"The Mafia King Hunted a Hacker… Then Found His Five-Year-Old Son" Chapter 9 — Burn the Empire

At 8:06 the next morning, Adrian Moretti was offered a choice.

Save his empire.

Or save Evelyn.

The offer came from Vincent's attorney.

Adrian sat at the head of the conference table on the forty-eighth floor of Moretti Tower.

Nico stood beside the windows.

Evelyn sat across from Adrian.

Daniel Cross and two federal attorneys occupied the other end.

Theo was not there.

That had required three arguments, one confiscated laptop, and Margaret physically blocking the library door.

Adrian considered it a victory.

Vincent's attorney slid a folder across the table.

"My client is prepared to cooperate."

Daniel laughed.

"Your client is facing conspiracy, financial fraud, attempted kidnapping, obstruction, and enough additional charges to keep my office busy for months."

"Which is why we're negotiating."

Adrian opened the folder.

His expression didn't change.

Evelyn watched him.

"What is it?"

The attorney answered.

"Records."

"Of what?"

"The Moretti organization."

Adrian slowly turned a page.

Companies.

Payments.

Old accounts.

Transactions made years before Moretti Holdings began cleaning up its operations.

Some were Vincent's.

Some weren't.

Some carried Adrian's authorization.

Not because he had committed every act described.

Because years ago, authorization inside the Moretti organization had meant something very different from authorization inside a public corporation.

Daniel looked at Adrian.

"How bad?"

Adrian closed the folder.

"Bad enough."

The attorney smiled.

"My client anticipated this possibility."

Nico's voice was cold.

"What does he want?"

"Protection."

"No."

"And the government's case against Evelyn Carter."

Adrian looked up.

Evelyn frowned.

"What case?"

The attorney slid another document across the table.

Five-year-old access records.

Hawthorne.

Evelyn read the first page.

Her face changed.

"No."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What?"

"These logs were altered."

The attorney shrugged.

"Can you prove that?"

Evelyn flipped through the pages.

Someone had reconstructed the original narrative.

Evelyn Carter entered the Moretti network.

Evelyn copied confidential files.

Evelyn moved financial information.

Evelyn disappeared.

On paper, she was exactly what Adrian had believed she was five years ago.

A thief.

A corporate spy.

A criminal.

"Vincent kept the original forged evidence," Evelyn whispered.

"Apparently," Nico said.

The attorney folded his hands.

"My client will testify that Ms. Carter acted independently."

Adrian's eyes became cold.

"And in return?"

"Mr. Moretti acknowledges that Ms. Carter was responsible for the Hawthorne breach."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

The attorney looked at him.

"You haven't heard the rest."

"I don't need to."

"You should."

He pushed another page toward Adrian.

"If you refuse, these records go to federal prosecutors, regulators, the press, and every financial institution currently doing business with Moretti Holdings."

Nico swore quietly.

The attorney continued.

"Your board will remove you. Your lenders will freeze credit. Your partners will run. Moretti Holdings may survive."

He paused.

"You won't control it."

Adrian leaned back.

"So Vincent wants me to sacrifice Evelyn to protect the company."

"Mr. Vincent Moretti believes everyone should take responsibility for their choices."

Evelyn laughed.

It was sharp and humorless.

"That's almost impressive."

The attorney stood.

"You have until five."

He looked at Adrian.

"Five years ago, you believed she betrayed you."

His gaze shifted toward Evelyn.

"All my client is asking is that you continue believing it publicly."

Adrian said nothing.

The attorney left.

The door closed.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel stood.

"I need to make calls."

He collected his files.

At the door, he stopped.

"For what it's worth, altered logs can be challenged."

"Can they be disproved?" Evelyn asked.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"Maybe."

That was answer enough.

He left.

Nico followed to speak with the legal team.

Adrian and Evelyn were alone.

She stared at the folder.

"You should do it."

Adrian looked at her.

"No."

"Listen first."

"No."

"Adrian."

He stood.

"Five years ago, I listened to everyone except you."

"This isn't about us."

"It is exactly about us."

"This company employs thousands of people."

"I know."

"Hotels. Shipping. Real estate. Employees who have nothing to do with Vincent or your family history."

"I know."

"If those records come out—"

"They're coming out."

Evelyn stopped.

Adrian picked up the folder.

"What?"

"I'm releasing them."

"All of them?"

"All of them."

"Adrian, some of those records implicate you."

"Yes."

"You could lose everything."

"Not everything."

She stared at him.

He stepped closer.

"I already lost you once for this empire."

His voice was quiet.

"I'm not doing it again."

Evelyn looked away.

"Don't turn this into some grand romantic sacrifice."

"It isn't."

"Then what is it?"

"Cleaning up what should have been cleaned up years ago."

"You don't know what happens after that."

"No."

"You could lose the company."

"Yes."

"Your money."

"Some of it."

"Your reputation."

Adrian almost smiled.

"My reputation wasn't excellent to begin with."

She didn't smile.

"Adrian."

He reached for her hand.

She let him.

That alone felt enormous.

"I spent five years thinking you chose betrayal over me."

His thumb moved over her fingers.

"You spent five years thinking being near me could get our son killed."

Evelyn swallowed.

"We were both living inside a lie Vincent created."

He looked at the folder.

"I'm done protecting it."

At 4:42 p.m., the Moretti Holdings board assembled.

At 4:47, Adrian's attorneys arrived.

