"The Woman Who Sat in Sofia’s Place" Chapter 1: Sofia’s Bench
Chapter 1: Sofia’s Bench
The first thing Vera Sokolov stole from Elena Moretti was her lunch.
The second was the illusion that anyone in the yard would stop her.
Elena had been inside Grayhaven Correctional Facility for four hours when she carried a plastic tray through the double doors. The yard smelled of damp concrete and burned coffee. On the far side of the fence, bare trees shook in a cold March wind.
She had taken an apple, a small roll, and a sealed cup of water. The intake officer had called it a light lunch. Elena had called it enough.
She stopped beside a metal bench under a camera with a cracked plastic cover.
Someone caught her sleeve.
“Anywhere but there,” the woman said.
She was perhaps fifty, with tired eyes and a blue cardigan under her orange jacket. Her name tag read OKAFOR.
Elena looked at the empty bench. “It’s taken?”
“It belongs to somebody who thinks everything belongs to her.”
Elena set down her tray.
The woman’s fingers tightened. “I’m trying to help you.”
“I know.” Elena met her gaze. “Thank you.”
She sat anyway.
The woman let go as if Elena’s sleeve had burned her. Across the yard, two inmates glanced toward the bench and abruptly turned their backs.
Elena placed the apple beside her knee on a folded napkin. She had seen a photograph of this bench six weeks ago. In the picture, her sister Sofia sat at its far end, squinting into the sun. Someone had drawn a circle around the fence behind her in black pen.
Sofia had written beneath it:
This is where they decide who gets to eat.
It was the last photograph Elena had received from her.
She picked up the roll but did not bite it. Camera over the yard door. One above the recreation cage. A blind angle under the maintenance awning. A correctional officer at the wall, drinking from a paper cup while watching an inmate drag a trash bin across the concrete.
The officer’s badge said HOLT.
He looked at Elena, then at the bench, and lowered his eyes.
A laugh rose near the basketball hoop. Four women were coming toward her. Three kept a cautious half step behind the fourth.
Vera Sokolov was taller than Elena had expected. The intake photographs had captured her scar but not the way the pale mark pulled at the corner of her mouth when she smiled. She walked without hurrying, confident that the yard would make room for her.
It did.
“You picked a good seat,” Vera said. “Especially for someone who got here this morning.”
Elena held the roll loosely. “It was empty.”
One of Vera’s companions laughed. Vera did not.
“New women pay for the privilege.”
“Who collects?”
Vera’s eyes narrowed. “I do.”
“Then I’ll need a receipt.”
The laugh this time came from several benches away. It died quickly. Holt lifted his cup to his mouth without drinking.

Vera took the roll out of Elena’s hand.
Elena could have held on. She let her fingers open instead and watched who reacted. The youngest of Vera’s companions stared at the ground. The woman in the cardigan, now standing near the fence, pressed her lips together. Holt had turned toward the administration windows.
“Give it back,” Elena said.
Vera held up the roll. “You were just asking for a receipt.”
“That’s my food.”
“Not anymore.”
Elena stood. At once the space around them widened. Two women hurried toward the doors. Vera’s companions spread out, blocking the easiest path past the bench.
Elena did not step toward Vera. “Does he always let you take it?”
Her glance was brief, but Holt saw it. His jaw hardened.
Vera followed her eyes. “You really are new.”
She threw the roll to the youngest woman in her group. The woman caught it against her chest and looked miserable.
“Eat,” Vera told her.
The woman hesitated.
“I said eat.”
She tore off a piece. Elena saw the fear in her face, and something else: hunger. Vera had chosen her carefully.
Elena picked up her apple. “You made your point.”
“Did I?”
“You can take lunch in front of an officer.” Elena glanced at Holt again. “That seems like a point worth remembering.”
For the first time, Vera’s smile faltered. She stepped close enough that Elena could smell peppermint on her breath.
“Remember this, then. Tomorrow you give me what I ask for before I have to come over.”
“What happens if I don’t?”
Vera looked past Elena toward the woman in the cardigan. “Ask Mina.”
She walked away with her companions, taking the roll and leaving the whole yard to pretend nothing had happened.
Elena sat back down. She did not eat the apple. Her pulse had climbed, though she kept her hand still on her knee.
Mina approached only after Holt went inside.
“You should have listened,” she said quietly.
“The woman with Vera. The one she made eat. What’s her name?”
Mina stared at her. “That’s what you want to know?”
“She looked hungry.”
“Her name is Tess. Vera cut her off from the kitchen line last week.” Mina glanced toward the camera. “And I shouldn’t be telling you that.”
Elena moved the apple toward her. “For Tess.”
Mina did not take it. “You think one apple changes anything?”
“No.”
At the administration window, the gray curtain shifted. Elena had spotted the movement twice since she sat down. Someone was watching the bench from inside.
“I think someone needs to tell me who decides whether Tess eats tomorrow.”
Mina’s expression closed. “If you’re smart, you’ll forget you asked.”
The yard doors buzzed. Mina walked away, and Elena carried the apple inside untouched.
At the threshold, Holt stopped her for an inspection that lasted longer than necessary. He searched the napkin, checked the apple for damage, and handed it back.
“Pick another seat tomorrow, Moretti,” he said.
He had read her name tag. Still, hearing him say it made her think of Sofia in this same doorway.
“Was that the advice you gave my sister?” Elena asked.
Holt’s hand froze on the gate latch.
For one sharp second he looked directly at her. Then he opened the gate and called for the next woman to come through.
Elena crossed the threshold knowing two things: Holt remembered Sofia, and he was frightened that Elena had asked.
