian stood in his study watching the company's stock price fall.

Sadie stood beside him.

"Richard?"

"Almost certainly."

"Can you prove it?"

"Not yet."

She looked at the television.

An old photograph of Daniel appeared beside Julian's younger face.

The headline beneath it made her stomach turn.

MISSING EMPLOYEE MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN FINANCIAL FRAUD.

Sadie grabbed the remote and turned it off.

Julian looked at her.

"You don't have to stay."

She stared at him.

"Seriously?"

"Things may get worse."

"Oh, good. I was worried the armed security guards and news helicopters meant we were having a normal Tuesday."

"Sadie."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"I'm not leaving because Richard Hale decided to turn my missing uncle into a criminal on national television."

Julian studied her.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

"Also, your breakfast is getting cold."

"I have other priorities."

"So do I. One of them is making sure you don't survive on coffee and spite."

For the first time that morning, Julian almost smiled.

The federal investigation changed everything.

Julian's legal team advised him not to contact Richard directly.

Martin remained suspended.

Claire refused to leave the mansion.

And Sadie began reading every document Evelyn had left behind.

She was halfway through a box of old financial statements when she found something strange.

A handwritten note in the margin of a 2003 company report.

Evelyn's handwriting.

Ask Daniel about the duplicate invoices.

Sadie stared at it.

Then she found another.

Richard approved both payments. Why?

A third note appeared two pages later.

Tell Julian after the audit.

Sadie felt a chill.

She gathered the documents and hurried downstairs.

Julian was meeting with his attorneys.

She walked straight into the conference room.

"We need to talk."

One of the lawyers looked offended.

"Miss Quinn, we're in the middle of—"

"Then you'll love this."

She dropped the documents onto the table.

Julian examined them.

His expression changed.

"Where did you find these?"

"Your mother's old financial files."

He read the notes.

Then looked at the lawyers.

"Everybody out."

Within thirty seconds, the room was empty.

Sadie sat opposite him.

"Your mother knew Richard was stealing."

Julian nodded slowly.

"And Daniel was helping her."

"Yes."

She leaned forward.

"What if Daniel wasn't involved in the fraud? What if he was gathering evidence?"

Julian studied the documents.

"That would explain the duplicate invoices."

"And why Richard needed the warehouse destroyed."

Julian looked up.

Sadie could see the realization forming.

"The fire wasn't an accident."

That afternoon, Ethan recovered an old backup drive from Corsini Shipping's archived servers.

Most of the files were corrupted.

But one directory remained intact.

A series of shipping invoices dated July and August 2003.

Every invoice carried Richard Hale's authorization.

The money had moved through construction companies, freight contracts, and offshore accounts.

Nearly twelve million dollars.

Sadie stared at the screen.

"Twelve million?"

"At least," Ethan said.

Julian's expression darkened.

"Richard was using my father's companies."

"Without his knowledge?" Sadie asked.

Julian hesitated.

"I don't know."

She looked at him.

He met her eyes.

"I'm not going to lie to you."

It was a small sentence.

But it mattered.

That evening, Claire came downstairs carrying an old jewelry box.

She placed it in front of Sadie.

"Daniel gave me this before the fire."

Inside was a silver bracelet.

And a photograph.

Daniel and Claire standing on Revere Beach.

Happy.

Young.

Completely unaware of what was coming.

Sadie picked up the photograph.

Then she noticed something written on the back.

Six months.

She frowned.

"What's this?"

Claire looked confused.

"I don't know."

Sadie turned the photograph toward Julian.

"Six months after the fire?"

Julian took it.

His face changed.

He immediately called Ethan.

"Find every possible Daniel Quinn sighting between August 2003 and March 2004."

Ethan worked through the night.

At 3:17 a.m., he found something.

A surveillance photograph from a bank in Portland, Maine.

February 2004.

A man withdrawing cash.

Dark hair.

Crooked grin.

A familiar scar above his eyebrow.

Daniel Quinn.

Alive.

Six months after the warehouse fire.

Sadie stared at the photograph until her eyes hurt.

"That's him."

Julian nodded.

"Yes."

"He's alive."

"He was alive in February 2004."

She looked at him.

"Where did he go?"

Julian didn't answer.

He was staring at the photograph.

At the man he'd spent twenty-three years mourning.

Then Sadie noticed something.

Daniel was holding a newspaper.

She leaned closer.

"Wait."

Julian looked at her.

"What?"

"The newspaper."

She enlarged the image.

The front page was folded.

But the crossword section was visible.

A completed crossword.

Sadie's heart began pounding.

"Your mother kept old newspapers, didn't she?"

Julian frowned.

"Boxes of them."

"And you do the crossword every morning."

"Yes."

She looked at him.

"Why?"

He seemed genuinely confused.

"Because my mother did."

Sadie stared at him.

Then she began laughing.

Not because anything was funny.

Because after weeks of searching for missing objects, hidden codes, and twenty-three-year-old secrets, the answer might have been sitting beside Julian's coffee every single morning.

"Julian."

"What?"

"I think we've been looking at the wrong things."

She grabbed his hand.

"We need to find your mother's old crossword puzzles."

Julian stared at her.

Then at the photograph.

And finally, he understood.

Daniel hadn't hidden his final message in the stolen objects.

Those objects had only been the beginning.

The real secret was hidden in the one thing Julian Corsini had been looking at every morning for twenty-three years.
