"Shh, My Rival Is the CEO" Chapter 9 — Two Kings, One Enemy
The Blackwood estate had hosted weddings, funerals, political fundraisers, and at least three meetings that had quietly changed the balance of power in New York.
Tonight, it looked ready for war.
Black SUVs lined the circular drive.
Cross vehicles occupied the opposite side.
Armed men stood beneath the stone arches of the Hudson Valley mansion, watching one another with hands too close to their jackets.
At 8:02 p.m., Ethan Blackwood arrived alone.
He stepped from the rear of a Mercedes wearing a black three-piece suit.
No visible weapon.
No Julian.
Richard Blackwood waited at the entrance.
His expression revealed nothing.
“You came back.”
Ethan adjusted one cuff.
“I never left.”
“That isn’t what I heard.”
“You hear too much.”
Richard studied his son.
“And Cross?”
Ethan’s face became perfectly cold.
“Finished.”
Richard searched his eyes.
Ethan gave him nothing.
After a moment, his father stepped aside.
“Then come inside.”
---
Twenty miles away, a black Mustang flew north through the darkness.
Julian shifted gears.
Mason’s voice came through the earpiece.
“You understand this plan is insane.”
“You’ve mentioned that.”
“Seven times.”
“Eight.”
“I hate you.”
Julian smiled.
“You’d miss me.”
“Not if you get yourself killed.”
The smile disappeared.
Julian looked at the road ahead.
“Did you get into Kane’s network?”
“Partially.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning Sebastian Kane is either paranoid or smarter than he looks.”
“Neither is comforting.”
“I can open the service gate for approximately forty seconds.”
“That’s all I need.”
“You say things like that because you enjoy giving me ulcers.”
Julian accelerated.
“Open it.”
---
Inside the Blackwood estate, dinner had not been served.
Nobody was pretending this was social.
Richard sat at one end of the library.
Marcus Cross sat at the other.
Sebastian Kane occupied the center.
He was taller than Ethan remembered.
Silver at the temples.
Expensive navy suit.
The relaxed confidence of a man who believed every person in the room was already playing the role he had assigned them.
Sebastian smiled when Ethan entered.
“Mr. Blackwood.”
“Kane.”
“I was sorry to hear about the engagement.”
“No, you weren’t.”
Sebastian laughed.
“I see heartbreak hasn’t damaged your personality.”
Ethan took the empty chair beside his father.
Marcus watched him with open hostility.
“Where is my nephew?”
Ethan met his gaze.
“Ask him.”
“You were the last person seen with him.”
“And yet you claim to run the Cross family.”
Marcus leaned forward.
Richard interrupted.
“Enough.”
Sebastian lifted one hand.
“That is exactly why we’re here.”
Ethan looked at him.
Sebastian continued.
“The alliance failed. Both families have suffered losses. Unless terms are established tonight, this city will see a war neither side can control.”
Ethan almost admired the performance.
Sebastian sounded concerned.
Reasonable.
Necessary.
The man who had spent years setting fires was now selling extinguishers.
“How fortunate,” Ethan said.
Sebastian looked at him.
“What?”
“That you’re here to save us.”
The smile weakened.

“I’m here because both families retained my company.”
“Exactly.”
Ethan leaned back.
“You always seem to arrive after something goes wrong.”
Richard looked toward him.
“Ethan.”
“Actually, that’s inaccurate.”
Ethan’s gaze remained on Sebastian.
“Sometimes you arrive before.”
Silence.
Sebastian’s expression didn’t move.
But Ethan saw the change in his eyes.
Small.
Enough.
“What are you suggesting?” Sebastian asked.
Ethan smiled.
“Nothing.”
He picked up his glass.
“Yet.”
---
The service gate opened at 8:19.
Julian killed the Mustang’s headlights.
He crossed the property line at speed, turned onto a maintenance road, and stopped behind an old carriage house.
Thirty-eight seconds.
The gate closed again.
Julian climbed out.
Black clothes.
Shoulder holster.
Phone.
Lock picks.
And the engagement ring still on his finger.
Mason noticed through the body camera.
“You’re still wearing that?”
Julian looked down.
“Focus.”
“You’re sentimental.”
“I will disconnect you.”
“You kissed him, didn’t you?”
“Mason.”
“Fine. Murder conspiracy first. Emotional repression later.”
Julian entered through the servants’ corridor.
He knew the estate better than Richard realized.
During the first weeks of the engagement, Ethan had shown him the security plans.
At the time, Julian had accused him of being paranoid.
Now he silently apologized.
He reached Sebastian’s temporary office on the second floor.
Locked.
Julian knelt.
Nine seconds later, it wasn’t.
“Show-off,” Mason whispered.
Julian entered.
Laptop.
Briefcase.
Two encrypted drives.
“Found something.”
He plugged in Mason’s device.
The screen flashed.
TRANSFER STARTED.
“Two minutes,” Mason said.
Julian checked the hallway.
“Naturally.”
“Maybe sing something.”
“Maybe die quietly.”
“See? This is why Ethan likes you.”
Julian froze.
Mason laughed.
“I knew it.”
“I’m ending this call.”
“Seventy-four seconds.”
Footsteps sounded outside.
Julian’s hand moved to his weapon.
The door opened.
A man entered.
Not Sebastian.
One of Kane’s guards.
They stared at each other.
The guard reached for his gun.
Julian hit him with the laptop.
---
Downstairs, Ethan heard the crash.
Nobody else reacted.
