"Three Keys to the Same Room" Chapter 4: A Room Full of Witnesses
Chapter 4: A Room Full of Witnesses
The studio lights made everyone look guilty.
I sat across from Priya, the Student Media Live producer, with a microphone clipped to my shirt and my edited timeline open on the monitor between us. Beyond the glass wall, the campus newsroom was full of movement: camera operators, student volunteers, Jace pacing with his DSLR, Rowan near the exit, Miles leaning against a bank of equipment with his tie loosened.
Neither of them had asked to come on air.
That mattered.
“We can cut the segment at any time,” Priya said quietly. “You control what you answer.”
“I know.”
“And if you want to talk about the harassment without discussing your private life, that’s enough.”
“That’s the plan.”
The red light went on.
Priya introduced me as a media student and HavenLink’s interaction designer. She used the word “allegations.” I used the word “lies.”
I explained the posts without reading their captions aloud. I showed the side-exit footage, the time stamps, the gap between the original clip and the version that went viral. I said that somebody had shared information about my scholarship to make a rumor sound like evidence.
“Are you denying that you’re involved with Miles Hart or Rowan Vale?” Priya asked, carefully.
My mouth went dry.
Through the glass, Rowan stopped moving. Miles lifted his head.
“I’m saying my relationships are not a public tender,” I answered. “No one gets to photograph me without consent, drug me, or threaten my education because they want leverage over somebody else.”
The chat feed moved too fast to read. Priya looked briefly impressed.
Then every phone in the studio vibrated.
Jace cursed under his breath.
Northbridge Whisper had posted a video.
It was from the hotel room.
Only twelve seconds long. Long enough to show me asleep on the bed, Miles kneeling beside it, Rowan watching from the sofa. The sound had been stripped out. The caption did the rest.
TWO HARTS, ONE SCHOLARSHIP. HOW MUCH IS COLE WORTH?
For one ugly moment, I couldn’t breathe.
Priya reached for the commercial cue. “We can stop.”
I looked at the camera instead.
“Don’t,” I said.
The word surprised all of us.
“That video was recorded through a hotel door without permission,” I said, each sentence slower than the last. “The person in it had a sedative in his system. If you’re watching it because you think it proves something about me, ask yourself why somebody needed to invade my room to tell their story.”
The studio fell still.
“We will be sending the evidence to campus safety,” I continued. “And I will not apologize for having people who made sure I was safe.”
The segment ended three minutes early. I left the chair with my legs shaking and went straight into the hallway.
Miles caught my elbow. “Evan.”
I looked at him. “I’m okay.”
“That wasn’t what I asked.”

His fingers tightened, then immediately loosened. He was trying. I saw it.
“I don’t know,” I said.
Rowan came up beside us. “The university suspended HavenLink’s final-round access while they investigate.”
Of course they had. Punish the target first. It was easier than finding the person holding the camera.
Miles’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen and went pale.
“My father,” he said.
“Take it,” I told him.
He did, but he walked away before I could hear more than, “No, that is not what happened.”
Rowan watched him leave. “He’ll choose the project.”
“That isn’t the only thing at stake.”
“I know.”
“Do you?” I turned on him. “Because you’ve both been acting like I’m a crisis you can pass between you. First you decide I can’t walk alone, then you decide who gets to watch me sleep, and now you’re deciding what Miles will do.”
Rowan’s face closed.
“I was trying to keep you safe.”
“I didn’t ask you to turn me into a locked door.”
The words landed hard. I regretted them before I finished breathing, but not enough to take them back.
Rowan looked past my shoulder, toward the studio lights. “What do you need?”
It was the first right question all night.
“A way to prove Sloane did this,” I said. “And space to do it.”
“Okay.” His voice was rough. “I can give you both.”
My phone lit up.
Unknown number.
Trade me HavenLink’s prototype access by Friday. Or the next video goes to your scholarship committee.
Attached was a still frame from inside our apartment.
I did not show Rowan at first. I copied the message into my evidence folder, backed it up twice, and called Jace.
Then I looked at the locked newsroom door and understood what Sloane wanted.
She wanted me frightened enough to surrender something that wasn’t hers.
I was done being frightened in private.
At the apartment, I sat at the kitchen table while Jace copied every post into an archive. Rowan stayed in his room because I had asked for space. Miles stayed in the hallway because he apparently did not know where else to put himself.
“You can come in,” I said eventually.
He sat across from me, careful not to touch anything. “My father says he can make this disappear.”
“By making me disappear first?”
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt, but it was better than another soft lie. “What did you tell him?”
“That he doesn’t get to use you as a warning.”
I studied him. “And what happens to you?”
“I don’t know.”
For once, he sounded frightened too.
Rowan returned with takeout and set it on the counter. He did not ask whether I was hungry. He asked, “Do you want company?”
I nodded.
We ate in silence. It was not a peaceful silence. It was a new one: three people trying to learn how not to mistake concern for ownership. When my phone buzzed again, I did not hide it. I put it in the middle of the table, where all of us could see the threat without letting it decide what we did next.
