Chapter 2 — The Locked Floor
Emergency lights came on in a red wash.
Elias had enough time to see Rowan move toward him before the elevator doors slammed shut behind them.
“Don’t come closer,” Elias said.
“I’m not.” Rowan stopped several feet away, both hands visible. His pupils were blown wide, his jaw rigid with effort. “Your blocker is failing.”
“I noticed.”
The scent in the corridor thickened. It was not simply Omega pheromone; Elias knew his own body too well for that. This was engineered, layered with an Alpha induction compound sharp enough to make his skin prickle.
Rowan’s breathing changed.
Elias reached for the wall panel. “Hotel security. Now.”
The screen flickered once, then displayed a maintenance error.
“The floor network is down,” Rowan said.
“So are the cameras, if whoever did this knows anything.” Elias yanked his phone from his pocket. No signal. “Of course.”
Rowan’s phone showed the same dead bars.
They faced each other in the red emergency light, two men who had spent years turning every meeting into a contest, trapped in a corridor that had suddenly become a crime scene.
“You were drugged,” Rowan said.
“You smell like you were too.”
“My champagne was delivered from a tray after the mayor’s toast.”
“Mine never made it to my mouth.” Elias glanced back toward the ballroom. “Which means this was airborne.”
The building ventilation hummed overhead.
Rowan swore under his breath. “There’s a maintenance stairwell behind that door. If we can get to the mechanical room, we can shut down the intake.”
Elias wanted to argue. He wanted to order Rowan away, call him arrogant, tell him that Blackwood’s instinct to seize control was the reason no one trusted him.
Instead, he nodded.
They moved fast. Elias used his hotel keycard on the staff door; it flashed green, then opened onto a narrow service passage. Halfway down, Rowan stumbled against the wall.
“Blackwood?”
“Keep moving.”
The command came out rougher than usual. Rowan had removed his tie and loosened the top button of his shirt. A line of tension stood in his throat.
Elias’s own pulse was skittering. Every nerve felt too close to his skin. His patch had gone from burning to numb, and a fear he had not allowed himself to name crawled behind his ribs.
If Rowan recognized him now, if anyone did—
“Eyes forward,” Rowan said.
Elias looked at him sharply.
“You’re staring at the vents,” Rowan added. “Not me. Good instinct.”
The mechanical-room door was locked with a keypad. Elias entered the six-digit staff override code he had memorized from hosting events at the Mercer. The panel blinked red.
“They changed it,” he said.
“Can you bypass it?”
“I can try.”
His hands shook once as he pulled the service plate free. Rowan saw it and stepped back another pace.
“Tell me what to do,” Rowan said.
It was a small thing. For Rowan Blackwood to ask rather than take.

“Hold the light.”
Rowan angled his phone flashlight over the exposed wires. Elias worked through the system by touch, cutting the alarm loop and bridging the manual latch. The scent in the hall kept rising, an invisible tide pressing against his concentration.
The lock clicked.
Inside, the air system was running at maximum speed.
Elias crossed to the console and found a black canister attached to the intake line. Its label had been stripped. Rowan pulled a handkerchief over his mouth and photographed it.
“Evidence,” Elias said.
“I know.”
“You don’t get to improvise with evidence because you like being useful.”
Rowan’s gaze flashed. “And you don’t get to pretend you can out-stubborn a chemical attack.”
For a moment, anger cleared Elias’s head.
Then the room lurched again.
He grabbed the edge of the console. Rowan caught his elbow through the fabric of his jacket and released him immediately.
“Sorry,” Rowan said.
“Don’t apologize. Shut it down.”
Rowan cut the intake. The hum died, but the damage had already been done. The sealed room held the residue close, while the emergency locks engaged with a heavy mechanical clunk.
“No,” Elias whispered.
The door display changed to:
FIRE CONTAINMENT ACTIVE.
Rowan tested the handle once. It did not move.
“There’s an override,” he said.
“Outside.”
Elias tried to focus on the facts. Anonymous compound. Disabled communications. Changed access code. A containment lock. This was not a prank, and it was not an accident. Someone had not merely wanted to humiliate him. Someone had wanted him isolated.
His knees threatened to give out.
Rowan sank to the floor several feet away, forcing distance between them. “Listen to me. We wait. We do not make this worse.”
Elias laughed once, thin and humorless. “You always did mistake an order for a plan.”
“Then give me yours.”
Elias took out his phone and opened the emergency recorder, which did not require a signal. His thumb hovered over the screen.
“State your name and what you drank,” he said.
Rowan stared at him, then understood.
“Rowan Blackwood. At approximately ten-twenty p.m., I accepted a glass of champagne from a server near the east bar. I experienced an acute reaction within fifteen minutes. I did not knowingly take any stimulant, inducer, or illegal pheromone compound.”
Elias recorded his own statement, careful not to say too much. “Elias Hart. I experienced a medical-device failure and exposure to an unknown airborne compound in the Mercer Grand service corridor. I observed a tampered intake canister in the mechanical room.”
Rowan watched him with painful concentration. “Medical-device failure?”
“That is all you need to know.”
“Fine.” His voice went quiet. “For now.”
Minutes passed badly. The compound blurred the edges of time and thought. Elias remained near the console, repeating case numbers and server passwords under his breath like anchors. Rowan kept his eyes shut, his hands clenched into fists against his knees.

Then Rowan made a sound that did not belong to a man in control.
Elias looked up.
“Rowan.”
“Don’t.”
But the word cracked.
Elias saw the fight in him. Saw him move away rather than closer. Saw him brace his shoulder against the steel cabinet until the metal groaned.
The next stretch of time would later exist only in fragments: the alarm finally shrieking; Rowan tearing a fire blanket from the wall to wrap around Elias when the cold hit; Elias pressing the emergency release, again and again, until his thumb bled; the door opening to a wash of clean air and security lights.
There was also a sharp pain at the side of his neck.
And Rowan’s face, white with horror when he came back to himself.
Elias woke on the hotel’s infirmary cot before dawn. The building had been evacuated from the service floor up. A paramedic was speaking to someone outside the curtain.
Rowan sat in a chair beside the door, fully dressed now, staring at his own hands.
Elias touched the gauze at his neck. Under it, his skin burned in a pattern he knew from every health-class warning he had ever ignored.
“Don’t,” he said before Rowan could speak.
Rowan looked up.
“Don’t tell me what happened. Don’t ask me questions. Don’t come near me.”
“Elias—”
“You were drugged. So was I. That is the only conversation we are having tonight.”
Rowan’s face tightened. “I need to make a statement.”
“Make one about the canister.” Elias swallowed against the rawness in his throat. “Not about me.”
For the first time since Elias had known him, Rowan Blackwood looked helpless.
Then he nodded.
“All right,” he said. “I’ll preserve the evidence.”
When he left, Elias reached beneath the cot and took out the small camera card he had hidden in his cuff during the evacuation. A security officer had handed it back with his wallet, assuming it was useless.
It contained the corridor backup.
Seven minutes of footage.
The eight minutes that mattered had been erased.
