"The Protocol That Knew Our Names" Chapter 9 — The Memory We Buried Together
Chapter 9 — The Memory We Buried Together
The memory did not arrive gently.
It came with the sting of cold air in Eli’s lungs and Rowan’s hand locked around his. The three of them were boys again, running through a service tunnel while alarms screamed behind them.
“This way,” Nico shouted.
He knew the building better than either of them. He led them through an unlocked laundry room, then stopped at a side exit where snow blew across the dark parking lot.
Young Rowan turned back. “We can’t leave Sloane.”
“My father told me to get you out,” Nico said. “He said Calder is coming.”
The name was a blade in the memory.
Eli came back to himself on the abandoned studio floor. Rowan caught him before his knees hit the tile.
“Calder did it,” Eli said. “He started the surge.”
Mara, listening through an earpiece, was quiet for a long moment. “I found a payment trail after Calder’s arrest. He paid an outside contractor to alter Sloane’s trial settings that night.”
“Why?” Rowan asked.
“To force a failure. My father would have shut Halcyon down if he knew how far Calder had gone.”
Eli looked at the photographs. There were more details now: a birthday card from Sloane to Nico, a school photo with Eli’s name written on the back, a small cassette labeled TWO WITNESSES.
He played it on a portable deck sitting beneath the pictures.
Teenage Eli spoke first. “If they find out Rowan remembers, they’ll use him. His dad will make him stay. Calder will make him prove he’s fine.”
Teenage Rowan answered, furious and frightened. “And if you forget, you’ll leave me with it.”
“I’ll leave you with a way out. Nico will know.”
Nico’s younger voice entered, barely audible. “I’ll keep the files hidden. I swear.”
Eli gripped the table. The memory that followed was worse: he had not erased himself to escape Rowan. He had asked Sloane to erase the plan from both of them so Calder could not use their shared knowledge to trap Rowan in the family company. It had been a promise made by three frightened boys.
“We left him,” Rowan said.
“We were children,” Eli said.
“He was too.”
Rowan’s voice was thick with guilt. “I remembered Nico for years. Not clearly. Just enough to know there was someone else in the hallway. I told myself I could not find him because it would put him in danger.”
“Maybe it would have,” Eli said. “Maybe you were also afraid to learn he hated you.”
Rowan nodded once. “Yes.”
Eli did not excuse him. Instead he rested his hand against Rowan’s back, a brief weight of solidarity. The missing years were not an argument one apology could solve. They were a wound with more than one name on it.
Nico appeared in the doorway before either could move.
He held a small black drive in one hand and looked exhausted rather than threatening. “You remembered that much.”

“You could have contacted us,” Eli said.
“After what? A decade of watching you live a life you did not remember promising?” Nico’s smile was bitter. “Your friend became an heir. You became proof that the system works. And I became the son of a dead man everyone called unethical.”
“My father was unethical,” Rowan said. “So was mine. That does not make you disposable.”
Nico flinched.
Eli took the cassette from the player and held it out. “I am sorry we left you with it. But don’t turn the same system on other people because you were left alone.”
“It made you choose each other.”
“No,” Eli said. “It cornered us until we had to fight for the right to choose.”
Nico looked down at the drive. “Calder has the master key. He took it from evidence storage before the police arrived. With it, he can erase a subject remotely. He told me he would erase you first, Eli. Then he would make Rowan say it was mercy.”
Rowan went cold beside him.
“Help us stop him,” Eli said.
Before Nico could answer, every phone in the room erupted with notifications.
A livestream had begun on Vale Biomedical’s official account. Calder stood outside the courthouse, free on temporary release, speaking to cameras.
“Eli Mercer exploited my nephew’s illness,” he said. “For influence, access, and public attention.”
The comments multiplied. Edited clips of Rowan reaching for Eli on the terrace played beneath the claim. The board had reinstated Calder pending investigation.
Rowan’s phone rang. He listened for ten seconds, then ended the call.
“They want me to release a statement denying our relationship,” he said.
Eli felt the old instinct to make it easy for him. To say do what you have to.
Instead, he opened the livestream console on Mara’s laptop.
“No,” he said. “We tell the truth.”
Rowan stared at him.
“Not the whole past. Not the parts we do not own yet. But mine.” Eli faced the camera as the stream switched to him. “I was a child in a program that took my memories without giving me a real choice. I am not a weapon. I am not evidence of Rowan’s weakness. And nobody gets to decide who I stand beside now.”
He did not look at Rowan when he finished. He did not need to.
Nico placed the black drive on the table. “I’ll help.”
At the same moment, Mara called from the other end of the line.
“He is gone,” she said. “Calder left the courthouse with the master key.”
Nico watched the empty doorway after the call. “He will go back to the facility,” he said. “The master key only works there. It was designed to require a physical witness.”
“Then that is where we end it,” Eli said.
Rowan reached for his hand. This time Eli took it without waiting for either of them to be certain.
Outside, the lake wind rattled the broken windows. For a moment, none of them spoke. Then Nico picked up the backup core and tucked it into his coat.
“I am coming too,” he said. “Not as an administrator. As a witness.”