Sebastian did.
His eyes moved toward the ceiling.
Ethan smiled.
There you are.
Sebastian stood.
“If you’ll excuse me.”
Ethan stood too.
“Sit down.”
Every head turned.
Sebastian looked at him.
“Excuse me?”
Ethan removed his jacket.
Richard’s face tightened.
“Ethan.”
But Sebastian understood.
“You.”
Ethan rolled up one sleeve.
“You planted the termination order on my system.”
Marcus stood.
“What termination order?”
Sebastian’s expression remained calm.
“You appear confused.”
“No.”
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Someone paid Kane three days before Alexander Cross was killed.”
Marcus froze.
Richard turned toward Sebastian.
“That’s a lie.”
“Then ask him.”
Sebastian slowly reached inside his jacket.
Every armed man in the room moved.
Ethan didn’t.
Sebastian removed a phone.
He looked at the screen.
Then smiled.
“Your fiancé has poor timing.”
Ethan’s blood went cold.
The doors behind him opened.
Two guards dragged Julian inside.
His lip was split.
His hands were restrained.
But he was smiling.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
Ethan’s face gave away nothing.

Inside, something violent woke up.
Sebastian looked between them.
“I thought you said it was finished.”
Ethan stared at Julian.
“It is.”
Julian’s smile faltered.
Only slightly.
Sebastian laughed.
“Excellent.”
He took Julian’s gun from one of the guards.
Then pointed it at Julian’s head.
Ethan stopped breathing.
“Prove it.”
Richard stood.
“Kane.”
Sebastian ignored him.
“You want peace, Ethan?”
Ethan looked at the weapon.
“Put it down.”
“No.”
Sebastian stepped behind Julian.
“You’ve been inconvenient from the beginning, Mr. Cross.”
Julian sighed.
“People keep telling me that.”
“Julian,” Ethan said.
Their eyes met.
The signal was tiny.
A glance.
Then Julian smiled.
Sebastian looked at Ethan.
“Your family or him.”
Nobody moved.
Ethan’s voice was quiet.
“You still don’t understand.”
Sebastian frowned.
“This was never a choice.”
Ethan moved.
At the same instant, Julian dropped his weight and drove his shoulder backward.
The gun fired.
The bullet hit the ceiling.
Ethan crossed the distance before Sebastian recovered.
Julian twisted free.
Chaos exploded.
Blackwood and Cross guards drew weapons.
Richard shouted.
Marcus overturned the table.
Julian struck one of Sebastian’s men and grabbed the fallen gun.
Ethan drove Sebastian against the wall.
Sebastian hit him across the face.
Ethan barely reacted.
“You killed Alexander Cross.”
Punch.
“You killed my uncle.”
Another.
“You spent twenty years making our families bury people.”
Sebastian smiled through blood.
“And they were stupid enough to do it.”
Ethan stopped.
That sentence was enough.
Julian held up Sebastian’s phone.
“Say it again.”
Sebastian’s smile vanished.
Julian tapped the screen.
Recording.
Then every television in the library came alive.
Bank transfers.
Dates.
Shell corporations.
Audio recordings.
Internal Kane Strategic communications.
Mason had finished the download.
Julian looked at Marcus.
“My father wasn’t killed by Blackwood.”
Then at Richard.
“And your brother wasn’t killed by Cross.”
Sebastian lunged toward Julian.
Ethan caught him.
The two men crashed into the table.
A guard raised his weapon toward Ethan.
Julian saw it.
“Ethan!”
He moved.
The shot went off.
Julian stumbled.
Everything stopped.
Ethan turned.
Blood spread across Julian’s upper arm.
Not his chest.
Not his heart.
But Ethan didn’t know that yet.
He saw red.
Then he saw nothing else.
He crossed the room and slammed the shooter into the floor.
“Ethan!”
Julian’s voice reached him.
Ethan stopped.
Julian stood with one hand pressed against his arm.
“Look at me.”
Ethan did.
“I’m okay.”
“You were shot.”
“Technically.”
Ethan’s face went white.
Julian almost smiled.
“Don’t do the trembling-hand thing again.”
Ethan walked to him.
He didn’t care who was watching.
He took Julian’s face between his hands.
“You’re an idiot.”
“I know.”
“You stepped in front of a gun.”
“I know.”
“I hate you.”
Julian smiled.
“No, you don’t.”
Ethan stared at him.
“No.”
His forehead touched Julian’s.
“I really don’t.”
Around them, the war ended quietly.
Not with a treaty.
Not with a marriage contract.
With the truth.
---
Sebastian Kane was taken away before midnight.
Neither family stopped it.
By morning, Kane Strategic’s servers, accounts, and internal communications had been turned over to federal investigators.
Richard stood alone on the terrace.
Marcus joined him.
For twenty-three years, they had blamed each other.
Neither man apologized.
Some wounds were too old for one night.
Inside, Ethan wrapped Julian’s arm again despite the fact that a doctor had already done it.
“You’re making it too tight.”
“No.”
“You’re angry.”
“Yes.”
“At the bullet?”
“At you.”
Julian smiled.
Ethan looked up.
“Why are you smiling?”
“Because you chose me.”
Ethan’s hands stopped.
“So did you.”
Julian’s smile faded.
He looked at the ring on his finger.
“No.”
Ethan frowned.
Julian touched his face.
“I chose you before tonight.”
For once, Ethan Blackwood had absolutely nothing to say.
So Julian kissed him.
And for once, there was nobody left to pretend for.
