"The Station That Brought Her Home" Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Parade Cart
The passage was barely wide enough for Daniel’s shoulders.
He carried Chelsea against his chest, his phone light shaking over exposed pipes and brick. The silver lilies glittered on the floor ahead of them like tiny dropped stars.
“Daniel!” Mara called from the fitting-room hall. “You cannot take your child in there.”
He did not turn. “Call 911.”
“For what?”
Chelsea heard the lie in the question. So did he.
Daniel’s jaw flexed. “For my missing wife.”
He dialed as he ran. The corridor ended at a warped metal door, already open to a wet back alley. Festival music thudded beyond the buildings.
“911, what is your emergency?”
“My wife has been abducted from The Blue Thread in Bellwether Cove,” Daniel said. “There is a concealed access corridor behind the fitting rooms. I have evidence, and they are moving her now.”
Across the alley, the harbor parade had swallowed the street. Volunteers in rain slickers pushed a long prop cart covered in black canvas. Three men in festival coveralls walked beside it.
One corner of ivory fabric hung below the canvas.
“There,” Chelsea whispered. “That cart.”
Daniel gave the dispatcher the description and moved toward the crowd. The men saw him coming and turned the cart sharply toward a service lane.
“Dad, the red door,” Chelsea said.
It was not a memory exactly. It was a word in the radio broadcast, an image from a police photograph: a rusted warehouse door with a gull painted on it.
Daniel ran.
He set Chelsea down behind a concrete planter at the mouth of the lane. “Stay here. If I tell you to call, you call.”
“Don’t go alone.”
His face broke for an instant. “I’m getting her back.”
“That’s what you said before.”
He stared at her. The past had slipped through her child’s voice.
Then Daniel squeezed her shoulder and went after the cart.
Chelsea watched him disappear between warehouses. The 911 line was still open on his phone in her hands.
“Sir?” the dispatcher said. “Can you hear me?”
Chelsea dragged the phone close. “My dad is chasing them. They have my mama.”
“Sweetheart, tell me where you are.”
Before she could answer, a man came out of the lane.
Daniel was on the ground behind him, two men pinning him to the wet pavement. The third man pushed the cart toward a red warehouse door painted with a faded gull.
Chelsea pressed the purple smartwatch screen. “I’m by the red door with the bird. Please hurry.”
The man heard her.
He crossed the distance in three strides and kicked Daniel’s phone from her hand. It skidded under a truck.
Chelsea backed away.
The man reached for her wrist.
She screamed, not because she expected someone to save her, but because the dispatcher was still listening.
“Red door!” she shouted. “Warehouse! My mom is in the cart!”

The man grabbed her smartwatch. His boot came down hard.
The screen went black.
But Chelsea had already heard the dispatcher say, “Units are on the way.”
Chapter 5: The Man in the Red Warehouse
The man lifted Chelsea by the sleeve.
Daniel saw him.
With a sound Chelsea had never heard from a human throat, her father bucked against the men holding him. One lost his grip. Daniel drove an elbow backward, tore free, and lunged.
He caught Chelsea before the man could drag her toward the warehouse.
“Touch her again,” Daniel said, holding his daughter behind him, “and you will regret every breath you take.”
The men laughed, but it was nervous laughter now. Sirens had begun somewhere beyond the festival drums.
The cart vanished through the red door.
Daniel did not chase it.
Chelsea felt the decision in the way he stopped himself. In the old future, he had gone after Elena with no witnesses, no backup, no way to prove what he found.
This time he crouched beside Chelsea, shaking as he inspected her arms. “Are you hurt?”
“Mama,” she said.
“I know.” He pulled his phone from the puddle. The screen was cracked, but the call had continued. “I know.”
Patrol cars flooded the service lane. A dark-haired woman in a county windbreaker ducked under the police tape and came straight to Daniel.
“Detective Rosa Bennett,” she said. “You reported a concealed corridor and a possible abduction?”
Daniel gave her the broken bracelet, the charm, and his photographs of the mirror mechanism. He spoke quickly, without trying to make the story sound normal.
Chelsea watched Bennett’s eyes settle on the silver lilies.
“The employee texted an accomplice,” Chelsea said. “She said they found the back hall. She said to move now.”
The detective knelt. “You saw that?”
Chelsea nodded.
“And the cart?”
“It went in there. But that’s not where they’ll take her out.”
Daniel glanced at her.
“Why?” Bennett asked.
Chelsea pointed at the warehouse roof. “The red door is for people to look at.”
Daniel looked up, thinking like an architect again. “The old loading plans had a side ramp. It runs under the eastern loft.”
Bennett turned to an officer. “Get harbor cameras, block the ramps, and keep everyone away from that building.”
From the doorway, a man shouted, “Police! You need a warrant!”
Chelsea recognized the voice from the future broadcast only as anger: the man who had told someone to put Elena on the north line.
Grant Vale.
Mara appeared behind him, pale and furious.
“She lied,” Mara called. “That child has been making things up all morning.”
Chelsea looked at Daniel. “She knows him.”
Bennett did not accuse Mara. She simply said, “Ma’am, please remain where you are.”
Mara’s hand closed around her apron pocket.
“Her phone,” Chelsea said. “Don’t let her erase it.”
Mara ran.
Two officers intercepted her before she reached the crowd.
At the same time, a harbor camera feed appeared on a patrol-car monitor. It showed the cart entering the warehouse. It did not show it leaving.
Then the thermal camera from a police drone painted two pale shapes high in the eastern wall.
One was standing.
One had collapsed.
Daniel went white.
“Elena,” he said.
Bennett lifted her radio. “Entry team, adjust to the loft. Nobody uses the front door.”
