"The Station That Brought Her Home" Chapter 2
Chapter 2: The Girl Who Knew Him
The shop was too bright.
Tiny bulbs glowed along the ceiling beams. Old jazz played from somewhere near the register. Racks of vintage dresses filled the narrow aisles, their satin sleeves brushing Chelsea’s knees as Daniel carried her toward the fitting rooms.
“Elena?” he called.
No answer.
A young woman stepped between them and the curtain.
She wore the store’s blue apron over a white blouse. Her blonde hair was pulled into a neat ponytail, and her smile arrived a second before her eyes remembered to follow it.
Chelsea knew that face.
Not from childhood.
From a police sketch folded inside one of her grandparents’ old boxes. From a newspaper clipping labeled UNIDENTIFIED EMPLOYEE SOUGHT IN CONNECTION WITH HART DISAPPEARANCE.
“Professor Hart?” the woman said. “Wow. I can’t believe it’s you.”
Daniel stopped. “Mara?”
Mara Vale beamed. “You remember me.”
“Of course. You were in Preservation Studio last spring.”
“You said my final model had potential.” She glanced at Chelsea. “And this must be your daughter.”
Chelsea twisted away from her.
Mara laughed lightly. “She’s shy.”
“She’s scared,” Chelsea said.
Daniel’s hand tightened around her back. “Chelsea.”
Mara bent slightly, as if speaking to a nervous puppy. “Your mom is fine, sweetheart. She just went to try something on.”
“She won’t come out.”
Mara’s smile held.
“Of course she will.”
Chelsea saw it then: a pale scratch across Mara’s thumb, the same thumb that tapped restlessly against her apron pocket. Beneath the fabric, a phone vibrated once.
“Can I check on her?” Daniel asked.
“I can do that.” Mara opened her arms. “Why don’t I take Chelsea to the window? The parade’s starting soon.”
Chelsea buried her face against Daniel’s shoulder.
“No.”
Mara’s arms dropped.
For half a second, something annoyed and sharp crossed her face. It vanished so fast Daniel would have missed it if Chelsea had not been watching for a monster wearing a human smile.
Daniel gave an apologetic smile. “She’s had a rough morning.”
“It’s fine,” Mara said. “Really. I’ll just peek in and tell Elena you’re here.”
She turned toward the curtain.
Chelsea’s panic broke loose.
“Don’t let her go!”
Every head in the shop turned.
Daniel lowered her to the floor. “Chelsea, what is it?”
She looked at him, forcing herself to choose words that would make sense.
“I called Mama.”
“You don’t have your phone.”
Chelsea lifted her wrist. The purple children’s smartwatch looked ridiculous against the terror filling her chest.
“It can call her.”
Daniel hesitated, then tapped the screen. Elena’s contact appeared with a cartoon sun beside it.
The line rang.
Once.
Twice.
Chelsea watched Mara’s shoulders go still beneath the blue apron.
Three times.
No answer.
“Maybe she can’t pick up while she’s changing,” Daniel said, though his voice no longer sounded certain.
“She always answers me.” Chelsea’s eyes filled. “She made my ring loud so she would know it was me.”

Daniel looked down at the screen.
The call kept ringing.
Chelsea listened past the jazz and the bell on the door. A muffled trill came once from somewhere farther behind the curtain.
Then it stopped abruptly.
Not answered.
Stopped.
Mara cleared her throat. “Mrs. Hart may have left her phone in her purse. It happens.”
“Then why did it ring?” Chelsea asked.
Mara’s eyes flicked toward the curtain.
It was a tiny movement.
Daniel saw it too.
Before anyone could speak, something white rolled beneath the velvet curtain and clicked across the old wood floor.
Chelsea lunged for it.
Daniel got there first.
It was a small silver lily charm, its petals bent at one edge.
The color left his face.
“I made this,” he said.
Mara’s smile vanished.
Daniel turned the charm over in his palm. “There were twelve on her bracelet.”
“Maybe it caught on the dress,” Mara said quickly. “I’m sure Elena is—”
“Elena!” Daniel called, louder now.
Nothing answered.
Chelsea grabbed his hand.
“Dad, I dreamed the flower fell down.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I dreamed Mama was behind the mirror,” she said. “Please don’t make me wait.”
Mara stepped in front of the curtain.
“Then you go in,” Daniel said.
Mara’s smile returned, brittle at the edges. “I was about to.”
But she did not move.
Chelsea stared at the phone-shaped outline in Mara’s apron pocket. Somewhere beyond the last door, her mother was losing minutes that Chelsea had already seen turn into years.
“Professor Hart, there are women changing back there. You can’t just go in.”
“My wife isn’t answering her phone.”
“That doesn’t give you the right to invade a fitting room.”
The shopkeeper emerged from the register area, flushed and annoyed. “Is there a problem?”
Chelsea let go of Daniel’s hand and sat hard on the floor.
Then she screamed.
“My mom is sick!”
Her voice cut through the jazz music.
“She told my dad she was sick and she isn’t talking! Please help her!”
Her cheeks burned. It was a lie, but it was the kind adults understood. A child saying her mother had vanished could be frightened imagination. A child saying someone had collapsed made people look for liability, ambulances, proof.
Chelsea hated that she knew the difference.
The lie landed exactly where Chelsea needed it to.
Two women near the shoe display exchanged frightened looks. An older customer moved closer to the curtain.
“If someone fainted, you need to check,” she said.
The shopkeeper frowned at Mara. “Go see.”
Mara did not move.
That was enough.
Daniel handed Chelsea his phone. “Call 911 if I tell you to.”
Then he pushed past Mara.
“Professor Hart!” she snapped. “You cannot—”
He pulled the velvet curtain aside.
Behind it were four fitting-room doors.
Three stood partly open. The last was closed.
Chelsea saw a shadow move beneath it.
Or thought she did.
“Mama!” she shouted.
No answer came back.
Daniel crossed the narrow hallway.
Mara caught his sleeve.
“Don’t do this,” she whispered.
He looked down at her hand.
Then at the silver lily in his fist.
“Move,” he said.
