"The Woman Who Sat in Sofia’s Place" Chapter 9: Twelve Voices
Chapter 9: Twelve Voices
Vera’s transfer never took place.
Price contacted the official overseeing the outside investigation, and the separation order remained in effect while the housing decision was reviewed. Pierce protested that investigators were interfering with ordinary prison management. Claire asked her to put the objection in writing.
By breakfast, the women in Block C knew Vera was not coming back that day. The news traveled through the meal line faster than any announcement. Tess collected her full tray and carried it to Mina’s table.
Elena stayed in an interview room. She had asked to be kept apart from the women giving statements, so no one could say she coached them after the yard confrontation. When Claire needed a fact checked, she brought Elena the question without revealing what another witness had said.
The first six interviews yielded two direct accounts of Vera taking meal tickets, three accounts of food withheld after women refused, and one account of Holt handing Vera an envelope. The witness could not identify the envelope as Sofia’s. Claire wrote that limitation into her report.
The seventh woman described a night when she heard Sofia arguing in the laundry corridor. She remembered the lights going out, but could not see who opened the door. Mina could identify Holt’s voice. Their accounts supported different parts of the event without turning either woman into an eyewitness to what happened inside.
Elena welcomed the care. A story made stronger by guessing would break the moment someone asked a precise question.
Tess gave her formal statement after receiving written notice of her new housing assignment. She described the meal tickets and the threat that followed. Then she surprised the interviewer by telling her about Elena’s apple.
“She offered it,” Tess said. “I didn’t take it because I thought Vera would make me pay for it. I want that included.”
Claire included it. Fear had made the theft effective even when Vera was not in the room.
The youngest woman from Vera’s group was named Ruth Calder. She asked to speak after seeing Tess moved. Ruth admitted she had carried food away for Vera and passed notes to Holt. She did not ask to be excused. She described the first time Vera ordered her to eat a roll stolen from another woman while Holt watched from the wall.
“Why did you set down the apple yesterday?” Claire asked.
“Because Elena said Vera could choose,” Ruth replied. “It was the first time I realized I could, too.”
Ruth’s statement identified the envelope she had seen Holt pass to Vera. It had the same cream-colored paper Sofia used in the letter Claire had recovered. Ruth could not remember an address. She remembered a stain on the lower corner, shaped like a thumbprint.
Claire compared her description with the photographed envelope. The stain was there. It did not prove when or why Vera held it, but it gave investigators a reason to examine the handoff records and question Holt again.

The kitchen worker came forward that afternoon. She had been afraid of losing her job. She brought copies of meal tallies she had kept at home after noticing that numbers on the official sheets were changed. Claire did not promise that coming forward would erase her own failure to report what she saw. She took the copies and documented their dates.
One copied sheet listed a supplement Janine said had never reached the infirmary. Another showed Tess marked as having received fruit on the morning Elena had watched Vera take the last tray. Each discrepancy was small enough to be dismissed alone. Together they showed why the women had struggled to prove what was happening: the records made deprivation look like ordinary service.
At the end of the second day, twelve women had given statements. Others had declined. Elena asked that their refusals be respected and that no one be identified in an interview summary merely because Sofia had written down a name.
Mina was the twelfth.
She sat across from Claire with a dry coat folded on her lap. This time she spoke about more than the outage. She said she had seen Sofia find the opened letter, had watched her hide the list, and had heard her apologize to a woman whose name Vera learned from it.
“I told Sofia I didn’t want to be involved,” Mina said. “She stopped asking me. After she went to medical, I wished she’d asked once more.”
Claire left room for the silence before asking, “What did you see after she returned?”
“Bruises on her hands. She said she’d held onto the laundry door when they tried to move her.” Mina drew a breath. “I didn’t see how she got them. I need that written the way I said it.”
Claire read the sentence back. Mina approved it.
Elena waited outside while Mina signed. When the door opened, Mina looked exhausted, but she walked over on her own.
“I did it,” she said.
“You did.”
“It doesn’t change what I didn’t do for Sofia.”
“No.” Elena held her gaze. “She would have wanted you to have the choice now.”
The investigators began matching the statements to records. The meal tallies, medical inventory, housing changes, and mail register formed a pattern across months. Vera had enforced the threats. Holt had been present often enough that he could no longer describe each incident as something he had missed. Pierce’s role remained uncertain. Her initials appeared on the mail correction and a fragment from the storage room, but neither item alone established what she knew.
That evening Claire brought Elena a new document: Sofia’s medical intake record from the night of the outage. Elena expected to see the bruises Mina had described. They were noted, briefly. Beside the time Sofia arrived, someone had written that no staff member accompanied her.
Mina had watched Holt lead Sofia toward medical.
“Who entered this?” Elena asked.
Claire turned the page so Elena could see the signature. The nurse had signed the clinical notes. The line about Sofia arriving alone had been added later, beneath Pierce’s initials.
Elena stared at the altered entry. It did not answer what had happened to Sofia. It showed that someone in authority had taken care to change the account of how she reached the infirmary.
“Preserve the original,” Elena said. “And ask Pierce who told her Sofia came alone.”
