"The Mafia King Hunted a Hacker… Then Found His Five-Year-Old Son" Chapter 5 — Nobody Touches My Son

Three days after Adrian Moretti learned he had a son, Theo disappeared.

It happened at 3:14 on a Thursday afternoon.

And for exactly four minutes, nobody knew.

Evelyn had finally agreed to let Theo return to Saint Matthew's under one condition: Moretti security stayed invisible.

No men in black suits standing beside the sandbox.

No armored SUV directly outside the entrance.

No bodyguard following Theo into finger-painting class.

Adrian had hated every condition.

He agreed to all of them.

Mostly.

Nico placed two plainclothes guards across the street, another near the rear entrance, and one pretending to be a father waiting for pickup.

Evelyn knew about two.

Adrian considered that close enough to honesty.

At 3:10, parents began arriving.

At 3:12, a white SUV pulled into the authorized pickup lane.

At 3:13, the school receptionist received a digital authorization showing that Evelyn Carter had approved an emergency pickup.

At 3:14, a substitute aide walked into Theo's classroom.

"Your mom sent someone."

Theo looked up from the plastic dinosaur he was taking apart.

"Who?"

"Mr. Harris."

"I don't know a Mr. Harris."

"Your mom said it was urgent."

Theo frowned.

His mother had rules.

Rule one: never leave school with someone he didn't know.

Rule two: if someone claimed she had sent them, ask for the password.

Theo put the dinosaur down.

"What's the word?"

The aide blinked.

"What word?"

"The pickup word."

"I don't know. Come on, sweetheart."

Theo didn't move.

The man waiting in the hallway smiled.

"Your mom's waiting."

Theo looked at him.

"Where?"

"At the hospital."

Wrong.

His mother hated hospitals.

More importantly, the man hadn't used the password.

Theo stood.

"Okay."

The man's shoulders relaxed.

Theo picked up his backpack.

Inside was a small tracker Adrian had given him.

Evelyn had called it unnecessary.

Theo had called it cool.

Adrian had shown him one button.

Only use it if you're in trouble.

Theo slipped his hand inside the backpack.

Pressed it.

Then walked into the hallway.

---

Adrian was in a Midtown meeting when his watch vibrated.

One pulse.

Pause.

Three pulses.

He looked down.

THEO — EMERGENCY SIGNAL.

He stood so fast his chair hit the wall.

Nico saw his face.

"What?"

"Theo."

That was all Adrian said.

They were moving before anyone else in the room understood.

Nico pulled out his phone.

"Tracker is live."

"Call the school."

Adrian was already calling Evelyn.

She answered on the second ring.

"Adrian?"

"Where are you?"

"Tribeca. Why?"

His blood went cold.

"You're not picking Theo up?"

Silence.

"What?"

Adrian ran toward the elevator.

"Someone signed him out."

"No."

"Evelyn—"

"No. No, I didn't authorize anyone."

"Nico has his location."

"I'm coming."

"Stay where you are."

"Go to hell."

"Evelyn."

"That's my son."

"And mine."

The elevator opened.

Adrian stepped inside.

"I'll send a car."

She hung up.

Nico looked at him.

"That went well."

"Location."

"Moving west."

"Vehicle?"

"White SUV."

"Plate?"

"Cloned."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Of course."

---

Theo sat in the back seat between two men.

The child lock was engaged.

He noticed immediately.

One man sat beside him.

The other drove.

Theo looked out the window.

"You missed the turn."

Neither answered.

"My house is the other way."

Still nothing.

Theo sighed.

"You're kidnappers."

The man beside him looked at him.

"Quiet."

"That's a yes."

"Kid, shut up."

Theo looked down at his backpack.

The tracker was still active.

Good.

He leaned back.

"You're not very good at this."

The man grabbed his backpack.

Theo's eyes widened.

"Hey."

He searched it.

Found the tracker.

"Damn it."

He threw it out the window.

Theo watched it bounce across the street.

That was bad.

The man grabbed Theo's tablet next.

"Password."

"No."

He squeezed Theo's shoulder.

"Password."

Theo looked at his hand.

"My dad's going to be really mad about that."

The man laughed.

"Your dad doesn't even know you."

Theo's expression changed.

"Actually, he does now."

---

The tracker stopped moving.

Nico swore.

"They found it."

"Last location?"

"West Forty-Seventh."

Adrian looked out the SUV window.

Traffic.

Too much traffic.

"Camera network."

"Already pulling it."

Evelyn's car was two blocks behind.

Adrian had told her not to follow.

Naturally, she had ignored him.

Nico enlarged a traffic-camera image.

"Got them."

The white SUV turned toward the West Side Highway.

