"The Map She Made Without Him" Chapter 3
Chapter 3 — Terms of a Lie
Sloane chose a French restaurant in SoHo where the water came in bottles too narrow to hold comfortably.
She was already seated when I arrived, sunlight flashing on the gold watch at her wrist.
“You look well,” she said.
“You don’t.”
Her smile stayed in place. “Direct. I can see why Graham finds you refreshing.”
“What did you want to tell me?”
Sloane folded her hands. “That Graham’s attention this past six months began because I told him to take you seriously. You should know that. You should probably be grateful.”
I took out my phone and placed it between us.
On the screen was a timeline. Graham’s late-night flights to London during our marriage. Sloane’s photos posted within hours of his arrivals. Messages from Nate arranging the lounge bet. A copy of the recording from three days earlier.
Sloane’s color changed as she scrolled.
“You hired someone to follow me?”
“No. You published most of it yourself.”
“You can’t prove any of this means what you think it means.”
“I don’t need it to mean anything more than it does.”
I leaned back. “I am not asking Graham to choose me. I’m not asking you to give him up. I am simply done allowing either of you to describe my life as a prize.”
For the first time, something fearful moved behind her eyes.
“Are you threatening me?”
“No. I’m warning you that I’m paying attention.”
Graham intensified everything after that. A car outside my school. A card in every bouquet. Transfers with notes that said Take care of yourself, as though money were a form of listening.
I accepted what was legally mine, documented every gift, and moved the funds into an account only I controlled. I did not owe him gratitude for trying to purchase the appearance of devotion.
On the afternoon of the gala, he arrived at my apartment in a black town car.
He looked at me for a long moment when I opened the door in a dark-blue silk gown.
“Maeve,” he said. “You’re stunning.”
“I know.”
His surprised laugh almost sounded real.
At the hotel, he drew me aside before the ballroom doors opened.
“Tonight,” he said, “when I ask you, will you say yes?”
“I will,” I said. “After three things.”
His face tightened. “What things?”
“First, you will swear in front of everyone that none of the kindness you’ve shown me this year was false.”
He hesitated, then nodded.
“Second, you will admit you betrayed our marriage with Sloane.”
The color drained from his face.
“Maeve—”
“Third, you will tell Sloane, in front of everyone, that you do not love her and will not pursue her again.”
He looked toward the ballroom, where the guests waited and Sloane smiled beneath a ceiling of lilies.
“And then you’ll say yes?”
“Then I’ll give you the answer you earned.”
The desire to win moved through him like a visible thing. He nodded once.
“All right.”
I touched the small backup phone taped inside my clutch, then walked through the ballroom doors in my dark-blue dress.
The room turned its attention toward me. Not all at once, but in waves: the pause in conversations, the tilt of champagne glasses, the small reassessments made by people who had expected a grateful former wife in ivory.
Iris’s message appeared on the backup screen.
Camera checked. Audio clear. I’m with you.
I slipped the phone back into my clutch and looked across the room at Graham.
He smiled as though he had already won.
I smiled back.
