"The Binding They Tried to Bury" Chapter 6 — The Vote to Erase Him
Chapter 6 — The Vote to Erase Him
At 8:57 the following morning, Elias walked back into Harborline Civic carrying a recorder in his inside pocket and no illusion that anyone intended to save him.
The boardroom was full before the meeting began. Counsel occupied the back wall. Two independent directors had joined by video. Julian sat in the same chair he had used during the suspension vote, wearing a navy suit and the expression of a man ready to endure someone else’s tragedy.
Rowan was not there.
That was also part of the plan.
Elias took his place at the end of the table. Mira sat behind him with Calder & Moss’s litigation team. On the other side, the board secretary laid out folders labeled
CONFIDENTIAL MEDICAL AND GOVERNANCE REVIEW
.
“Remove those,” Elias said.
Celia Lorne looked startled. “Mr. Hart—”
“Remove them, or I will enter an objection before this meeting is called to order.”
The folders remained.
“Noted,” Elias said. “Then every director here is on record as choosing to discuss private health information without my consent.”
The board counsel quietly gathered the folders.
It was a small victory. Elias took it anyway.
Celia began with the formal accusation: restricted Harborline data had been accessed through Elias’s executive credentials and transmitted to parties connected to the city bid. The arrest, the press coverage, and the alleged instability had damaged investor confidence.
“You may respond,” she said.
Elias stood.
“The access logs are fabricated,” he said. “Not merely disputed. Fabricated.”
Nina Alvarez appeared on the wall monitor from Calder & Moss. She displayed the server architecture in layered diagrams, too clear for anyone to hide behind terminology.
“The entries attributed to Mr. Hart use an obsolete remote portal,” Nina explained. “This portal was decommissioned fourteen months ago. The timestamps mimic current systems but preserve the old portal’s formatting. The person who created them had archived credentials, not live executive access.”
Murmurs moved through the board.
Nina brought up a second page. “We also recovered a routing signature connected to a consultancy named Anther Labs. Its director is related to former Harborline public-relations consultant Miles Venn.”
Julian leaned back. “That proves a third party may have acted. It does not absolve Elias.”
Elias looked at him. “It proves you were prepared to remove me before anyone asked who built the evidence.”
“I was prepared to protect the company.”
“From the truth?”
Celia raised a hand. “We will maintain order.”
The door opened.
Every head turned as Rowan Blackwood entered with Tessa Lane and a representative from the city procurement office. His presence changed the room immediately. The cameras outside would have a field day with it; the directors knew that too.
“This is not a Blackwood meeting,” Celia said sharply.
“No,” Rowan replied. “It is a meeting about why Blackwood Infrastructure was awarded a contract under potentially compromised scoring.”

Tessa handed the board counsel a sealed disclosure packet.
Rowan did not look at Elias first. He looked at the directors.
“On the morning of the award, my compliance team found a variance in the final scoring matrix. I did not report it immediately.”
The words hit the room like glass breaking.
“Mr. Blackwood,” Celia said, “are you admitting wrongdoing?”
“I am admitting failure.” His voice never lifted. “I assumed the variance was a lawful policy adjustment. I also assumed Mr. Hart was capable of manipulating the process to his advantage. Those assumptions served my company, and they were wrong.”
Elias watched Rowan say it without looking for credit.
“Blackwood Infrastructure has requested a voluntary independent review of the award,” Rowan continued. “If the contract is voided, my company will absorb the consequences. But no one in this room gets to use a possibly manufactured scandal to erase the person most harmed by it.”
Julian’s expression finally shifted.
Only a fraction. But Elias saw it.
“Very moving,” Julian said. “But it does not change the fact that Elias is facing serious personal circumstances that may impair his judgment.”
There it was.
The board secretary slid a new document across the table. A medical consent form bearing Elias’s name, his doctor’s practice logo, and a signature that looked almost like his.
Almost.
“This authorizes the trust guardian to act temporarily,” Julian said. “It was signed after the Mercer incident, when Elias was understandably distressed.”
Mira inhaled behind him.
Elias picked up the page. The forged signature was good. The date was worse: it placed him at a private clinic during the same hour he had been in the hotel infirmary, recorded by paramedics and security cameras.
Julian had expected denial. Anger. Panic.
Instead, Elias looked at the board.
“He wants you to choose between two ugly stories,” Elias said. “In one, I am a criminal. In the other, I am too fragile to own my own life. Both stories give him my votes.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
“I will not ask you to believe me because you know me,” Elias continued. “I am asking you to follow the only process that protects this company from all of us.”
He took a document from Mira and placed it before Celia.
“This is an emergency petition for independent custodianship of the Hart Trust records. I am voluntarily freezing my own voting rights for thirty days. No proxy to Julian. No proxy to me. A court-appointed auditor reviews every capacity clause, every amendment, every transfer, and every medical authorization connected to the trust.”
The room fell silent.
Julian stared at the petition as if he had stopped understanding English.
“Elias,” he said softly, “you do not have to make rash decisions.”
“That is why I am not giving the decision to you.”
Celia read the petition twice. “If you freeze your votes, the company could lose stability.”

“Temporarily,” Elias said. “But it will not lose integrity.”
The board counsel conferred with the Calder & Moss team. The procurement representative stepped aside to take a call. Rowan stood near the window, still not speaking, still leaving the center of the room to Elias.
Ten minutes later, the emergency judge joined by secure video.
The hearing was brief because the petition was narrow. Elias’s counsel presented the forged consent form, the forensic problem with the espionage logs, the video of Julian receiving a universal access card, and the documented risk of a conflict of interest.
Julian’s lawyers argued that the evidence was circumstantial.
Elias did not argue back. He had done what he came to do: put the trust beyond Julian’s immediate reach.
The judge studied the filings.
“The court grants temporary preservation,” she said at last. “All Hart Trust records are to be sealed and transferred to an independent custodian pending expedited audit. No party may exercise the disputed voting authority.”
Julian rose so quickly his chair struck the wall.
“This is outrageous.”
“It is temporary,” the judge said. “You are free to submit evidence.”
Elias let himself breathe once.
Then the court-appointed auditor, a white-haired man named David Rusk, appeared at the boardroom door with two security officers and a bank archive box. He had been dispatched under the preservation order to collect Julian’s trust files from the company’s private records room.
“We found a document misfiled behind the 2006 beneficiary ledger,” Rusk said.
Julian went still.
Rusk opened the box. Inside lay an old laboratory envelope, yellowed at the edges, stamped with a family-law firm’s seal.
“It appears to be an original parentage report,” he said. “The beneficiary notation is incomplete, but the attached trust rider references a minor named Rowan Blackwood.”
No one moved.
Rowan’s face lost all color.
Elias looked from the envelope to his uncle.
For the first time in his life, Julian Ward looked afraid.
