"Three Keys to the Same Room" Chapter 6: The Gala List
Chapter 6: The Gala List
The Hart Foundation gala took place in a museum full of white stone, glass ceilings, and people who smiled while checking whether you belonged.
I wore a borrowed black suit. Miles fixed my tie in the car, his knuckles brushing my throat once before he pulled away.
“Too tight?” he asked.
“No.”
Rowan, beside me, said nothing. But his jaw shifted when Miles’s fingers lingered near the knot.
I looked between them. “Rule three.”
Miles’s mouth twitched. Rowan looked out the window.
Inside, we presented HavenLink’s prototype to donors under supervision. Sloane found us before the first speech.
“I see you all made it,” she said. “How committed.”
She led us into a quiet service corridor and gave us the deal without pretending it was anything else.
“Evan withdraws from the interview campaign. Miles hands over his Foundation voting proxy. Rowan steps away from HavenLink. The posts disappear.”
“And if we say no?” I asked.
“Your scholarship committee receives the full hotel video. The Foundation receives evidence of security failures. Everyone loses something.”
“You drugged me,” I said.
“Careful.” Her smile sharpened. “You can’t prove that.”
I let the recorder in my cuff keep running.
Miles said, “You’re not getting my proxy.”
Sloane looked at him almost kindly. “Then your father will freeze the trust before dessert.”
His phone rang as if she had timed it. He answered. His expression emptied.
“He did it,” Miles said after the call. “He froze everything.”
Rowan’s phone lit up next: an email accusing him of copying a design from a discontinued accessibility patent. His face went white, then furious.
Sloane had prepared for all of us.
I pressed record on my phone as a backup, too obvious for her to miss. “You did this because you want HavenLink.”
“I did this because none of you understand what power costs,” she said. “Miles was always meant to sit on that board. You two made him sentimental.”
There it was.
I started toward the ballroom, intending to send the audio to Priya before Sloane could see it. Sloane grabbed my sleeve. I pulled free and ran down the corridor.
The door to the exterior terrace shut behind me.
Locked.
Sloane followed at a measured pace. “You should have taken the deal.”
My tie had caught in the door on the way out. The knot tightened when I moved, cutting into my throat.
“Let me out.”
“Give me the phone.”
I backed toward the railing. Somewhere inside, music swelled. I kept the small recorder pressed against my palm.
Then the lock shook.
“Evan!” Rowan’s voice, sharp with panic.
The door burst inward. Rowan crossed the terrace in three strides, pushed the caught tie free, and loosened the knot with unsteady hands.
“Look at me,” he said.
I did.
His fingers brushed my neck, checking the red mark the fabric had left. His face was close enough that I could feel his breath.

Miles appeared behind him, anger stripped bare. “Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Evan.”
“No,” I said again. “But I got it.”
I opened my hand and placed the recorder between them.
Sloane’s smile finally broke.
Inside the museum, an alarm began to sound.
The alarm was not for me. It was a fire-door alert, triggered when Rowan forced the terrace lock. Guests turned toward the corridor. Sloane tried to push past us, but I stepped into her path.
“Move,” she hissed.
“Why?” I asked. “So you can decide what happened again?”
Miles had gone pale from the call, yet he stood beside me. “Campus safety is on the way.”
“You think a recording changes anything?” Sloane asked.
“No,” I said. “The pattern does.”
I sent the audio file from my phone. One copy went to Priya. One went to the student legal clinic. One went to the protected folder Jace had set up. The progress circle turned blue in front of her.
Sloane lunged for my hand. Rowan caught her wrist before she reached me, not hard enough to hurt, only enough to stop her.
“Don’t touch him,” Rowan said.
It was the first time I had heard him sound that angry.
Security arrived through the ballroom doors. Behind them, Miles’s father appeared in a tuxedo, face rigid with disbelief.
“Miles,” he said. “What have you done?”
Miles looked at him, then at me. “I stopped letting you do it for me.”
The words were not a grand declaration. They were quieter, and because of that, stronger.
Sloane was escorted inside for questioning. The terrace door remained open behind us, letting cold night air into the bright museum. I suddenly realized my hands were shaking.
Rowan noticed first. “Can I?” he asked, lifting one hand toward my shoulder.
I nodded.
His palm settled there, warm and steady. Miles stood close enough to catch my eye but did not touch me until I reached for his sleeve.
The alarm had stopped. The gala music had started again, thin and distant through the doors.
“What happens now?” Miles asked.
I looked at the recorder in my hand. “Now we make sure she can’t tell the story alone.”
We waited in a side gallery while campus safety took statements. I gave mine twice: once aloud, once in writing. I described the party, the hotel footage, the threats, the gala. I did not soften any of it to make wealthy people comfortable.
Rowan stood by the window, hands clenched. Miles sat beside me on a marble bench, close enough that our sleeves touched.
“You don’t have to stay,” I said.
“I know,” Miles replied.
“I want to,” Rowan said from across the room.
The answers were simple. They made something inside me loosen.
When the officer asked whether I wanted an escort home, I said yes. Not because I was helpless. Because accepting help was different from surrendering the right to choose it.
Outside, the three of us walked toward the waiting car without speaking, but none of us walked alone.
