"The Wife Who Watched Me Drown" Chapter 1: The Empty Berth
Chapter 1: The Empty Berth
The first sign that someone had changed Elias Ward’s plans was the empty berth.
His yacht was supposed to be tied up outside the harbor office until Friday. Instead, its slip held only two wet mooring lines and a white rectangle where its nameplate had shielded the dock from years of sun.
Elias stood at the edge of the pier with a paper cup of coffee growing cold in his hand.
“Where’s the
Meridian
?”
The dock attendant looked up from a coil of rope. “South yard. Took her over at six.”
“Who did?”
“Captain Brooks.”
Owen had captained the
Meridian
for seven years. He would move her for maintenance, a storm, or a direct instruction from Elias. There was no storm in the forecast.
Elias called him.
Owen answered on the third ring. “I was about to call you.”
“That’s rarely a sentence I enjoy.”
“I got a revised itinerary from your office. They wanted the hull checked before Sunday’s trip.”
“What Sunday trip?”
A pause followed.
“The one you approved,” Owen said.
Elias watched a gull land on the vacant piling. “Send me what they gave you.”
The email reached him before he got back to his car. It carried his company logo, his assistant’s old email signature, and a digital approval bearing his name. The
Meridian
would leave Sunday morning, circle the outer islands, and return after sunset. No guests were listed except Elias and his wife.
He had not approved any of it.
At Ward Coastal, he went straight to his office and shut the door. The itinerary had been forwarded through an account belonging to Mara, an assistant who had left eight months earlier. Someone had kept her credentials active.
Elias called his operations manager, Beth Calder.
“Can you see who accessed Mara’s account?”
“Probably. Why?”
“Do it quietly. And pull every document signed in my name this week.”
Beth had worked beside him since his first hotel had been a half-renovated building with a leaking roof. She did not ask whether he was overreacting.
Twenty minutes later, she came in carrying her laptop.
“There are four routine approvals,” she said. “And this.”
She turned the screen toward him.
It was an agreement to sell the East Point Marina, the property that had given Ward Coastal its first real foothold on the shore. Elias recognized the buyer’s company. Six months earlier, he had rejected its offer in person.
The sale price was low enough to make his stomach tighten.
“That signature isn’t mine.”
“I thought so.” Beth enlarged the final page. “The approval came from your account at 11:46 last night. Whoever did it also requested a certified copy.”
“Can we stop it?”
“The agreement still has conditions to clear. I’m checking exactly where it stands.”
“Keep the original audit record. Make a separate copy for me.”
Beth studied him. “Elias, what’s going on?”

He could have told her about the itinerary. He could have told her that his wife had spent the previous evening asking, with unusual persistence, whether he intended to be on the yacht this weekend.
But he had only two suspicious documents and a feeling he did not want to name.
“I don’t know yet.”
At noon, Selene called.
“Are you coming home for lunch?”
Her voice was warm. She had once called him every afternoon during the years when lunch meant a sandwich eaten over construction invoices. Back then, she had known the names of every contractor on his first hotel.
“Running late,” he said.
“You always are.”
“Did you arrange something on the boat for Sunday?”
There was a brief silence. He heard glass touch a countertop.
“I was going to surprise you,” she said. “Just the two of us. You’ve barely been home.”
“Where are we going?”
“I thought we could decide when we get there.”
“Owen has an itinerary.”
“Well, I had to tell him something.” Her laugh was light. “Have I ruined it?”
Elias looked at the sale agreement on his desk.
“Only a little.”
After they hung up, he called Owen again.
“Who handed you the itinerary?”
“It came by email. Mrs. Ward called afterward to confirm the departure time.”
“Did she ask you to take anyone else?”
“No. But there’s something odd about the route. The southern leg puts us well beyond the usual sightseeing run. I asked about it. She said you wanted privacy.”
Elias asked Owen to send him the route coordinates, then told him to keep their conversation between them.
By midafternoon, Beth had found the account access. Mara’s old credentials had been used from a laptop connected to the guest network at the Wards’ house. That narrowed the location. It did not tell Elias who had been holding the laptop.
He drove home before Selene expected him.
Their house overlooked a narrow strip of beach. Twelve years earlier, they had rented an apartment above a laundromat and gone to the shore in winter because the parking was free. Selene had stood beside him in a borrowed coat, pointing at houses on the bluff and asking which one he would buy her.
He had bought this one.
As Elias entered, Selene came down the stairs in bare feet, her hair still damp from a shower.
“You’re early.”
“I wanted to see you.”
Her smile reached him a beat late. Then she crossed the hall and kissed his cheek.
“Good. I was beginning to forget what that looked like.”
At dinner, he mentioned East Point as though the property were still an ordinary item on his desk.
“Another buyer called today,” he said.
Selene set down her fork. “Are you considering selling?”
“I turned them down.”
“Maybe you should hear what they’re offering now.”
“What changed?”
“I thought you were tired of running the marina.” She took a sip of wine. “You said it never made enough money for the trouble.”
He had said that once, after spending a December night replacing a burst pipe. He had also told her he would never sell the place. It was where his company began.
“Who have you been talking to about it?” he asked.
“No one. Why?”
He held her gaze. “You sound as if you’ve heard their offer.”
“Elias.” She smiled, but her fingers tightened around the stem of her glass. “I’m trying to have dinner with my husband.”
He let the question rest. She shifted to Sunday’s trip, describing a chef she wanted to bring aboard. He said they could discuss it tomorrow.
Later, while she showered, Elias checked the home security log. The guest network had connected to a laptop named A-VALE-MACBOOK at 11:42 the previous night.
He knew the name.
Adrian Vale had handled investment deals for Ward Coastal until Elias ended their contract in May. Adrian knew how much East Point was worth. He also knew which company had tried to buy it.
Elias saved the network record beside the forged agreement. He was closing his laptop when Selene called from the bedroom.
“Are you coming up?”
“In a minute.”
“Don’t work all night.”
“I won’t.”
He opened the Sunday itinerary again. Beside the southern leg, in the captain’s notes, someone had added an instruction:
Pause engines at waypoint four.
There was no sightseeing stop at waypoint four. On the chart Owen had sent, it lay in open water, well out of sight of the shore.
