"THE GUIDE DOG WHO WENT DOWN 78 FLOORS" Chapter 8 — The Two Medals and the Harness
Objects preserve different kinds of memory.
A medal turns an action into public recognition. A harness preserves the daily labor that made the action possible. A photograph records an appearance but not everything outside its frame. In Roselle’s story, all three can be mistaken for the story itself.
The Dickin Medal confirmed that an established animal-welfare institution regarded Roselle’s work on September 11 as exceptional. The American Kennel Club honor recognized her in the service-dog category. These were distinct awards from distinct organizations, not two names for the same medal.
The harness carried a quieter meaning. Through its rigid handle, Michael could feel changes in direction and movement. Roselle could guide around an obstacle, stop at an edge or hesitate when a command was unsafe. During the crowded descent, however, the stairwell sometimes prevented them from using the normal formation. Michael held the rail while Roselle stayed close at his heel.
That alteration did not mean the partnership failed. It showed that a trained team can adapt.
The story also reveals why “trust” should not be treated as blind faith. Michael did not follow Roselle without thought. He combined her behavior with David’s descriptions, the crowd’s movement, directions from first responders and his own knowledge. Roselle responded to his commands while navigating what was immediately in front of them. Their trust was active, informed and practiced.
In 2011, Michael published Thunder Dog with Susy Flory. The memoir brought the story to a wide audience and became a New York Times bestseller. Its title helped make Roselle an emblem of survival, but the book’s deeper argument was about the capacities people overlook—especially when they assume blindness means dependence.
Michael continued to say that fear itself is not the enemy. Fear can provide information. The danger comes when it controls the next decision. On September 11, he could not control the aircraft, the damage above him or the towers’ collapse. He could control how he communicated with Roselle and how he responded to the next flight of stairs.
This principle did not make the day fair or survivable for everyone. Location and timing were decisive. Michael’s office was below the impact zone; the stairway remained usable; the group began moving; and the tower stood long enough for them to leave. Acknowledging those conditions does not diminish their skill. It prevents survival from being turned into a moral verdict on those who died.
Roselle’s medals therefore belong within a memorial context, not a contest of courage. They recognize service while pointing back toward thousands of intertwined stories—other guide-dog teams, coworkers, strangers and responders whose actions were not captured by cameras or followed by awards.
The harness represents the private foundation beneath the public honor: work repeated until trust became usable under pressure.
Roselle’s later public life also helped guide-dog organizations explain their work. A guide dog is not a living GPS device. The dog does not read an address and choose a complete route. The handler is responsible for orientation and direction; the dog helps execute movement safely. The emergency in the North Tower did not erase those rules. It pushed them into conditions no training exercise could fully duplicate.
By the time Thunder Dog appeared, Roselle was old. She had developed health problems and was no longer the young working dog who had slept beneath a desk in 2001.
Her death in June 2011 was reported by Michael and by organizations that had followed their story. She was 13 by Michael’s dates, though some later articles have called her 14 because of differing age calculations. The important fact is not the rounded number.
It is who remained with her.
Michael and Karen were beside Roselle at the end.
The dog whose calm had carried through the sound of two collapsing towers did not die in the disaster that made her famous.
She lived for almost another decade.
Those added years allowed the public symbol to remain a working relationship, a family companion and a living presence beside Michael rather than only a name from a catastrophe.
Her final years also placed distance between the emergency and her death. Roselle was not only the dog of one September morning; she had a life before and after it.
