"Three Keys to the Same Room" Chapter 7: The Door That Opened
Chapter 7: The Door That Opened
The alarm was still ringing when Sloane tried to leave.
She turned toward the ballroom with one hand on the strap of her bag, as if the last two minutes had been an inconvenient interruption to a party she had paid to attend.
I stepped in front of her.
"Move, Evan."
"No."
Her eyes dropped to the recorder in my palm. For the first time that night, her certainty cracked.
Behind me, Rowan was close enough that I could feel the heat of him at my back. He did not touch me. Miles stood to my left, pale from the call with his father but absolutely still.
"Campus Safety is coming," Miles said.
Sloane gave a laugh that was almost bored. "For a fire-door alert? They’ll be thrilled."
"For the threats," I said. "For the video. For what you just said on this recording."
"A recording you made without my consent?"
The question was so ridiculous I nearly smiled. "You want to talk about consent now?"
People had begun gathering in the museum corridor. Donors in black tie. Students in borrowed suits. A woman from the Foundation board held a champagne flute at chest level and watched us with the fascinated horror of somebody seeing a private disaster become public entertainment.
Sloane noticed them too. Her face changed by half an inch.
"You don’t understand what you’re doing," she said quietly.
"Actually," I said, "I understand it better than I did this morning."
I sent the audio again. Priya. The legal clinic. Jace’s archive. My own private drive. Four separate progress circles turned green.
Rowan exhaled beside me. Not relief. Readiness.
Two campus safety officers came through the corridor, followed by Dean Armitage from Student Affairs. I recognized the dean from scholarship orientation, when he had told a room full of anxious first-years that Northbridge protected excellence. At the time I had thought that sounded comforting.
Now I wondered who counted as excellent when a donor’s daughter was involved.
"Mr. Cole?" Dean Armitage asked.
"I need to make a report," I said. My voice shook once, then settled. "About harassment, unauthorized filming, threats against my scholarship, and a possible drugging at the Student Media party. I have evidence."
Sloane’s mouth tightened. "Those are serious accusations."
"They are," I said. "That’s why I brought receipts."
The officer asked if I had been injured on the terrace. Rowan’s gaze went to the red mark at my throat before I could answer.
"My tie caught in the door," I said. "Sloane locked it."
"I did not lock him anywhere," she said sharply.
"The fire door logs will show who entered after me," Rowan said.
Her eyes flicked to him. "You forced the lock."
"To get him out."
The officer made a note. Nobody spoke for a second.
It was Miles who broke the silence. "The Foundation guest-network logs were used to distribute material connected to this. I’ll authorize the investigation."

Sloane stared at him. "Your father won’t allow that."
"My father doesn’t get to decide what happened to Evan."
There was no performance in his voice. That was what made it land.
Dean Armitage asked Sloane to accompany the officers to a private room. She did not move.
"You think this makes you brave?" she asked me.
I thought of the last month: every notification, every anonymous comment, every time I had made myself smaller because someone else had a camera. "No," I said. "I think I was scared. There’s a difference."
She left with the officers five minutes later, still wearing the expression of someone who expected the room to apologize for embarrassing her.
Only after the corridor cleared did my knees start to shake.
Rowan looked at me. "Do you want to sit down?"
"No."
"Water?"
"No."
He nodded. "Okay."
That one word made my throat ache more than the tie had.
Miles had stepped away to answer another call. I watched his back stiffen as he listened. When he returned, the color had left his face.
"My father froze my discretionary trust," he said. "And my board stipend. He says I’ve created a reputational crisis."
"Miles—"
"Don’t apologize for him," he said, then softened immediately. "Please. I’m not saying you were going to."
"I wasn’t."
His expression broke into the smallest, saddest smile. "Good."
Jace arrived ten minutes later, breathless and furious, his camera bag bouncing against his hip. He had already downloaded the audio and sent Priya a clean copy. Then he opened the original camera-card files on his laptop.
"I found something," he said.
There was a service tag in the metadata for the hotel clip: the Foundation’s event-media account. Not a mysterious hacker. Not an invisible mastermind. An access credential issued for the donor gala.
"Who had it?" I asked.
Jace zoomed in. "Sloane requested temporary access two days before the party. And someone approved it."
The approval field showed only an employee number.
Miles looked at it for a long time.
"That’s my father’s executive office," he said.
The night did not get easier after that.
At three in the morning, we sat around the apartment kitchen table with cold takeout, three laptops, and a rule none of us had written down: nobody would make a choice for Evan Cole again.
I drafted my statement. Jace organized files. Rowan built a timeline of access points. Miles called an attorney who did not work for his family.
When I finally looked up, Rowan was asleep in the chair beside mine, his head tipped back and one hand resting open on the table. Miles was standing at the window, still in his tuxedo, staring at the dark street.
I did not know what would happen to my scholarship. I did not know what Sloane would say in the morning. I did not know whether Miles’s father had approved anything or merely let someone use the power attached to his name.
But the evidence existed in more places than fear did now.
And when the first gray edge of morning appeared beyond the apartment buildings, I hit send on my formal complaint myself.
