"THE GUIDE DOG WHO WENT DOWN 78 FLOORS" Chapter 3 — The Narrow Stairwell
The stairwell was crowded, and that changed how Roselle could work.
In open space, a guide dog normally moves ahead and slightly to one side, allowing the handler to read direction through the harness. In the North Tower’s tight emergency stairs, there was often not enough room. Michael later explained that Roselle sometimes walked at his heel while he held the railing and followed the downward movement of the crowd.
That detail cuts through a common myth. Roselle did not spend the entire descent pulling Michael in front of everyone else. Sometimes she guided him around an obstacle. Sometimes she stayed close while he used the rail. Sometimes David moved nearby and described what lay ahead.
Floor followed floor.
People carried briefcases, jackets and uncertainty. The air was filled with footsteps and voices. Those evacuating did not all know why the building had moved. Information passed unevenly. Some had seen smoke. Some had heard an impact. Some knew only that they had to keep going down.
Michael kept talking to Roselle. His voice gave her a familiar point of reference inside the tension of the stairwell. He also listened. A blind traveler is not moving through an empty darkness; Michael was using sound, the rail beneath his hand, the slope of each flight, the pressure of people around him and the movement communicated through Roselle’s harness.
About 10 floors below the office, according to Michael’s later account, a woman behind them said she could not breathe and could not continue. Michael turned back. He described a group hug on the stairs, with Roselle offering her own contact by licking the people close to her.
It was a brief interruption, not a cinematic rescue. The woman was frightened and the people around her helped her regain enough control to continue. Roselle’s calm presence mattered because calm, in that enclosed space, could spread just as fear could.
The group continued downward.
By about the 50th floor, David’s fear broke through. Michael has recalled David saying they were going to die and would not make it out. Michael responded firmly: if he and Roselle could keep descending, David could too.
David then moved ahead by roughly a floor and called information back. In Michael’s interpretation, those updates did more than help one blind man. Anyone nearby could hear a voice from below reporting that the route remained passable. A frightened colleague became a source of reassurance for strangers.
The scene demonstrates why the story cannot be reduced to one hero. Roselle was essential, but so were Michael’s decisions and David’s sight. Other evacuees made room. People steadied one another. The evacuation depended on many small acts of cooperation from people who did not know how little time remained.
The exact number of steps has often been reported as 1,463. That figure appears throughout later retellings, but the more securely documented fact is the starting point: the 78th floor. The descent took them through dozens of landings and into a human current moving toward ground level.
Michael’s testimony also makes clear that the crowd was not a single mass of panic. Fear appeared in individuals and moments, but people generally kept moving. Describing the stairwell only as chaos may sound dramatic, yet it erases the cooperation that allowed thousands below the impact zones to evacuate.
Roselle became one stabilizing presence within that movement. Her value was practical: she stayed responsive when unusual sounds, smells and close bodies could have disrupted her work. Michael’s praise was practical too. He was maintaining the connection that allowed them to keep functioning. Every landing completed was evidence that the route below still existed. Every voice returning from ahead reduced one small portion of the unknown.
Then the direction of traffic changed.
Men carrying heavy equipment began coming up toward them.
The office workers were trying to leave the danger.
The firefighters were climbing directly into it.
The next part of Roselle’s journey would be measured against those upward footsteps.
The people passing one another could not know which brief encounters would become final memories. Michael could hear weight, motion and voices. The firefighters could see the crowd below them. For a few seconds, both journeys occupied the same narrow landing before separating again.