At 4:51, Daniel Cross returned with federal prosecutors.

At 4:55, Vincent's attorney called.

Adrian declined it.

At 4:59, Evelyn stood beside him in the executive conference room.

Nico asked one final time.

"Sure?"

Adrian looked through the glass walls at Manhattan.

Moretti.

The name had controlled his entire life.

His grandfather built the organization.

His father expanded it.

Adrian inherited its enemies before he was old enough to understand why they hated him.

For years, power had meant keeping everything.

Every secret.

Every weakness.

Every piece of leverage.

Then a five-year-old boy wearing a dinosaur backpack had walked into his life and proved Adrian didn't understand power at all.

"Send it."

Nico pressed the key.

Every document went out simultaneously.

Federal investigators.

Regulators.

Independent auditors.

The board.

Adrian's attorneys.

No edited version.

No protected names.

No Moretti exceptions.

Everything.

One board member stood.

"Do you understand what you've done?"

"Yes."

"You may have destroyed this company."

"No."

Adrian looked around the table.

"I destroyed what was hiding inside it."

His phone began ringing.

Then Nico's.

Then Evelyn's.

Within sixty seconds, the first news alert appeared.

MORETTI HOLDINGS OPENS INTERNAL RECORDS TO FEDERAL INVESTIGATORS.

Another followed.

CEO ADRIAN MORETTI ORDERS FULL INDEPENDENT AUDIT.

Then another.

Adrian ignored them.

Vincent's attorney called again.

This time Adrian answered.

"You just burned your own empire."

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

"No."

He ended the call.

"I burned his."

At the Westchester estate, Theo sat in front of a laptop Margaret thought she had confiscated.

She had confiscated the wrong one.

Theo had backups.

Obviously.

He watched the news.

Then opened the files Adrian had released.

"Good."

Margaret entered.

"Theodore."

Theo minimized the window.

She stared at him.

"You have another computer."

"No."

"Theodore."

"Maybe."

Margaret held out her hand.

He sighed.

Then something on the screen caught his attention.

A transfer code.

He stopped.

Margaret noticed.

"What?"

Theo reopened the file.

Vincent's accounts had been exposed.

But one transaction didn't fit.

It had been created two hours earlier.

After Vincent was already in custody.

Theo leaned closer.

"That's weird."

"What is?"

"This account is still moving money."

He began typing.

Margaret sighed.

"I should stop you."

"Probably."

"Will you stop if I tell you?"

"No."

"Then I shall make tea."

Theo followed the transaction.

One shell company.

Then another.

Then a private trust.

A hidden server responded.

Theo's eyes widened.

Vincent had created a dead-man system.

If his primary accounts were exposed, the server automatically transferred funds and distributed the forged Hawthorne evidence.

Including the files framing Evelyn.

Theo typed faster.

"No, no, no."

The system started a countdown.

UPLOAD — 04:59.

Theo grabbed his phone.

Adrian answered.

"Theo?"

"Dad."

Adrian went still.

Theo rarely called him that.

Not yet.

"What happened?"

"Vincent has another server."

Nico moved closer.

"What server?"

"A dead-man switch."

Adrian put the call on speaker.

Theo explained.

Nico opened his laptop.

"Address?"

Theo sent it.

The countdown reached three minutes.

Evelyn joined them.

"If those files upload?"

Theo answered.

"Mom becomes the bad guy again."

Adrian's face hardened.

"Can you stop it?"

Theo didn't answer.

"Theo?"

"I'm trying."

Two minutes.

Nico attacked the server from Moretti Tower.

Blocked.

Evelyn opened her own laptop.

"Move."

Nico looked at her.

"What?"

"Move."

She sat down.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

Theo saw her connection appear.

"Mom?"

"You're not the only hacker in this family."

Theo's mouth fell open.

Adrian almost laughed despite everything.

Evelyn found the authentication layer.

"Vincent used the old Hawthorne architecture."

Theo understood instantly.

"I can spoof the authorization."

"I'll open the port."

"On three?"

"Three."

They worked together.

Mother and son.

One minute.

Forty seconds.

Nico watched.

Adrian didn't understand half of what appeared on the screens.

For once, he was perfectly comfortable admitting it.

Twenty seconds.

Theo shouted, "Got it!"

Evelyn hit Enter.

The countdown stopped.

UPLOAD FAILED.

A second later, every monitor in the conference room turned pink.

Adrian closed his eyes.

A pig wearing a tiny crown appeared.

FOUND IT.

Theo cheered through the phone.

Evelyn laughed.

Nico leaned back.

"Your five-year-old just saved us again."

Adrian picked up his phone.

"Theo."

"Yeah?"

"You're still grounded."

A pause.

"Seriously?"

"Very."

"I saved Mom."

"I know."

"And maybe your company."

"I know."

"And I called you Dad."

Adrian went silent.

Theo knew exactly what he was doing.

Nico covered his mouth.

Evelyn looked away to hide a smile.

Adrian finally said:

"Two weeks."

"One."

"Two."

"Deal."

Theo immediately hung up.

Adrian stared at the phone.

"I think he manipulated me."

Evelyn smiled.

"He definitely manipulated you."

For the first time, Adrian didn't mind.

The old Moretti empire was collapsing around him.

And somehow, standing beside Evelyn while his impossible son negotiated his punishment over the phone, Adrian felt richer than he ever had.
