"The Woman They Poured Milk On" Chapter 9: Victor's Version
Chapter 9: Victor's Version
“Caleb ordered his own records erased?” Elena asked.
Reed did not correct her. “That's what Hale claims. He says Voss was alive when the order was issued.”
Elena gripped the edge of the table. A week earlier she had believed Caleb died years ago. Now Victor wanted to use him as the architect of the concealment.
“Has Victor shown you the order?”
“He says he can identify the original. He wants terms discussed before he hands it over.”
“Then you have a claim from a man who told me Caleb was dead.”
“We know.” Reed closed his notes. “We want your account of anything he said about that order.”
Elena remembered a meeting during the final month of her consultancy. Victor had stood over her desk while she removed the names column. He had said, “The people behind those figures asked us to keep them off the final copy.” She had accepted the plural without asking who had spoken.
“He never named Caleb,” she said. “He said people asked him. That's all I can testify to.”
“Were you present when anyone made the request?”
“No.”
The interview ended with less certainty than it began. Elena returned to her cell and found Ruth's bed empty, its blanket folded squarely. The empty space made Ruth's choice to leave feel final. Elena wrote an apology on a sheet of paper, then stopped. Ruth had not invited a letter. She tucked the page into her book.
Two days later, Price called her back. Leah Hart had confirmed she heard Victor demand the column's removal. Leah also remembered him saying Mara would “take the heat” if anyone asked why the building remained open. It was useful testimony about Victor's intent, but Leah could not establish who first requested the change.
“Has Hale given you the order?” Elena asked.
“His attorney provided a copy,” Price said. “We're tracing its origin.”
The document authorized a contractor to stop retaining routine access records for one entrance while preserving records for the main gate. Its signature was difficult to read on the copy. Victor identified the signer as Caleb Voss.
Elena examined the date. It was three weeks after the accident Victor had described to her. If genuine, the document made his story about Caleb's death false. It did not make his new account true.
“Can I see the attachment?” she asked.
“What attachment?”
“This refers to a service schedule. There should be one. I used to process these.”
Price looked at Reed. He left to call the contractor.
Later, a fuller copy arrived. The schedule listed two entrances: the loading gate for commercial deliveries and a side entrance used for maintenance. Victor's copy had omitted the second page, where the contractor acknowledged a separate instruction to retain a duplicate of the side entrance log.
“Who gave that instruction?” Elena asked.
“The contractor is looking for the signed original,” Price said.

Mara asked to speak with investigators the next morning. Her attorney attended. Elena did not hear the interview, but she learned its result: Mara admitted she had demanded Tessa search for the list. She said she feared Victor would discover Ruth had hidden it, and that she had tried to find it before Victor's people did. She also admitted arranging for someone to get the incorrect reference from Elena's notebook and send it outside.
Elena remembered Mara's hand closing around her wrist in the dining hall. “Please,” she had whispered then. The plea had been real; so had the stolen notebook and the threat to Tessa. Elena would not convert one into an excuse for the other. She asked Price to include both in any account Mara gave, with dates, rather than accepting a story in which every cruel act had secretly been protection.
That did not turn her into an ally. It made her accountable for her threats and for passing information to Victor. Mara's account of protecting Ruth still needed corroboration.
“Why tell you now?” Elena asked Price.
“She says she heard what Hale is claiming about Caleb. She wants to correct the record.”
“Or correct the part that hurts her.”
“That too.”
Elena asked for the dates of the side entrance fees. She compared them with the seven dates from Tessa's strip. The first six came before Caleb's supposed death, when several workers had used the site. The seventh came last month. The strip might have recorded sightings, payments, or something else. Its heading was still missing.
Then she examined the storage fee in her draft. It increased in the same month the contractor was told to retain the duplicate log. A higher bill for preserving records made more sense than a higher bill for concealing them.
“If Caleb signed the instruction,” she said, “Victor is using one sentence from it to make him look like he destroyed the evidence. The contractor was ordered to keep a second copy.”
Price nodded. “We need the original to know who signed both instructions.”
The contractor delivered it that evening. Price brought Elena into the interview room to compare the signature with samples from the warehouse files. The signer was Caleb Voss. Beneath his name was the reason for the duplicate:
Disputed deliveries. Preserve independent entry record pending review.
Elena asked to compare the original with the photocopy Victor supplied. The line explaining the duplicate was absent from his version because his copy ended above the contractor's acknowledgment. It might have been an incomplete scan rather than deliberate cropping, but Victor had represented it as the entire order. Reed added the discrepancy to his notes. Elena could see how easily a partial page could turn an act of preservation into an act of destruction.
Caleb had helped hide the routine log from Victor's access. He had also made sure another copy survived. The act could still have violated his duties, and Elena could not know what else Caleb had done. But it was not the simple destruction Victor described.
Reed turned to the final page. “There's a second authorization. Different date.”
It ordered the contractor to terminate the duplicate, too. Elena recognized the handwriting in the margin from the draft reconciliation she had signed years earlier.
The order had been issued long after Caleb supposedly died, and shortly before Ruth began moving between facilities. Elena checked the date twice. Whatever Ruth had said about saving the list, she had also signed a document that could have destroyed the only independent record of her brother's movements.
The name at the bottom belonged to Ruth Voss.
