"The Maid Who Locked Down the Mafia Boss’s Mansion" Chapter 8 — The Key Between Them
“Stay awake.”
Emma ripped open Don Romano’s shirt and pressed both hands over the wound.
He looked down at the blood ruining his white dress shirt. “You came back.”
“I said stay awake, not state the obvious.”
“You disobey beautifully.”
“You’re flirting because you’ve lost blood.”
“I have wanted to flirt with you for weeks.”
She tightened the pressure. Don hissed.
“Still want to?”
“Less elegantly.”
Federal agents flooded the chapel. Rachel entered behind them, took one look at Don, and called for the tactical medic.
Vincent had escaped through a tunnel beneath the sacristy. By the time agents reached its exit, they found tire tracks and a burning sedan.
Don’s bullet had missed him.
The medic’s examination brought better news. Vincent’s round had passed through muscle below Don’s ribs without striking an organ.
“Hospital,” the medic said.
“No,” Don replied.
Emma leaned closer. “That word has stopped working on me.”
“A public emergency room gives Vincent a location.”
Rachel folded her arms. “For once, he has a point. I have a secure site with a physician.”
“Grace?” Don asked.
“Already there.”
The federal safe house was a plain brick home in Yonkers with plastic flowers on the porch and three surveillance vehicles parked nearby. No marble floors. No armed portraits of Romano ancestors. No staff waiting for Don to speak.
Grace met the ambulance at the door.
She stopped when she saw the bandage around her father’s torso.
Don stepped down without assistance, though the effort drained the color from his face. “It looks worse than it is.”
Grace struck him in the stomach.
He folded with a curse.
Emma caught his arm. “She disagrees.”
Grace hit his uninjured side more carefully, then wrapped both arms around him.
Don lowered his face into her hair.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Grace held on.
Inside, the doctor cleaned and closed the wound while Rachel interviewed Marcus and Rosa. Emma sat at the kitchen table with Ben’s messages open on her phone.
No new message had arrived.
Don entered wearing borrowed sweatpants and a gray T-shirt that strained across his shoulders. Without the suit, he looked less like an institution and more like a wounded man who had not slept in years.
“The doctor told you to lie down,” Emma said.
“He also told me not to get shot. His advice arrives late.”
He sat across from her.
For a while, neither spoke.
“Angela was planning to leave me,” Don said at last.
“Vincent wanted to hurt you.”
“That does not make it false.”
Emma turned the brass key on the table. “Would you have let her go?”
His answer took too long.
“Three years ago? No.” He looked toward the room where Grace slept. “I would have called it protection. I would have surrounded her with guards until leaving became impossible. Then I would have hated her for feeling trapped.”
“And now?”

“Now I know a locked door is still locked when the man outside claims he loves you.”
Emma felt that truth move between them.
“You locked my door,” she said.
“Yes.”
“You watched my apartment.”
“Yes.”
“You hired me to draw out my brother.”
“Yes.”
Each answer was clean. No excuses. Somehow that hurt more.
“I should leave you,” she whispered.
“Yes.”
She looked up sharply.
Don’s face was rigid, but his eyes were not. “If staying is not your choice, I do not want it.”
“That may be the first decent thing you’ve said to me.”
“I have had a difficult night.”
Despite herself, she laughed.
His gaze dropped to her mouth.
The room changed.
Emma could hear the refrigerator hum and an agent walking across the porch. She could smell antiseptic on Don’s skin. He reached across the table, then stopped before touching her.
“May I?”
Consent from Don Romano sounded more intimate than any command.
Emma took his hand and placed it against her cheek.
His palm was warm, rougher than she expected. She turned her face into it for one breath, then leaned across the table and kissed him.
He remained still, giving her time to withdraw.
She did not.
His free hand settled at her waist, careful of nothing except her choice. The kiss deepened—grief, anger, and weeks of restrained desire colliding without erasing any of them.
When she pulled back, his forehead rested against hers.
“This does not forgive you,” she said.
“I know.”
“It does not make me yours.”
“No.” His thumb moved along her cheek. “But I would like another.”
“Survive the night.”
“Cruel woman.”
Rachel entered the kitchen holding her coat. “I hate to interrupt whatever constitutional crisis this is, but Grand Central opens in four hours.”
Emma straightened. “You heard Rosa?”
“I hear most things in my safe houses.” Rachel looked at the key. “There are private safe-deposit facilities near the terminal. Angela rented one through a Delaware trust. We’ve watched it for three years. We could never open it.”
“Why didn’t you contact me?”
“Because Ben Carter said the key was safest with someone who did not know its value.”
Emma’s hope sharpened into anger. “You know where my brother is.”
Rachel’s expression revealed nothing. “I know he was alive when he entered federal protection.”
“Was?”
“Open the box.”
At 6:10 a.m., commuters flowed beneath Grand Central Terminal’s painted constellations, carrying coffee and briefcases as though the night had not nearly broken open New York’s most feared family.
Don wore a dark coat over his bandages. Emma had argued against him coming.
He had replied that Angela had left the truth for both of them.
Rachel led them through the Lexington Passage and across the street to a discreet vault company occupying the lower floor of a prewar building. A federal court order persuaded the manager to ignore the unusual hour.

Box 317 waited behind three steel doors.
Emma inserted the brass key.
It turned smoothly.
Inside lay a red leather folder, a flash drive, and an envelope addressed in Angela’s handwriting.
DON—READ THIS WITH EMMA CARTER.
Don did not touch it until Emma nodded.
The red folder contained port numbers, container manifests, dates, and photographs. Emma saw women crowded behind steel doors. Beside several shipments were Vincent’s initials and Don’s stolen authorization code.
Rachel exhaled. “This can dismantle the trafficking network.”
“And Romano Holdings,” Don said.
“Parts of it.”
He closed the folder. “Then dismantle them.”
Rachel studied him, perhaps searching for a negotiation. None came.
Emma opened Angela’s letter.
Don,
If this box has been opened, Vincent has forced the family to choose between truth and survival. He will tell you they are different things. Do not believe him.
You will want to punish Ben Carter. Don’t. He risked his life to move the first copy of the manifests. He did not touch my car. He tried to save me after Vincent discovered us.
Emma’s vision blurred. She kept reading.
Ben is alive. The federal prosecutor hid him because men carrying your authorization were hunting him. He believes you sent them. Given the empire we built, he has every reason to believe it.
Don’s face went still.
Emma knows what it means to love someone and still demand the truth from him. That is why Vincent fears her. If she ever stands beside you, do not mistake her courage for obedience.
Emma looked at Don.
He did not reach for her. He let her decide the distance.
She unfolded the final page.
Trust Emma, not the family. And when Ben comes back, listen before you command.
Below Angela’s signature was a handwritten date and a meeting place.
Rachel took out her phone. “That location was activated ten minutes ago.”
Emma’s heart slammed against her ribs. “By whom?”
Rachel turned the screen toward them.
A live security image showed a thin man with brown hair and a scar through his right eyebrow waiting in an empty church.
Ben Carter was alive.
And he was holding a gun.