Adrian called security.

"Box them in."

"Too much civilian traffic," Nico warned.

"Then don't miss."

The Moretti vehicles moved.

One ahead.

One behind.

The white SUV realized too late.

It swerved.

Adrian's driver accelerated.

The vehicle was forced toward an empty service lane beneath a construction site.

It stopped.

Adrian was out before his own SUV fully halted.

One of the men opened the rear door.

Theo kicked him in the shin.

Hard.

"Ow!"

Theo ran.

"Theo!"

Adrian saw him.

Small navy sweater.

Dinosaur backpack gone.

Running directly toward him.

A second man reached for the boy.

Adrian crossed the distance first.

He grabbed the man's wrist and shoved him against the SUV.

Nico took over.

Adrian didn't look back.

He dropped to one knee.

Theo collided with him.

For half a second, Adrian didn't know what to do.

Then the boy's arms went around his neck.

Adrian held him.

Hard.

"Are you hurt?"

Theo shook his head.

"Did they touch you?"

"The ugly one grabbed my shoulder."

Adrian looked over Theo's head.

Nico saw his expression.

"Adrian."

One word.

A warning.

There were witnesses.

Adrian looked back at Theo.

"Anything else?"

"They stole my tablet."

"We'll get another one."

Theo pulled away.

"My code is on that tablet."

Nico groaned.

"Of course it is."

A car stopped behind them.

Evelyn jumped out.

"Theo!"

Theo turned.

"Mom!"

She ran to him.

Adrian let go.

Evelyn dropped to her knees and wrapped both arms around her son.

"Are you okay? Look at me."

"I'm okay."

"Did they hurt you?"

"No."

She kissed his forehead, cheeks, hair.

Then she looked at Adrian.

Something passed between them.

No anger.

No old accusation.

Just terror slowly becoming relief.

"You found him."

"He found me."

Theo lifted his chin.

"I pressed the button."

Adrian looked at him.

"You did exactly what I told you."

Theo smiled slightly.

"Does that mean I can have a new tablet?"

Evelyn laughed.

Then cried.

Adrian looked away.

---

The interrogation produced one useful fact.

The kidnappers had received their instructions through an encrypted Moretti communication channel.

Nico put the report on Adrian's desk that evening.

"Internal authorization."

Adrian stared at it.

"How high?"

"High enough that I don't like it."

"Names."

"I'm narrowing them down."

Adrian looked toward the glass wall.

Beyond it, Evelyn sat on a sofa with Theo asleep against her.

The boy had refused to sleep until he could see both parents.

That word still felt strange.

Parents.

Nico followed his gaze.

"You can't send them back to Tribeca."

"I know."

"Hotel?"

"No."

"Safe house?"

"Already compromised."

Nico understood.

"Westchester."

Adrian nodded.

---

Evelyn's answer was immediate.

"No."

Adrian stood across from her.

"Someone used internal Moretti credentials to take him."

"Which is exactly why I don't want him inside a Moretti property."

"The estate has twenty-four-hour security."

"So did your network."

From the sofa, Theo opened one eye.

"She's got you there."

Adrian looked at him.

"I thought you were asleep."

"I was."

"Go back to sleep."

Theo closed his eye.

Adrian lowered his voice.

"Westchester is the safest place."

"For whom?"

"For him."

Evelyn looked at Theo.

That ended the argument.

She hated it.

Adrian knew she hated it.

But an hour later, they were driving north.

---

The Moretti estate had fourteen bedrooms.

Theo chose the one beside Adrian's.

Evelyn stared at him.

"There are twelve other rooms."

"This one has better Wi-Fi."

Adrian said, "Smart choice."

Evelyn pointed at him.

"Do not encourage him."

Theo dropped his backpack.

Then looked around the enormous bedroom.

"Do I live here now?"

"Temporarily," Evelyn said.

Adrian answered at the same time.

"For as long as you want."

Evelyn glared.

Theo smiled.

At 6:03 the next morning, Adrian entered the kitchen.

The smart speakers activated.

A loud pig squeal filled the room.

OINK! OINK!

Adrian stopped.

Margaret nearly spilled her coffee.

Theo sat at the breakfast table eating cereal.

Completely innocent.

Adrian looked at him.

"Turn it off."

"I don't know what you mean."

Adrian took another step.

OINK!

Margaret started laughing.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"Fix it."

Theo ate another spoonful.

"Maybe your smart-home security is bad too."

Adrian stared at his son.

Theo stared back.

Then Adrian did something Evelyn hadn't seen in five years.

He smiled.

Just barely.

Theo's grin widened.

And for one dangerous second, Evelyn saw exactly what she had spent five years trying not to imagine.

A family.
