"The Woman Who Sat in Sofia’s Place" Chapter 5: The Witness Who Stayed Quiet
Chapter 5: The Witness Who Stayed Quiet
Vera met Elena at the yard door the next morning.
“I hear you’ve been collecting names.”
Elena stepped into the cold without answering. The yard was only half full. The far fence lay beyond the basketball hoop, in view of two cameras and the officers on the wall.
“That paper won’t help you,” Vera said, keeping pace. “Your sister thought it would help her too.”
Elena stopped. “You read her letter.”
Vera’s scar pulled with her smile. “Maybe she read it to me.”
“Sofia wouldn’t have trusted you.”
“Trust had nothing to do with it.”
An officer ordered them to keep moving. Vera crossed the yard, satisfied with the hurt she had caused. Elena went to the fence. She had wanted Vera to know the page existed; she had not expected her to admit knowing the letter’s contents so readily.
Mina joined her after the second count. They stood a few feet apart, facing the basketball game.
“I can’t promise what happens if you talk,” Elena said. “I can promise I won’t use your name without telling you what it means.”
Mina kept her eyes on the players. “Sofia said something like that.”
“She was brave.”
“She was scared every night.” Mina pressed her gloved hands against the fence. “She came to me after she found the letter opened. I hid that list in a coat. I told her to stop writing. She said Holt had already seen enough names to punish people whether she stopped or not.”
Elena waited.
“A few nights later, the lights went out during an electrical fault. No cameras in the laundry corridor. Holt opened the door upstairs. Vera went in with him.”
“Did you see Sofia?”
“I heard her. She said she wouldn’t tell them where the page was. Holt told Vera to search the laundry. Sofia was taken to medical afterward.”
Elena gripped the fence. The official account said Sofia had reported feeling unwell and died days later of complications from an untreated infection. Elena knew the record; she did not know what had happened during those missing hours.
“Did you see anyone hurt her?”
“No.” Mina finally turned. “I need you to hear that. I can tell you where Holt was and what I heard. I won’t say I saw something I didn’t.”
“That’s enough to begin with.”
“It wasn’t enough for me then.”
Mina had stayed quiet when Sofia was alive. Elena could see the shame in her face, but shame did not make her testimony less valuable. It made the decision to speak now harder.
“I’m going to ask other women,” Elena said. “Some may remember that night. I can help them give their own accounts if they want to.”
“They’ll think you’re another woman who’ll leave them here with Vera.”
“Then I’ll show them something they can decide for themselves.”
At lunch, Elena went to Tess. She did not ask about the cut lip. She described the six names on Sofia’s page and asked whether Tess recognized the dates.

Tess counted backward on her fingers. “That first one was the week Vera made me hand over my meal tickets.”
“You can stop me if you don’t want to talk.”
“She said I owed her for a blanket.” Tess’s voice shook. “I’d never borrowed one.”
“Who gave her the tickets?”
“I did. Holt watched.”
Elena slid a blank grievance form across the table. She had obtained it from a dispenser beside the dining room exit. “You decide whether to fill this out. You can also keep it for now.”
Tess looked down at the paper. “Vera sees me carrying that, she’ll know.”
“Then leave it here. I can ask again when you’re ready.”
Tess pushed the form back. “She took one from Janine, too. Janine’s in the infirmary. Ask her.”
It was the first lead Tess had offered freely. Elena thanked her and took the form away.
For two days Elena worked through small, verifiable details: meal times, who signed the kitchen tally, which women had been moved after complaining, which laundry shifts put Holt on the upper walkway. She did not ask anyone to guess why Sofia had died. She asked what they had seen, and she kept her questions separate from their answers.
Vera noticed. On the third evening, Elena found her blanket soaked and her paperback returned to the bunk with its cover torn away. The disciplinary notice lay on the floor. Someone had circled Holt’s signature in red ink.
Mina appeared outside the cell while Elena wrung out the blanket.
“They want you to know they can come in whenever they like,” Mina said.
“They came looking for another page.”
“There might be one.”
Elena looked up.
“Sofia copied parts of her letter before she tried to mail it. She said if anyone took the envelope, she wanted another account somewhere they wouldn’t expect.” Mina hesitated. “I never found it.”
“Did she tell you where?”
“She said to think about what Vera never touches.”
Elena remembered the apple Holt had thrown away. Vera stole lunches in public, but Sofia had kept giving apples to hungry women, leaving them on napkins and beside bunks. A note could have traveled with one of them. The idea was too vague to risk anyone’s safety on yet.
“We can look later,” Elena said. “First I need to make sure you can speak without Vera reaching you.”
Mina breathed out. “You talk like somebody has a plan.”
“I’m working on one.”
The next morning Tess accepted a blank form. She did not fill it out. She folded it into her pocket and walked past Vera without lowering her eyes.
Elena watched from across the room. It was a small choice, and Vera had seen it. By supper, Elena’s name had been crossed off the next day’s recreation list again.
She took the altered schedule to the duty officer and requested the reason in writing. He could not find one. He restored her yard access while Holt was off shift.
Elena carried the new schedule upstairs. Tomorrow she would be in the yard. Mina had agreed to tell the truth. Vera would come to stop Elena from asking for it.
This time, Elena intended to have witnesses ready when she did.
